Health-related quality of life among siblings of kidney transplant recipients.

Studies are increasingly recognizing health-related quality of life (HRQOL) as a key pediatric outcome in both clinical and research settings and an essential health outcome measure to assess the effectiveness of medical treatment. However, it has not yet been studied among the healthy siblings of kidney transplant recipients. The aim of this study, therefore, is to examine HRQOL among this population.

Early Report on the Impact of COVID-19 Outbreak in Neurosurgical Practice Among Members of the Latin American Federation of Neurosurgical Societies.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused severe economic consequences by local governmental measures to contain the outbreak. We provide insight on the impact that health care restriction has made on neurosurgical activity in Latin Iberoamerica.

Methods: We performed an internet-based survey among presidents and members of the societies of the Latin American Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (FLANC).

[Femoral neck stress fractures and femoroacetabular impingement : A retrospective case study and literature review].

Background: Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) can lead to morphologic damage of both the acetabulum and the femoral neck. Recent reports have found an association between impingement deformities and the development of femoral neck stress fractures. The aim of this study was to report a series of patients with these findings and to update the current evidence on the topic.

Treatment of terrible triad injuries at a mean follow-up of nine years.

Background: To evaluate the sustainability of the early clinical and radiological outcomes of terrible triad injuries at long-term follow-up.

Methods: Twelve consecutive patients who underwent fixation of terrible triad injuries with minimum of seven years of follow-up. Functional and radiological outcomes at one year and final follow-up were compared.

Studies have presented conflicting findings regarding the association between both fluctuation and deprivation of ovarian hormones and cardiovascular autonomic modulation and oxidative stress and their potential impact on resting arterial pressure (AP) and cardiovascular risk. This study aimed to assess cardiovascular autonomic modulation, baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), and oxidative stress in male rats (M) and in female rats during ovulatory (FOV) and non-ovulatory phases (FNOV) of the estrous cycle and after deprivation of ovarian hormones (FO). Direct AP was recorded, and BRS was assessed by using increasing doses of phenylephrine and sodium nitroprusside.

Complementary Saphenous Nerve Block to Intra-Articular Analgesia Reduces Pain After Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: Numerous strategies exist for pain management after total knee arthroplasty (TKA), with a fast recovery and early ambulation required for full function. Currently, there is no universal standard of care to facilitate this management. We assessed pain management safety and efficacy after TKA, using intra-articular infiltration associated with peripheral saphenous nerve block (SNB) vs intra-articular infiltration alone.

Ulnohumeral Bridge Plating for Massive Distal Humerus Bone Loss: A Case Report.

Case: Massive bone loss around the elbow is a challenging clinical condition. Short periarticular osseous segments present few reconstructive options in the setting of distal humerus bone loss. We report the case of a 20-year-old man who sustained an open, intra-articular distal humerus fracture with a massive metaphyseal defect of 15 cm after a motorcycle accident.

Is there a Role for Antibiotic Prophylaxis Prior to Dental Procedures in Patients with Total Joint Arthroplasty? A Systematic Review of the Literature.

: The indication of prophylactic antibiotics prior to dental procedures for non-infected causes in order to reduce the risk of haematogenous periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) remains as controversial. We performed a systematic review of the literature assessing the relationship between PJI and invasive dental procedures and whether there is evidence to support the use of antibiotic prophylaxis. : This review was conducted in accordance with the 2009 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) statement.

How to create patient-specific loops for correcting mitral valve prolapse through a minimally invasive approach.

A 72-year-old woman with a 6-month history of severe mitral valve regurgitation presented at our institution with dyspnea (NYHA II-III) and left ventricular impairment (LVEF 50%). Echocardiography showed P2-P3 prolapse with chordal rupture. A posterior mitral valve repair was performed using the loop technique through a minimally invasive approach.

Objectives: Compare the clinical and radiological outcome of CFP stem with the MiniHip design in a prospective series, with special interest in intraoperative periprosthetic fracture (IPPF).

Methods: We prospectively followed 101 cases treated with the MiniHip stem (Group 1) and 89 with the CFP stem (Group 2) operated between 2010 and 2014. No significant demographic differences were observed between both groups.

Unusual hematogenous infection in total knee replacement treated with one-stage revision surgery.

Septic arthritis due to (LM) is extremely rare and most infections due to this organism are seen in immunocompromised patients. We describe a patient without immunological compromise, with a late total knee arthroplasty infection caused by LM treated with one-stage revision surgery. She had an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (79 mm/h) and C-reactive protein (13 mg/dL).

Cramps during Hemodialysis: Are They Always Innocent?

Cramps are very common in hemodialysis (HD) patients. A high ultrafiltration rate and volume contraction have been implicated in the pathogenesis, but the underlying mechanism is not yet fully elucidated. We present a male HD patient with cramps during his session, attributed to acute limb ischemia due to thrombosis of a common femoral artery aneurysm (CFAA).

Potential predictive value of cofilin-1 for metastasis occurrence in a small cohort of Argentinian patients with mid-low Breslow thickness melanoma.

Nowadays, histopathological criteria for melanocytic lesions are the mainstay prognostic factors for melanoma. However, there are cases in which these parameters fall short to predict melanoma spread. We recently demonstrated a correlation of cofilin-1 levels, a key protein for tumor invasion, with different histopathological parameters associated with melanoma malignancy as well as a negative correlation with survival.

Cement leakage into the hip joint during TFN-A cement augmentation in a revision surgery of an extra-capsular hip fracture.

Introduction: The intra-articular migration of the spiral lamina or screw, after close reduction and internal fixation (CRIF) with an intramedullary cervicodiaphyseal nail (cut-through), is one of the most frequent postoperative complications. We present a patient with a cut-through and cement leakage into the hip joint after TFN-A cement augmentation and spiral lamina replacement.

Methods: A 83-year-old man, suffered a cut-through after CRIF of his left extracapsular hip fracture during the third postoperative month.

Unaddressed arterial injuries in revision total hip arthroplasty: mortality outcomes of a low-prevalence complication.

Purpose: Peri-operative major arterial haemorrhage after revision total hip arthroplasty (RTHA) is an odd but limb- and life-threatening complication. In this retrospective analysis, we sought to determine the prevalence of such injuries requiring selective catheter embolization or bypass after RTHA and to evaluate the associated mortality rate.

Methods: Between 1995 and 2016, 2524 RTHAs were performed at a high-volume centre (1031 one-stage revisions, 1370 two-stage revisions and 123 resection arthroplasties).

Sleep quality and related factors in postmenopausal women.

Unlabelled: Sleep disorders, resulting from hormonal changes and vasomotor symptoms, are common in both peri- and postmenopausal women. Poor sleep quality is associated with increased metabolic and cardiovascular risk, depression and a global impairment in health status.

Objectives: Our study aimed to assess sleep quality in a sample of postmenopausal women and to identify the factors associated with poor sleep quality.

Pseudomyogenic Hemangioendothelioma (Epithelioid Sarcoma-Like Hemangioendothelioma).

Pseudomyogenic hemangioendothelioma (PMH) is a rare vascular tumor that presents more frequently in young adults and has a male predominance. It is usually located in the superficial or deep soft tissues of the extremities, but concurrent bone involvement can be present. In approximately two-thirds of patients this disease is multifocal, often involving multiple tissue planes.

Safety margin for the preservation of the nasoseptal artery during trans-nasal endoscopic approach.

Background: The introduction of the nasoseptal flap for the reconstruction of extended endoscopic approaches decreased the incidence of postoperative fistula. In order to preserve the septal vascular pedicles, many have started to prepare the flap systematically, prior to the opening of the sphenoid rostrum. The aim of this study is to obtain an average measure of the location of the posterior septal artery using the upper edge of the choana as a landmark.

Antegrade Posterior Interosseous Flap for Nonhealing Wounds of the Elbow: Anatomical and Clinical Study.

Background: The posterior interosseous artery (PIA) flap has been widely reported to cover defects at the dorsal aspect of the hand. However, the use of this flap to cover elbow defects has been rarely reported. The purpose of this study was to analyze the anatomical feasibility of the PIA flap to cover elbow soft-tissue defects and, additionally, to review the clinical outcomes of patients treated with this flap.

Failure rates and functional results for intercalary femur reconstructions after tumour resection.

Purpose: To compare the results for patients treated with intercalary endoprosthetic replacement (EPR) or intercalary allograft reconstruction for diaphyseal tumours of the femur in terms of: (1) reconstruction failure rates; (2) cause of failure; (3) risk of amputation of the limb; and (4) functional result.

Methods: Patients with bone sarcomas of the femoral diaphysis, treated with en bloc resection and reconstructed with an intercalary EPR or allograft, were reviewed. A total of 107 patients were included in the study (36 EPR and 71 intercalary allograft reconstruction).

Data Sources: PubMed, CINAHL, and Embase were searched from 1946 to August 2018 for English-language articles.

DEPDC5 mutation and familial focal epilepsy with variable foci: genotype and phenotype of a family.

Familial focal epilepsy with variable foci is a relatively rare autosomal disease with an unclear incidence, which is characterized by focal seizures arising from different cortical regions in different family members. We describe three members of a two-generation Argentine family with familial focal epilepsy with variable foci syndrome and a DEPDC5 gene mutation. The mean onset age was nine years old.
