Successful Percutaneous Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement for Severe Aortic Regurgitation in a High-risk Patient with Cardiorenal Syndrome.

The absence of a Food and Drug Administration-approved percutaneous valve technology for the treatment of severe aortic regurgitation (AR) presents a challenge for high-risk patients. In this report, we describe the successful treatment of an 84-year-old male patient suffering from severe symptomatic AR and concomitant cardiorenal syndrome with renal failure using a 34 mm Evolut R (Medtronic) self-expanding transcatheter aortic valve replacement. This intervention resulted in the resolution of AR, cardiorenal syndrome, and congestive heart failure symptoms.

Effects of short- and long-term use of propolis extracts on liver and kidney in rats.

Propolis is widely used as a supplementary food product for its health benefits. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of commercial propolis extracts on the liver and kidney. Propolis extracts (250 mg/kgbw/day) were administered orally to adult male rats in solvents of ethanol, propylene glycol, water, and olive oil.

We developed a microchip device using surface acoustic waves (SAW) and sharp-edge glass microparticles to rapidly lyse low-level cell samples. This microchip features a 13-finger pair interdigital transducer (IDT) with a 30-degree focused angle, creating high-intensity acoustic beams converging 6 mm away at a 16 MHz frequency. We describe a 58-year-old lady with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and central nervous system involvement having an increased metabolism in the distal esophagus with 18F-FDG PET/CT, which was consistent with esophageal candidiasis, most probably due to prolonged use of dexamethasone. Esophageal candidiasis can be misdiagnosed as malignancy with a high SUVmax and may lead to difficulties while managing these patients.
