Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the quality of laparoscopic radical hysterectomy (LRH) videos on YouTube, focusing on how well they showcased surgical techniques and anatomical landmarks.
  • Out of 250 videos analyzed, only 40 met the criteria for detailed examination, with 60% demonstrating a complete list of surgical steps, but only 32.5% scored well on the LAP-VEGaS assessment tool.
  • Videos with higher LAP-VEGaS scores and those featuring a teaching voice were more popular, attracting significantly more daily views compared to lower-scoring videos or those with music.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of ultrasonographic and Doppler findings in distinguishing between simple and complicated appendicitis in pediatric patients.
  • A total of 50 patients with diagnosed appendicitis were examined, with the majority having simple appendicitis (82%), and significant differences in CRP levels and periappendiceal fatty tissue thickness were found between the two groups.
  • The conclusion indicated that while Doppler ultrasonography was not effective in distinguishing between the two types of appendicitis, higher CRP levels and increased mesenteric tissue thickness were useful indicators for diagnosing complicated appendicitis.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how Human assumed central sensitization (HACS) affects the outcomes of transforaminal epidural steroid injections (TFESI) for patients with musculoskeletal disorders.
  • - Out of 65 patients, 31 had HACS, and while all patients showed improvement in pain and disability scores over time, those without HACS had significantly better outcomes.
  • - The findings suggest that HACS negatively impacts pain levels, disability, and mental health in patients receiving TFESI, indicating that treating HACS may be important for better recovery.

Medeni Med J

June 2024

Istanbul Goztepe Prof. Dr. Suleyman Yalcin City Hospital, Clinic of Internal Medicine, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases, Istanbul, Türkiye.

Article Synopsis
  • - Dipeptidyl-peptidase 4 inhibitors (DPP4i) are widely used and generally considered safe for treating diabetes, but new evidence suggests they might cause some adverse effects.
  • - Recent cases have shown a link between DPP4i medications and the skin condition bullous pemphigoid (BP), especially in elderly patients; four cases were reported involving the drugs linagliptin and vildagliptin.
  • - All patients experienced remission from BP after stopping the DPP4i and using topical corticosteroids, highlighting the need for doctors to monitor potential BP risks when prescribing these drugs to older patients.

Article Synopsis
  • - Fluorescence-guided surgery (FGS) is a promising technique to determine surgical margins during operations for bone and soft tissue sarcomas, but its use in orthopaedic oncology is still limited.
  • - A review of existing studies showed mixed results for FGS’s effectiveness, with sensitivity ranging from 22.2% to 100% and specificity from 9.38% to 100%, highlighting the varied performance metrics due to differences in study quality.
  • - Overall, while FGS is a viable option for assessing tumor margins, the inconsistency in findings and performance metrics suggests a need for more rigorous studies to improve its reliability in clinical practice.

MRI reliability in pediatric abdominal lymph node metastases?

Acta Radiol

October 2023

Department of Radiology, Faculty of Medicine, Goztepe Prof. Dr. Suleyman Yalcin City Hospital, Istanbul Medeniyet University, Istanbul, Turkey.

Background: Although positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) is an effective imaging method used in the detection of lymph node metastases, repeated imaging increases X-ray exposure, especially in pediatric patients. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may detect abdominal lymph nodes and provide subtle anatomic detail, and functional information without radiation.

Purpose: To evaluate the reliability of MRI in detecting lymph node metastases in pediatric abdominal malignancies and to determine whether X-ray dose can be reduced by comparing its effectiveness with PET-CT.

July 2023

Department of Genetics, Aziz Sancar Institute of Experimental Medicine, Istanbul University, Istanbul, Turkey.

Extracellular Genomic Materials (EGMs) are the nucleic acids secreted or released from all types of cells by endogenous or exogenous stimuli through varying mechanisms into the extracellular region and inevitably to all biological fluids. EGMs could be found as free, protein-bound, and/ or with vesicles. EGMs can potentially have immunophenotypic and/or genotypic characteristics of a cell of origin, travel to distant organs, and interact with the new microenvironment.
