Department of Emergency Medicine, İstanbul Bakırköy Dr Sadi Konuk Training and Research Hospital, Zuhuratbaba Mah, Dr. Tevfik Sağlam Cd No:11, 34147, Bakırköy/Istanbul, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • Early discharge of low-risk chest pain patients remains a topic of debate in emergency care due to the uncertainty surrounding risk assessments and troponin testing.
  • A study was conducted involving 911 patients to evaluate the effectiveness of the EDACS-ADP and COMPASS-MI protocols in predicting major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) within 30 days.
  • Results indicated that patients deemed not low-risk using these assessments had significantly higher chances of experiencing MACE, suggesting these tools could be valuable for safe patient management in the emergency department.

Supine positioned PNL can be performed safely in the high-risk group patients with comorbidities. Herein, we present a patient who had a past surgical history of right pneumonectomy and underwent a supine PNL procedure under regional anesthesia for a staghorn renal stone in the right kidney.

Background: While many factors involved in the etiology of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), one of which is the hormone relaxin. Relaxin concentrations in patients with DDH may lead to pathodynamic changes during hip development by altering the physiological nature of the ligament, as well as by long-term exposure to relaxin during pregnancy. Our objective in this study was to determine the number of relaxin receptors in the ligamentum teres and their role in causing DDH.

Aim: In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of Ultrasonic Coagulation (UC), Bipolar Energy Sealing System (BESS), Intra Operative Nerve Monitoring (IONM) and surgical experience on the complications of thyroid surgery.

Method: The data of 1627 patients who underwent thyroid surgery for various indications in our department between 2009 and 2018 were analyzed retrospectively and the effects of different technological devices on complications were investigated.

Results: Transient recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) palsy was higher between 2009 and 2013, when IONM was not in routine use (p=0.

Article Synopsis
  • Pneumothorax events are prevalent among COVID-19 patients in the ICU, especially those on mechanical ventilation, highlighting a critical area of concern for healthcare providers.
  • A study examined 124 patients with diagnosed pneumothorax and found that higher levels of inflammatory markers, particularly IL-6 and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), were linked to increased mortality rates.
  • Results indicated that those who did not survive had significantly elevated IL-6 levels and NLR, suggesting an urgent need for monitoring these indicators to improve patient outcomes.

First identified in China in December 2019, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has rapidly evolved into a global pandemic. The presence of haematological malignancies are expected to increase the risk of adverse outcomes from this viral infection due to the immunosuppression brought about by the underlying cancer and the effects of therapy. We present a 55-year-old woman diagnosed with relapsed/refractory Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) who had been heavily pretreated with multiagent chemotherapy, autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (autoHCT), allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (alloHCT) and was complicated with EBV associated posttransplant lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD) and chronic graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD).

Background: We aimed to evaluate the effects of two different burn dressings, hydrofiber with a silver (HFAg) and polylactic membrane (PLM), on altering the levels of important biomarkers Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), Transforming growth factor-β3 (TGF-β3) in blood and burnt tissue in children with second-degree burns.

Methods: Children between the ages of one to 16 years, with 25-50% second-degree partial-thickness burns of the total body surface area were included in this study. Patients in the PLM group were dressed with PLM in a typical way according to the manual.

Objectives: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease requiring lifelong medical care, and its prevalence is increasing worldwide. Early diagnosis of prediabetes and diabetes is significant in view of the mortality, morbidity and cost associated with them. Because of the difficulties in application and reproducibility of oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), which is considered to be the gold standard in the diagnosis of DM, more feasible diagnostic tests are needed.
