Definition of Balance and Cognition Related to Disability Levels in Vestibular Migraine Patients.

Objective: To compare the balance and cognition of vestibular migraine (VM) patients with migraineurs without vertigo history and healthy subjects, and to examine the effects of disability level on these functions.

Material-method: The study consisted of 32 VM patients, 32 migraineurs and 31 healthy subjects with similar sex and age. Balance functions were assessed with Balance Evaluation Systems Test (BEST), dizziness and headache severity with Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), disability related to dizziness with Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI), cognition with Stroop test.

A new surgical approach for pilonidal sinus disease: "de-epithelialization technique''.

Objective: In the treatment of pilonidal sinus disease different approaches are used such as conservative treatment and fasciocutaneous rotation flap. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of "de-epithelialization technique" as a new approach in pilonidal sinus disease treatment.

Material And Methods: Forty pilonidal sinus disease patients treated with de-epithelialization method were evaluated retrospectively.

Antimicrobial Effect of Toothpastes Containing Fluoride, Xylitol, or Xylitol-Probiotic on Salivary and in Children.

Aim: This in vivo study was designed to compare the antimicrobial effect of toothpastes containing fluoride, xylitol, or xylitol-probiotic on Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus in 13-15-year-old children.

Materials And Methods: The study consisted of 60 pediatric patients who were randomly divided into three groups of 20 each. Group 1 recieved fluoride toothpaste (Colgate Max Fresh), group 2 used xylitol toothpaste (Xyliwhite), and group 3 used xylitol-probiotic toothpaste (PerioBiotic).

Nationwide Experience With Off-Label Use of Interleukin-1 Targeting Treatment in Familial Mediterranean Fever Patients.

Objective: Approximately 30-45% of patients with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) have been reported to have attacks despite colchicine treatment. Currently, data on the treatment of colchicine-unresponsive or colchicine-intolerant FMF patients are limited; the most promising alternatives seem to be anti-interleukin-1 (anti-IL-1) agents. Here we report our experience with the off-label use of anti-IL-1 agents in a large group of FMF patients.

Secondary prevention of coronary heart disease in elderly population of Turkey: A subgroup analysis of ELDERTURK study.

Background: Secondary prevention plays an important role after acute coronary event due to high risk of adverse events in elderly. In present study we aimed to evaluate the lifestyle, management of risk factors and medical treatment for secondary protection in elderly patients with known coronary heart disease (CHD).

Methods: ELDERTURK is a non-interventional, multi-centered, observational study, which included total of 5694 elderly patients ( > 65 years) from 50 centers in Turkey.

Objectives: This study aims to evaluate facet tropism in younger patients with lumbar spondylolysis and to investigate the role of facet tropism in the development of spondylolysis.

Patients And Methods: Between February 2013 and December 2015, a total of 102 male patients with bilateral L5 pars defect including 53 with spondylolysis and 49 control subjects were included in this case-control study. The facet joint angles were measured bilaterally and axially at the level of L3-4, L4-5, L5-S1 using computed tomography (CT).

Clinical, Radiological and Electrophysiological Comparison of Immunomodulatory Therapies in Multiple Sclerosis.

Introduction: Although it has been shown that immunomodulatory therapies (IMTs) in multiple sclerosis (MS) can modify the course of the disease by reducing the relapse rate and delaying the progression of disability, no study comparing IMTs head-to-head in terms of clinical, radiological, and electrophysiological changes is available. We aimed to investigate the effects of interferon-beta (IFN-B) 1b, IFN-B-1a subcutaneous (sc), IFN-B-1a intramuscular (im), and glatiramer acetate (GA) therapies on clinical, electrophysiological, and radiological findings.

Methods: We studied a cohort of 85 MS patients who were followed up for at least 2 years and had complete charting, including pre-treatment and post-treatment clinical, radiological, and electrophysiological findings.

Ototoxicity of boric acid powder in a rat animal model.

Introduction: Boric acid, which has antiseptic and acidic properties, is used to treat external and middle ear infections. However, we have not found any literature about the effect of boric acid powder on middle ear mucosa and inner ear.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate possible ototoxic effects of boric acid powder on cochlear outer hair cell function and histological changes in middle ear mucosa in a rat animal model.

Transpulmonary Hypothermia with Cooled Oxygen Inhalation Shows Promising Results as a Novel Hypothermia Technique.

Background: Therapeutic hypothermia was showed to improve neurologic outcome but current therapeutic hypothermia techniques have limitations. Novel techniques such as transpulmonary hypothermia with cooled oxygen inhalation may be beneficial.

Aims: To evaluate the performance of transthoracic hypothermia with cooled medical oxygen inhalation as a therapeutic hypothermia method.

Olfactory and gustatory functions in patients with non-complicated type 1 diabetes mellitus.

The aim of this study was to evaluate any possible relationship between diabetic state and olfactory and gustatory functions in patients with non-complicated diabetes mellitus type 1 (T1D), and also to present evidence of the association between olfactory and gustatory scores and HbA1c values and disease durations. The study included 39 patients with non-complicated T1D and 31 healthy controls. Clinical characteristics such as age, gender, duration of disease, education levels and biochemical analyses (fasting blood glucose, urea, creatinine, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C), triglyceride, HbA1c, C-peptide, postprandial blood glucose) were measured.

Giant J (Osborn) Wave due to Bonsai Abuse: Comments on Clinical Practice.

Background: Osborn wave, typically associated with hypothermia, is currently referred to as one of the J wave syndromes due to its clinical potential to develop lethal cardiac arrhythmia; it may rarely be observed in a non-hypothermic setting such as cannabis abuse.

Case Report: In this paper, we presented two young cases who presented to the emergency services with unconsciousness, drowsiness, and hypoxia, and also J wave on electrocardiography (ECG) due to Bonsai abuse.

Conclusion: Osborn wave may be a significant criterion to initiate close monitoring in a coronary care unit, with supportive treatment and mechanical ventilation as necessary in those patients who abuse Bonsai.

Prediction of intraoperative nausea and vomiting in caesarean delivery under regional anaesthesia.

Objectives This study aimed to predict patients who have caesarean operations under regional anaesthesia and are at risk for intraoperative nausea and vomiting (IONV), for ultimately prompting anaesthetists and surgeons to take preventive measures. Methods This was a retrospective study on 209 patients who had caesarean section under spinal-epidural combined regional anaesthesia. The relevant medical history, such as severe nausea and vomiting in the first trimester, smoking, a history of motion sickness, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS), were obtained from the patients' records and interviews.

Correlation between body mass index and quadrupled hamstring tendon autograft size in ACL reconstruction.

Purpose: the aim of this study was to assess the relationship of patient weight, height and body mass index (BMI) with the size of the quadrupled hamstring tendon used in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.

Methods: from patient records, we retrospectively assessed the weight, height, BMI and graft sizes of 126 patients who underwent ACL reconstruction using a quadrupled hamstring tendon autograft between January 2010 and January 2013 at our institution. The data obtained from perioperative measurements were studied using correlation analysis.

Clinical usefulness and performance of acoustic radiation force impulse in patients with chronic hepatitis B.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) compared with liver biopsy in quantifying fibrosis levels in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB).

Patients And Methods: The study was approved by the institutional review board at our hospital. One hundred CHB patients and 30 healthy controls (130 individuals) were included in the study.

Context: Musculoskeletal injuries may be painful, troublesome, life limiting and also one of the global health problems. There has been considerable amount of interest during the past two decades to stem cells and tissue engineering techniques in orthopedic surgery, especially to manage special and compulsive injuries within the musculoskeletal system.
