Circ Cardiovasc Qual Outcomes

January 2025

Penn Cardiovascular Outcomes, Quality, and Evaluative Research Center, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. (L.Y., K.S., E.G., S.M.D., G.J.W., A.S.N., L.A.E., H.M.J., T.J.K., P.W.G., J.G., A.C.F.).

Background: Black patients, those with low socioeconomic status (SES), and those living in rural areas have elevated rates of major lower extremity amputation, which may be related to a lack of subspecialty chronic limb-threatening ischemia care. We evaluated the association between race, rurality, SES, and preamputation vascular care.

Methods: Among patients aged 66 to 86 years with fee-for-service Medicare who underwent major lower extremity amputation for chronic limb-threatening ischemia from July 2010 to December 2019, we compared the proportion who received vascular care in the 12 months before amputation by race (Black versus White), rurality, and SES (dual eligibility for Medicaid versus no dual eligibility) using multivariable logistic regression adjusting for clinical and demographic covariates.

Development and validation of a prognostic nomogram model for severe osteomyelitis patients.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Pediatric Surgery, Women and Children's Hospital Affiliated to Ningbo University, No. 339 Liuting Street, Ningbo, 315012, Zhejiang Province, China.

After severe infection in osteomyelitis patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), there's a higher risk of mortality. However, limited research exists on predicting prognosis. Develop a predictive model for 1-year mortality risk in ICU-admitted osteomyelitis patients to inform clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Purpose: Diffusing alpha-emitters Radiation Therapy ("Alpha DaRT") is a new cancer treatment modality that employs radium-224-loaded metal sources implanted in solid tumors to disperse alpha-emitting atoms within a therapeutic "kill-zone" of a few millimeters around each source. Preclinical studies have demonstrated tumor growth delay in various cancer types, including glioblastoma multiforme, and the method is used in clinical trials for patients with skin and head and neck cancer. This study aims to assess the safety and feasibility of implementing Alpha DaRT for brain tumor treatment in a large animal model.

miRNA-target complementarity in cnidarians resembles its counterpart in plants.

EMBO Rep

January 2025

Department of Ecology, Evolution and Behavior, Alexander Silberman Institute of Life Sciences, Faculty of Science, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem, 9190401, Israel.

microRNAs (miRNAs) are important post-transcriptional regulators that activate silencing mechanisms by annealing to mRNA transcripts. While plant miRNAs match their targets with nearly-full complementarity leading to mRNA cleavage, miRNAs in most animals require only a short sequence called 'seed' to inhibit target translation. Recent findings showed that miRNAs in cnidarians, early-branching metazoans, act similarly to plant miRNAs, by exhibiting full complementarity and target cleavage; however, it remained unknown if seed-based regulation was possible in cnidarians.

  • The study examined the relationship between serum bicarbonate levels and 28-day mortality in critically ill patients with infective endocarditis using data from the MIMIC-IV database.
  • Patients with higher serum bicarbonate levels upon ICU admission showed significantly lower mortality rates, suggesting that bicarbonate levels can be a potential prognostic marker.
  • The findings indicate that monitoring bicarbonate levels could help assess risk and guide the clinical management of patients with infective endocarditis.

Previous studies indicate differences in experiences of loneliness during the COVID-19 pandemic but are constricted by limited timeframes and absence of key risk factors. This study explores temporal and inter-individual variations of loneliness in Canadians over the pandemic's first year (April 2020-2021), by identifying loneliness trajectories. It then seeks to provide information about groups overrepresented in high and persistent loneliness trajectories by examining their associations with risk factors: social isolation indicators (living alone, adherence to health measures limiting in-person contacts, and online contacts), young adultood, and the interactions between these factors.

Propagation of membrane tension mediates mechanical signal transduction along surfaces of live cells and sets the time scale of mechanical equilibration of cell membranes. Recent studies in several cell types and under different conditions revealed a strikingly wide variation range of the tension propagation speeds including extremely low ones. The latter suggests a possibility of long-living inhomogeneities of membrane tension crucially affecting mechano-sensitive membrane processes.

Article Synopsis
  • The primary motor cortex (M1) is essential for learning motor skills, and dopaminergic signaling from the ventral-tegmental area (VTA) plays a significant role in this process.
  • Using techniques like calcium imaging and chemogenetic inhibition, researchers found that learning a dexterity task leads to a reorganization of M1 layer 2-3, changing how neurons connect and communicate while maintaining overall activity levels.
  • Blocking VTA signals during learning halted these neural changes, highlighting the importance of dopaminergic input in developing outcome signaling and refined connectivity in M1, which is crucial for acquiring new motor skills.
