Protective Effects of Polysaccharide Composite Microcapsules on the Survival of during Simulated Gastrointestinal Digestion and Heat Treatment.

Mar Drugs

June 2024

Engineering Technology Innovation Center for the Development and Utilization of Marine Living Resources, Third Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources, Xiamen 361005, China.

To improve probiotics' survivability during gastrointestinal digestion and heat treatment, was microencapsulated by spray-drying using polysaccharide/sodium caseinate/gelatin (LJP/SC/GE) composites. Thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry results revealed that the denaturation of LJP/SC/GE microcapsules requires higher thermal energy than that of SC/GE microcapsules, and the addition of LJP may improve thermal stability. Zeta potential measurements indicated that, at low pH of the gastric fluid, the negatively charged LJP attracted the positively charged SC/GE, helping to maintain an intact microstructure without disintegration.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the biofloc technology (BFT) system and the replacement of fish meal with Spirulina biomass on productive performance, intestinal histomorphometry, plasma biochemistry, and oxidative stress of Nile tilapia juveniles (Oreochromis niloticus) fed suboptimal levels of protein. Two factors were evaluated: production systems (clear water × BFT) and replacement of fish meal with Spirulina (0, 33, 66 e 100%). The design was in a 2 × 4 randomized factorial scheme with four replications, and the fish were evaluated for 48 days.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a kind of inflammatory bowel condition characterized by inflammation within the mucous membrane, rectal bleeding, diarrhea, and pain experienced in the abdominal region. Existing medications for UC have limited treatment efficacy and primarily focus on symptom relief. Limonium bicolor (LB), an aquatic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), exerts multi-targeted therapeutic effects with few side effects and is used to treat anemia and hemostasis.

Microencapsulation of with Improved Survivability Using Pufferfish Skin Gelatin-Based Wall Materials.

Mar Drugs

March 2024

Engineering Technology Innovation Center for the Development and Utilization of Marine Living Resources, Third Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources, Xiamen 361005, China.

To improve the survivability of probiotics, was microencapsulated using pufferfish skin gelatin (PSG)-based wall materials by spray-drying. This work investigated the protective effect of three different pH-dependent proteins (sodium caseinate (SC), soy protein isolate (SPI), and whey protein isolate (WPI)) combined with PSG on . The experimental results of spray-drying with an inlet temperature of 120 °C and an outlet temperature of 80 °C, storage at 4 °C for 6 months, simulated digestion, and turbidity indicated that PSG/SC had better stability and encapsulation effects and was more suitable to encapsulate than PSG/SPI and PSG/WPI.

School of Marine Sciences, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, Nanjing, 210044, China; Third Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources, Xiamen, 361005, China; Observation and Research Station of Island and Coastal Ecosystem in the Western Taiwan Straits, MNR, Xiamen, 361005, China. Electronic address:

The red Noctiluca scintillans (RNS) blooms often break out near Pingtan Island, in the northern Taiwan Strait from April to June. It is essential to gain insights into their formation mechanism to predict and provide early warnings for these blooms. Previous studies and observations showed that RNS blooms are the most likely to occur when winds are weak and shifting in direction.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers studied how cobia fish's liver responds after eating by analyzing their gene expression and fatty acid profiles over a 24-hour period.
  • They fed the fish, fasted them, and then collected liver samples at various intervals to see how the diet affected specific fatty acids and gene activities.
  • The findings revealed that the best time to assess the liver's response was between 8 to 12 hours after feeding, as gene expression changes were minimal at 24 hours, indicating they were less impacted by food intake.

Intertidal sediments are a significant reservoir of trace metals originating from human activities and natural weathering. However, the absence of geochemical background levels and the heterogeneity of sediment components are challenging to quantify the extent of trace metal contamination. For distinguishing the contribution of natural and anthropogenic inputs, dynamic background functions were established by linear regressions of trace metals (i.
