The increasing prevalence of unintended pregnancies, a persistent issue affecting public health and hindering progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), highlights the critical need for innovative contraceptive approaches. While current methods, including hormonal contraceptives such as levonorgestrel (LNG), offer potential solutions, challenges like limited access and inconsistent use persist. This study introduces a new approach with the development of a three-layer microneedle (TIMN) containing LNG designed to provide extended contraceptive efficacy.

Article Synopsis
  • Wildfires are prevalent natural disasters that greatly affect quality of life, driven by climate change, local policies, and human actions.
  • The study analyzes over 2.2 million fire spots in Brazil from January 2011 to December 2022, using satellite data to identify high-temperature areas linked to wildfires.
  • A spatio-temporal mixed model was used to examine how meteorological (humidity, air temperature) and human factors (land-use changes) influence the occurrence of these fire spots across six Brazilian biomes.

Obesity has become a global issue that affects the emergence of various chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, dysplasia, heart disorders, and cancer. In this study, an integration method was developed between the metabolite profile of the active compound of Murraya paniculata and the exploration of the targeting mechanism of adipose tissue using network pharmacology, molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulation, and in vitro tests. Network pharmacology results obtained with the skyline query technique using a block-nested loop (BNL) showed that histone acetyltransferase p300 (EP300), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARG), and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PPARGC1A) are potential targets for treating obesity.

Among all amino acids, the three aromatic systems including phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan are known to manifest UV light absorption at the higher wavelengths. Their fluorescent properties are important for protein detection and determination of the spatial structure. Based on quantum chemical calculations, the absorption spectra in the 0-12 eV UV range of these aromatic amino acids were interpreted, and the photochemistry of the lowest-lying excited states was studied.

Modulating Cation and Water Transports for Enhanced CO Electrolysis via Ionomer Coating.

ChemSusChem

February 2024

Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, University of Calgary, 2500 University Drive, NW, Calgary, Alberta, T2N 1N4, Canada.

Electrification of the chemical industry has been considered an enabler for energy transition on a massive scale. In this context, carbon monoxide electroreduction (COR) to produce multi-carbon (C ) products is considered one of the forefront emerging technologies. The key challenge in COR comes from the excessive cation crossover to the cathode via electromigration and water diffusion, which limits CO availability and impedes product selectivity.

Recycling water from drinking water treatment sludge (DWTS) as raw water raises several problems in the drinking water supply. In this study, the impact of storage temperatures and oxygen conditions for DWTS on the characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) released from sludge was evaluated in terms of adsorbability by activated carbon. Results showed that the adsorbability of the released DOM varied greatly with storage temperatures and oxygen conditions.

A density functional study was performed to investigate the mechanism of the photocatalytic reactivity of styrene polymerization using dinuclear Ru-Pd and Ir-Pd catalytic complexes. In previous experiments with these catalysts, the reactivity increased, and more polymer products were yielded compared to dimers under visible light irradiation. The best catalytic reactivity was obtained using an Ir-Pd complex containing naphthyl substituents at the phenyl ligands coordinated to Ir (-).

One-pot alkanolamines-assisted synthesis of magnetic mesoporous silica for synthetic dye adsorption.

Anal Sci

November 2022

Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Science, Faculty of Engineering, Gifu University, 1-1 Yanagido, Gifu, 501-1193, Japan.

Magnetic mesoporous silica (MMS) was synthesized in a one-pot system using various alkanolamines (triethanolamine, diethanolamine, tris (hydroxymethyl)aminomethane) as a basic catalyst. The characterization of the composites was conducted using scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffractometer, surface area analyzer, and X-ray photoelectros spectroscopy. The MMS synthesized with tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (MMS) showed the highest specific surface area, pore volume, and average pore diameter.

Lemongrass essential oil is used directly to kill lichens and has many disadvantages such as being less effective, volatile, and inefficient. Lichens are a type of microbe that grows in rocks and cause biodeteriorations of rock material because they are highly erosive. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the direct synthesis of lemongrass essential oil-silver nanoparticles (EO-AgNPs) as biopesticides and application for lichens inhibition on stones.

The separation of CO/CH using porous carbon can be increased by the presence of a functional group of nitrogen on the carbon surface. This study explores the potential of porous carbon derived from the palm kernel shell (C-PKS) impregnated with a deep eutectic solvent (DES), which is one of the chemicals containing a nitrogen element. The DES was composed of a quaternary ammonium salt of choline chloride (ChCl) and a hydrogen bond donor of alcohol.

OMICS approaches in cardiovascular diseases: a mini review.

Genomics Inform

June 2021

Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, Islamic University of Indonesia, Yogyakarta 55584, Indonesia.

Ranked in the topmost position among the deadliest diseases in the world, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a global burden with alterations in heart and blood vessels. Early diagnostics and prognostics could be the best possible solution in CVD management. OMICS (genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics) approaches could be able to tackle the challenges against CVDs.

Dispersion of Carbon Nanotubes with "Green" Detergents.

Molecules

May 2021

Department of Environmental Engineering, Islamic University of Indonesia (UII), Jl. Kaliurang Km 14.5, Yogyakarta 55584, Indonesia.

Solubilization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is a fundamental technique for the use of CNTs and their conjugates as nanodevices and nanobiodevices. In this work, we demonstrate the preparation of CNT suspensions with "green" detergents made from coconuts and bamboo as fundamental research in CNT nanotechnology. Single-walled CNTs (SWNTs) with a few carboxylic acid groups (3-5%) and pristine multi-walled CNTs (MWNTs) were mixed in each detergent solution and sonicated with a bath-type sonicator.

Insulin resistance is a characteristic of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus associated with obesity and caused by the failure of pancreatic beta cells to secrete sufficient amount of insulin. Andrographolide (AND) improves beta-cell reconstruction and inhibits fat-cell formation. This research aimed to improve the delivery of water-insoluble AND in self-nanoemulsifying (ASNE) formulation, tested in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats and 3T3-L1 preadipocyte cells.

Oil, emulsifier, and co-emulsifier were selected as the carrier for the PESE formulation through a propolis-extract solubility test on each carrier, followed by evaluation of the nanoemulsion region in a pseudo ternary phase diagram. Pre-concentrate of PESE was prepared with the addition of 150 mg/mL propolis extract followed by characterization for the transmittance, globule size, zeta potential, thermodynamic stability, robustness to dilution, and accelerated stability.
