Dental caries is a highly prevalent chronic condition globally. In recent years, scientists have turned to natural compounds such as plant extracts as an alternative to address concerns related to biofilm-mediated disease transmission, increasing bacterial resistance, and the adverse impacts of antibiotics. Consequently, this study investigated the antimicrobial properties of ethanolic, hydroethanolic, and aqueous extracts of L.

In cases where permanent teeth have closed apices and completely erupted roots, the probability of root fractures is increased due to the stable support given by the adjacent bone and periodontal tissues. Fractures have the potential to affect several dental structures, including the pulp, dentin, cementum, bone, and periodontal tissues. In cases of horizontal root fractures (HRF), the apical section typically maintains vitality; however, the present case presented an unusual apex necrosis.

Background: Sepsis, a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a host's dysregulated response to infection with an inflammatory process, becomes a real challenge for the healthcare systems. L-carnitine (LC) has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties as in previous studies. Thus, we aimed to determine the effects of LC on inflammation, oxidative stress, and clinical parameters in critically ill septic patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Biodegradable films made from sago are key for reducing environmental impact in food packaging but often lack the necessary properties for effective use.
  • The research aimed to enhance these films by adding varying amounts (1%, 3%, and 5%) of nano- and micro-ZnO, leading to significant improvements in thickness, water vapor permeability, optical properties, and thermal stability.
  • The results indicated that films with micro-ZnO not only had better mechanical strength but also showcased strong UV protection, positioning sago-based biodegradable films as a viable alternative to traditional plastic packaging.

Polyamines have received a lot of attention since the 1990s because of their anti-aging, anti-chronic disease, and proliferative effects. Wheat germ was reported as one of the natural sources of high polyamine, especially spermidine. The current study used three types of wheat germ: group A was industrially separated germ from whole grain, group B was the commercially available germinated wheat germ, and group C was manually separated wheat germ from germinated grain.

A new look toward crown-to-implant ratio.

Am J Dent

February 2022

Biomedical Engineering - Biomechanics, School of Mechanical Engineering, College of Engineering, University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran.

Purpose: To clarify how crown-to-implant ratio (C-I ratio) influences the bone biomechanically with its two components: crown height and implant length.

Methods: This three-dimensional finite element study was performed in two phases. The first phase aimed to show the influence of the C-I ratio on the stresses in the peri-implant bone and the second phase to reveal the impact of each of the two components of the C-I ratio: crown height and implant length.

Myocardial ischemia (MI) is recognized as the most frequent cardiovascular disease which is the dominant cause of global morbidity and mortality. Artificial intelligence tools and integrative data analysis revealed superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, gap junction protein α, myosin heavy chains, and zinc finger transcription factor GATA4 are engaged in oxidative stress and in cardiomyopathy. Network analysis indicated that MAPK3 might be the highest distribution property and cut point in this network, which could be a potential candidate for preventing and treating oxidative stress in heart tissue.

Comparing dimensions of upper airway in patients with nasal septal deviation and healthy people in CBCT.

Am J Nucl Med Mol Imaging

February 2022

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Dental School, Isfahan (khorasgan) Branch, Islamic Azad University Isfahan, Iran.

Nasal septal deviation causes the obstruction of the nasal lateral wall and sinus cavities as well as bringing some respiratory problems. Furthermore, the obstruction of the upper airway tract can cause changes in normal breathing process, which itself has an important effect on the normal development of both the mandibular and facial areas. This study aimed to assess the dimensions of airway in patients suffering from nasal septal deviation as well as comparing them with healthy individuals through CBCT images.

Coronaviruses, which have been enveloped nonsegmented positive-sense RNA viruses, were first mentioned in the mid-1960s and can attack people as well as a wide range of animals (including mammals and birds). Three zoonotic coronaviruses have been identified as the cause of large-scale epidemics over the last two decades: Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), and swine acute diarrhea syndrome (SADS). Epithelial cells in the respiratory and gastrointestinal tract are the principal targeted cells, and viral shedding occurs via these systems in diverse ways such as through fomites, air, or feces.
