Objective: To investigate the incidence of male sexual dysfunction (SD) including erectile dysfunction (ErD) and ejaculatory dysfunction (EjD) after minimally invasive rectal cancer surgery.

Background: Male SD significantly affects post-rectal cancer surgery quality of life (QOL). Current assessments using the International Index of Erectile Function-5 are unsuitable for patients with reduced postoperative sexual activity, because it assumes sexual intercourse.

Article Synopsis
  • The WHO has classified tumoral intraductal pre-invasive neoplasms of bile duct (TIDN) into three categories: intraductal papillary neoplasm of bile duct (IPNB), intraductal papillary oncocytic neoplasm (IOPN), and intraductal tubulopapillary neoplasm (ITPN).
  • A study of 227 cases found IPNB as the most common type, with significant agreement (substantial) among pathologists on the classification but only slight agreement on the grading system.
  • The grading revealed 42% of TIDNs were type 1 (less aggressive) and 58% type 2 (more aggressive), with a notable frequency of

Aim: The Japan Diabetes Society (JDS)/Japan Geriatrics Society (JGS) Joint Committee reported 'Glycemic Targets for Elderly Patients with Diabetes' in 2016. Based on this recommendation, we aimed to clarify 1) the achievement status of glycemic targets in the elderly and 2) the presence of hypoglycemia in real life among elderly individuals with an HbA1c below the lower limit.

Subjects And Methods: [Analysis I] In 326 elderly with diabetes ≥65 years of age visiting the outpatient department specializing in diabetes, the proportions of patients with HbA1c values below the lower limit and the use of drugs potentially associated with severe hypoglycemia (e.

Purpose: To investigate the impacts of emergency calls made using mobile phones on the quality of dispatcher-assisted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (DA-CPR) and survival from out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs) that were not witnessed by emergency medical service (EMS).

Methods: In this prospective study, we collected data for 2530 DA-CPR-attempted medical emergency cases (517 using mobile phones and 2013 using landline phones) and 2980 non-EMS-witnessed OHCAs (600 using mobile phones and 2380 using landline phones). Time factors and quality of DA-CPR, backgrounds of callers and outcomes of OHCAs were compared between mobile and landline phone groups.

Context: Adrenal vein sampling (AVS) is essential for identifying a surgically curable form of primary aldosteronism (PA), but accurate placement of the sampling catheter is technically challenging. Intraprocedural cortisol measurement can confirm the catheter's position, thereby increasing the AVS success rate.

Objective And Methods: We developed a quick cortisol assay (QCA) that uses immunochromatography and gold nanoparticles and can be performed either semiquantitatively or quantitatively.

The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic performance of radiological technologists (RTs) in the detection of malignant microcalcifications and to evaluate how much computer-aided detection (CADe) improved their performances compared with those by expert breast radiologists (BRs). Six board-certified breast RTs and four board-certified BRs participated in a free-response receiver operating characteristic observer study. The dataset consisted of 75 cases (25 malignant, 25 benign, and 25 normal cases) of digital mammograms, selected from the digital database for screening mammography provided by the University of South Florida.

Background: Although bronchoscopy has an important role in the diagnosis of lung cancer, more invasive procedures, such as CT-guided biopsy or surgery, are needed when transbronchial approaches fail.

Objective: We investigated the usefulness of endobronchial ultrasonic-transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) for lung cancer diagnosis.

Subjects And Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 122 cases who were finally diagnosed to have lung cancer from among 388 cases who underwent bronchoscopy because of abnormal shadows on their chest X-ray or CT.

We describe the case of a 63-year-old man whose electrocardiogram showed transition of the ST segment from a J wave to a coved-type elevation in precordial leads before ventricular fibrillation induced by right coronary artery vasospasm. Simultaneously, the ST segment in inferior leads was gradually depressed with a J wave. Considering the sudden death of his son, induced ventricular fibrillation by programmed electrical stimulation, and modulations of the ST segment in the precordial and inferior leads by pilsicainide, some abnormalities in repolarization associated with Brugada syndrome or early repolarization syndrome might have caused these atypical ST-segment manifestations.

An 82-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital due to repeated episodes of syncope with incontinence. Electrocardiography showed torsades de pointes, complete atrioventricular (AV) block, T-wave inversions and a prolonged QTc interval. Urgent coronary angiography showed no significant coronary stenosis and left ventriculography demonstrated typical abnormal wall motion of takotusbo cardiomyopathy.

We investigated the effects of hormonal changes on decreased urine output induced by IPPV with PEEP in 8 dogs anesthetized with nitrous oxide-oxygen-pentobarbital. The decreased urine output could be attributed to the hemodynamic changes as previously reported. The results of this investigation suggest that renin, angiotensin II and ADH do not have significant influences on the decreased urine output.

We investigated the effects of dopamine (Dop) and/or dibutyryl cyclic AMP (DBcAMP) on renal dysfunction induced by IPPV with PEEP in 32 anesthetized dogs. Blood pressure, pulse rate, creatinine clearance and free water clearance were not significantly altered during the experiment. On the other hand, cardiac index (CI), renal blood flow (RBF), urine output and fractional sodium excretion (FENa) were all decreased significantly by PEEP.

One year after total gastrectomy due to gastric cancer, the 50-year-old male patient underwent lateral segmentectomy, since metastatic foci occurred in the outer region of the liver. Three months thereafter, metastatic foci occurred in the right anterior lobe of the liver, causing obstructive jaundice. PTCD was performed, and after repeated anticancer doses of 10 mg of Cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (CDDP) plus 10 mg of adriamycin (ADM) in the tubing, partial opening of the obstructive bile duct was achieved.
