Purpose: To identify predictors of anterior mobility of the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus (PHLM) among patient demographics (age, sex), clinical characteristics (a history of catching or locking symptoms [CLS], body mass index, alignment of limb), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of 4 restraints: anteroinferior popliteomeniscal fascicle (aiPMF), posterosuperior popliteomeniscal fascicle (psPMF), posteroinferior popliteomeniscal fascicle (piPMF), and meniscofibular ligament (MFibL).

Methods: Between October 2010 and December 2014, patients who underwent arthroscopic measurement of mobility of the PHLM were identified. The Sakai classification was used to classify aiPMF and psPMF on MRI into the following 3 types: type A, the fascicle was depicted with obvious continuity and with a low-intensity band; type B, depicted with continuity but with an ambiguous intensity structure; and type C, depicted with discontinuity or not visible.

  • Bronchial thermoplasty (BT) is a treatment for severe asthma that can reduce asthma attacks, emergency visits, and hospitalizations, but the factors affecting its effectiveness are not well understood.
  • In a study involving 20 patients, it was found that 30% achieved clinical remission post-BT, with a lower asthma control test (ACT) score predictive of success; those with remission had an ACT score of 11 compared to 15 for those without.
  • This research suggests that younger adults with severe asthma and a specific range of lung function prior to BT may benefit more, indicating the potential for pre-treatment assessments to guide BT outcomes.

Background: We report two cases of biceps brachii and brachialis paralysis due to musculocutaneous nerve injury in which elbow joint flexion was reconstructed using rotational transfer of the latissimus dorsi muscle with sutures to the radial and ulnar tuberosities, thereby enabling flexion by simultaneous activation of the humeroradial and humeroulnar joints. In cases of associated brachialis paralysis, weaker flexion strength can be expected when the forearm is in a pronated position than when it is in a supinated state. To the best of our knowledge, no previous study has reported the rotational position of the forearm during elbow joint flexion reconstruction.

Venetoclax (VEN) combination regimens are now recognized as effective against acute myeloid leukemia (AML). However, the prognosis of patients who do not attain a composite complete response (cCR) is extremely poor, and clinical determinants of response remain unknown. Medical records of 57 patients with AML treated with VEN combination regimens from April 2021 to March 2022 at six institutions were retrospectively analyzed.

Background/aims: In stereomicroscopic sample isolation processing, the cutoff value (≥4 mm) of stereomicroscopically visible white cores indicates high diagnostic sensitivity. We aimed to evaluate endoscopic ultrasound-guided tissue acquisition (EUS-TA) using a simplified stereomicroscopic on-site evaluation of upper gastrointestinal subepithelial lesions (SELs).

Methods: In this multicenter prospective trial, we performed EUS-TA using a 22-gauge Franseen needle in 34 participants with SELs derived from the upper gastrointestinal muscularis propria, requiring pathological diagnosis.

Article Synopsis
  • A study investigates how to use machine learning to predict prescription errors in dosing oral prednisolone, a high-risk drug, due to the common issue of wrong doses causing harm to patients.
  • Data was collected from electronic medical records, analyzed using cluster analysis to group similar prescribing patterns, and different machine learning models were tested to improve accuracy.
  • Results showed that preprocessing the data with the SMOTE method enhanced model performance, with the best results coming from the BRF model (ROC-AUC: 0.917) and SVM after preprocessing (ROC-AUC: 0.820).

Background: Anaplastic lymphoma kinase tyrosine kinase inhibitors are standard therapeutic agents prescribed for anaplastic lymphoma kinase-positive non-small cell lung cancer, and treatment with these agents has been shown to contribute to long-term survival in patients. However, there is no consensus regarding the course of treatment after the onset of anaplastic lymphoma kinase tyrosine kinase inhibitors related drug-induced interstitial lung disease. Here, we present a case of successful lorlatinib treatment after the onset of drug-induced interstitial lung disease caused by alectinib.

Lenalidomide is a synthetic analog of thalidomide formed by the removal of one keto group (plus the addition of an amino group); it has anti-tumor activities beneficial for the treatment of hematologic malignancies. However, lenalidomide distribution to brain in animal models is reportedly low compared with that of thalidomide. The aim of this study was to evaluate plasma and cerebrospinal fluid concentrations of lenalidomide in three patients with malignant hematologic malignancies.

Purpose: Gustilo-Anderson type IIIB and IIIC open fractures of the lower extremities require reconstruction of extensively injured soft tissues using a free flap; however, impaired blood flow through the flap is an early postoperative complication. To detect flap congestion due to venous thrombosis, blood glucose and lactate level measurements within the flap are taken to determine variations in these levels. We aimed to detect early-stage venous congestion and to perform salvage operations.
