Gavin Herbert Eye Institute-Center for Translational Vision Research, Department of Ophthalmology, Department of Physiology and Biophysics, University of California Irvine School of Medicine, Irvine, California, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Extended glucocorticoid treatment can cause ocular hypertension and lead to iatrogenic open-angle glaucoma, resembling primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).
  • Researchers have shown that weekly injections of dexamethasone-21-acetate in mice result in significant intraocular pressure (IOP) increase, retinal ganglion cell loss, and optic nerve damage.
  • The mouse model exhibits key features of POAG and can be used to explore how glaucoma affects the trabecular meshwork and retinal ganglion cell axons, as well as to test new treatment methods.

Introduction: COVID-19 created a global need for healthcare worker (HCW) training. Initially, mass trainings focused on public health workers and physicians working in intensive care units. However, in resource-constrained settings, nurses and general practitioners provide most patient care, typically lacking the training and equipment to manage critically ill patients.

  • By age 40, over 90% of adults with Down syndrome develop Alzheimer’s disease, with many progressing to dementia, despite having few typical vascular risk factors.
  • This study analyzed how small vessel cerebrovascular disease impacts Alzheimer's disease progression and neurodegeneration in adults with Down syndrome, using MRI and plasma biomarker data from 185 participants.
  • Results indicated a complex relationship where white matter hyperintensity (WMH) levels influenced phosphorylated tau, linked by glial fibrillary acidic protein, suggesting that cerebrovascular health affects Alzheimer’s pathology in this population.

Adverse cardiovascular (CV) events have declined in Western countries due at least in part to aggressive risk factor control, including dyslipidemia management. The American and European (Western) dyslipidemia treatment guidelines have contributed significantly to the reduction in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) incidence in the respective populations. However, their direct extrapolation to Indian patients does not seem appropriate for the reasons described below.

December 2024

Diabetes Technology Society, Clinical Professor of Medicine, U.C. San Francisco, CA, United States of America; Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology, Medical Director, Diabetes Research Institute, Mills-Peninsula Medical Center, San Mateo, CA, United States of America.

Article Synopsis
  • The use of advanced diabetes technology, like insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors, is rapidly increasing among diabetes patients, especially those needing insulin.
  • * As these devices become more common in preoperative and surgical settings, they can complicate diabetes management for healthcare providers unfamiliar with them.
  • * This consensus statement provides guidance and education for perioperative clinicians to help them understand and effectively manage patients using these diabetes technologies.

  • The study identified factors that delay the start of salvage radiation therapy in prostate cancer patients post-prostatectomy, specifically focusing on PSA levels.
  • It analyzed data from 81 patients treated between 2011 and 2022, noting that insurance type significantly influenced the timing of treatment initiation, with HMO and PPO patients more likely to experience delays.
  • The findings highlight the importance of PSA monitoring and access to timely care, especially for patients with certain insurance plans, suggesting that healthcare policies may impact treatment outcomes.

Neoadjuvant immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) combined with chemotherapy has improved survival outcomes in locally-advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, its impact on surgery has not been fully elucidated. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare surgical outcomes between neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy and chemotherapy alone in resectable NSCLC.

  • Next-generation ALK tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) like alectinib, brigatinib, and lorlatinib show better progression-free survival compared to chemotherapy or crizotinib for first-line treatment of ALK-positive advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
  • The study conducted a network meta-analysis (NMA) to compare the efficacy of lorlatinib with other ALK TKIs, focusing on progression-free survival and other outcomes, using data from ten trials.
  • Results indicated lorlatinib significantly improved progression-free survival compared to both alectinib and brigatinib, supporting its use as an effective first-line treatment for this type of lung cancer.

Dental instrumentation with hand-held devices is associated with discomfort, fatigue and musculoskeletal diseases or repetitive stress injuries. The goal of this in vivo study was to determine the effect of an ergonomic handle sheath on muscle work, comfort and fatigue associated with (a) piezoelectric scaling by hygienists with and without musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), and (b) dental cavity preparation by healthy dentists using a dental micromotor. Two groups of ten hygienists each tested the piezoelectric scaler.

Base editing of the GLB1 gene is therapeutic in GM1 gangliosidosis patient-derived cells.

Mol Genet Metab

October 2024

Division of Metabolic Disorders, Children's Hospital of Orange County Specialists, Orange, CA 92868, United States; Department of Pediatrics, University of California-Irvine School of Medicine, Irvine, CA 92697, United States. Electronic address:

GM1 gangliosidosis is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disease caused by pathogenic variants in the GLB1 gene, limiting the production of active lysosomal β-galactosidase. Phenotypic heterogeneity is due in part to variant type, location within GLB1, and the amount of residual enzyme activity; in the most severe form, death occurs in infancy. With no FDA approved therapeutics, development of efficacious strategies for the disease is pivotal.
