Background: Given the observed olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions in patients with COVID-19 and recent findings on taste receptors possible important activities in the immune system, we elected to estimate the correlation between COVID-19 mortality and polymorphism of a particular type of bitter taste receptor gene called TAS2R38, in a worldwide epidemiological point of view.
Methods: Pooled rate of each of the rs713598, rs1726866, rs10246939, and PAV/AVI polymorphisms of the TAS2R38 gene was obtained in different countries using a systematic review methodology and its relationship with the mortality of COVID-19. Data were analyzed by the comprehensive meta-analysis software and SPSS.

Short Tandem Repeats (STRs), which are located out of pseudo-autosomal parts of the human Y chromosome and passed-down from fathers to the male offspring in a non-recombinant form, are regarded as appropriate markers for forensic purposes and evolutionary investigations. Few studies concerned the genotyping of Y chromosome short tandem repeats (Y-STRs) among the ethnic groups of the north of Iran, especially the province of Golestan which is a multiethnic region of Iran. Thus, in this work we investigated the frequency of Y-STR haplotypes among the male population from Golestan province, to elucidate their identity and kinship patterns.

Background/aim: TheY-chromosome mainly consists of heterochromatin regions that have a father-to-son inheritance. Short tandem repeat polymorphic (STRP) markers distributed all over the chromosome provide the opportunity for investigations in forensic medicine and ancestral lineage studies. Due to the existence of wide varieties of geographical and ethnic groups in Iran, studying Y-STRP markers is necessary for further applications.

Background: Skin allograft is the gold standard of wound coverage in patients with extensive burns; however, it is considered as a temporary wound coverage and rejection of the skin allograft is considered inevitable. In our study, skin allograft as a permanent coverage in deep burns is evaluated.
Methods: Skin allograft survival was assessed in 38 patients from March 2009 to March 2014, retrospectively.

Objective: To investigate the pattern of mortality caused by road traffic accidents and its associated factors.
Methods: The retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in the Fars province of Iran and comprised data of all people having died in road traffic accidents from March 21, 2011, to March 19, 2012. Using census method, all files related to deaths in road accidents were reviewed at the Legal Medicine Centre.

Hydatid disease of the liver is a parasitic infection primarily caused by the larvae of Echinococcus granulosus. Hydatid cysts may remain clinically silent for many years and are often an incidental finding on ultrasonography performed for unrelated reasons. Sudden death due to unrecognized hydatid cysts can occur, and rare case reports of this kind are present in the literature.

We introduce a case of disputed parentage with 2 presumptive related fathers, although using multiple genetic systems, neither of the 2 fathers may be excluded. Nineteen autosomal short tandem repeat typing and 12 X-chromosome markers could not clarify the case. We can conclude that forensic autosomic short tandem repeats included in commercial kits are not sufficient to definitively discriminate parent-offspring with related putative fathers in forensic laboratories, and supplementary investigations should be available for selected cases.
