S. H. Ho Urology Centre, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Surgery, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, 4/F LCW Clinical Sciences Building, Prince of Wales Hospital, Shatin, Hong Kong.

Objective: To investigate the impact of ageing on survival outcomes in Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) treated non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) patients and its synergy with adequate BCG treatment.

Method: Patients with NMIBC who received BCG treatment from 2001 to 2020 were divided into group 1 (< = 70 years) and group 2 (> 70 years). Overall Survival (OS), Cancer-Specific Survival (CSS), Recurrence-Free Survival (RFS), and Progression-Free Survival (PFS) were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method.

Objective:  This study aimed to evaluate the potential risk factors of lifetime urolithiasis occurrence on a nationwide scale in Iran.

Methods:  All data regarding urinary stone events were extracted from the cross-sectional Iran National Stone Survey (INSS) study, and the possible determinants of urolithiasis incidence were evaluated.

Results:  Our multivariable logistic regression suggested that while older age at presentation, male sex, and a positive family history of urolithiasis in either of the patient's parents or siblings were all significantly associated with an increased odds of lifetime urolithiasis occurrence (all P < .

Introduction: Acute pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) is a life-threatening disease. Considering the availability and accessibility of assessing the serum lipids, this study aims to define the predictive value of lipid profile, as well as the history of lipid disorders, for the mortality of PTE patients.

Content: Clinical studies, in which the relation of lipid profile, including triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and total cholesterol, as well as history of imbalance of lipids, with mortality of PTE patients was reported, were included.

Background: Adherence to the transition from oral agents to insulin injections in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus therapy varies among patients and is not uniformly successful, leading to suboptimal glycemic control in certain cases. This study aims to investigate the potential correlation between cognitive and daily functional capabilities and glycemic control in middle-aged to older adults (40-74 years old) diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus for less than 10 years, specifically those who have recently transitioned to insulin injections and have lower education levels within the context of a developing country.

Methods: A case-control study was conducted with 30 poorly controlled diabetes mellitus (PCDM) patients recognized by HbA1c levels > 8% compared to 30 fairly controlled diabetes mellitus (FCDM) patients with HbA1c levels ≤ 8%.

Article Synopsis
  • Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a frequent reason for acute abdominal pain in emergency settings, but a definitive diagnostic method is still unclear.
  • This systematic review evaluated 21 studies with nearly 2,000 patients to determine how accurate ultrasonography is for diagnosing SBO, using comprehensive statistical analysis.
  • The results indicate ultrasonography has a high sensitivity (93%) and good specificity (80%) for SBO diagnosis, suggesting it is a promising tool, though further global studies are needed to reinforce these findings.

Effects of Posterior Tibial Nerve Stimulation on Fecal Incontinence: An Umbrella Review.

Neuromodulation

February 2024

Research Center for Evidence-based Medicine, Iranian EBM Centre, A Joanna Briggs Institute Center of Excellence, Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, Tabriz, Iran. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the effectiveness of posterior tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) methods, specifically TPTNS and PPTNS, in treating fecal incontinence (FI) by reviewing previous systematic reviews.
  • A systematic search of multiple databases found 14 relevant systematic reviews, but results showed inconsistencies, with most indicating some improvement in bowel habits and quality of life.
  • While PTNS did not show significant differences in FI episodes compared to sham or sacral nerve stimulation (SNS), it did result in fewer FI episodes than sham and performed worse than SNS in improving incontinence scores.
