The expression of costimulatory molecules such as MHC-II, CD86 and CD83 on dendritic cells (DCs) are strongly regulated during cellular activation. Ubiquitination of some of these markers by the E3 ubiquitin ligase MARCH-I affects the maturation state of DCs and subsequently modulates immune responses. Purpose: The aim of this study was to report the results of the use of real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the diagnosis of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in cornea donors at the Central Eye Bank of Iran.

Methods: Between 2014 and 2016, all cornea donors that had negative screening serologic results for hepatitis B (HB) surface antigen, HB surface antibody (Ab), hepatitis C virus Ab, human immune deficiency virus Ab, human T-cell leukemia virus Ab, and syphilis, and positive serology for HB core Ab were subjected to real-time PCR with a detection limit of 400 IU/mL to identify HBV DNA. Positive results for HBV DNA were considered occult HBV infections in these donors.

The immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) have been considered as an appropriate candidate for treatment of autoimmune diseases. Previous studies have revealed that treatment with BM-MSCs may modulate immune responses and alleviate the symptoms in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) mice, an animal model of multiple sclerosis. Background: Using two logistic regression models, we determined the associates of poor physical and mental health related quality of life (HRQoL) among beta thalassemia patients.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study which was conducted during 2006 and 2007 in outpatient adult thalassemia clinic, Blood Transfusion Organization, Tehran, Iran, Short Form 36 (SF-36) was used for measuring HRQoL in 179 patients with beta thalassemia (major/intermedia). We determined scores higher than third quartiles of obtained PCS and MCS scores as the cutoff points of good HRQoL.

In 1974, the government of Iran established Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization (IBTO) as national and centralized transfusion system. Since then donations of blood may not be remunerated and therapy with blood and its components are free of charges for all Iranian patients.
