Malignant melanoma of the conjunctiva is a rare tumor of the ocular surface with potential fatal consequences and a high likelihood of recurrence. Although routes for extending the tumor, including local, hematogenous, and lymphatogenous, are pretty straightforward, the indirect extension through free-floating tumoral cells to the nasolacrimal duct is not described thoroughly. We report a case of malignant melanoma of the conjunctiva which presented with local recurrence in the intranasal cavity and lacrimal sac two years after the primary surgery (without involvement of the ocular surface and punctum on the second occasion).

Background: Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is considered the choice treatment for patients suffering from coronary artery disease (CAD). In the inflammatory milieu of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) can induce a platelet pro-inflammatory state which could exacerbate post-CABG inflammatory status while affecting hemostatic function in patients. Therefore, focusing on platelets, the study presented here attempted to evaluate the pro-inflammatory and immunomodulatory profile of platelets as well as pro-aggregatory status during CABG.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explored the use of a deep learning model to predict COVID-19 patient outcomes based on chest CT images, aiming to improve its clinical application through deep privacy-preserving federated learning (DPFL).
  • - A total of 3,055 patients from 19 medical centers were analyzed, with the data being divided for training, validation, and testing to evaluate model performance using metrics like accuracy and sensitivity.
  • - The results showed that the centralized model achieved an accuracy of 76% and the DPFL model had an accuracy of 75%, with both models demonstrating similar specificity and comparable area under the curve (AUC) values, suggesting no significant statistical differences between the two approaches.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explores how exosomes from sperm of men with a specific infertility condition called oligoasthenoteratozoospermia affect gene expression related to the female reproductive system, particularly in the endometrium.
  • - Researchers isolated exosomes using ultracentrifugation from samples of both fertile men and those with the infertility condition, then analyzed their structure and influence on endometrial cell gene expression after treatment.
  • - Findings revealed that exosomes from the oligoasthenoteratozoospermia group significantly reduced the expression of several key implantation-related genes in comparison to exosomes from normal sperm, suggesting a negative impact on endometrial receptivity.

Purpose: Long non-coding RNAs are an essential component of competing endogenous RNA regulatory axes and play their role by sponging microRNAs and interfering with the regulation of gene expression. Because of the broadness of competing endogenous RNA interaction networks, they may help investigate treatment targets in complicated disorders.

Methods: This study performed a systematic scoping review to assess verified loops of competing endogenous RNAs in retinoblastoma, emphasizing the competing endogenous RNAs axis related to long non-coding RNAs.
