As a glycerol-based polyester, poly(glycerol azelaic acid) (PGAz) has shown great potential for biomedical applications, such as tissue engineering. However, it tends to show low mechanical strength and a relatively fast biodegradation rate, limiting its capability of mimicking and supporting a broad range of hard tissues such as bone. Moreover, the typical thermal curing process of poly(glycerol--diacids) is one of their drawbacks.

During the past decades, many researchers have tried to encapsulate medicines in biopolymer nanogels as injectable medicines. In the present study, dual-responsive bovine serum albumin (BSA)-loaded nanogels prepared from sodium alginate grafted poly (N-vinyl caprolactam) (PNVCL) have been reported. First, PNVCL-g-sodium alginate (PNVCL-g-Alg) was synthesized through free radical polymerization, and then nanogels were obtained from ionic crosslinking of sodium alginate in the presence of BSA.

Using boehmite as an available and low-cost natural compound, a bi-functional catalytic composite is prepared through vinyl-functionalization of boehmite, followed by polymerization with the as-prepared bis-vinylimidazolium bromide ionic liquid and supporting of phosphotungstic acid. The catalyst was characterized via ICP, XRD, TGA, FTIR, SEM/EDS and elemental mapping analysis and applied for promoting alcohol oxidation reaction and one-pot tandem alcohol oxidation/Knoevenagel condensation reaction in aqueous media under mild reaction condition. The results indicated high catalytic activity of the catalyst for both reactions.

The structure of the skin only allows those hydrophobic elements to penetrate through the depth of the skin with low molecular weight (less than 500 Da) and low daily dose (less than 100 mg/day). Skin penetration of many drugs such as antibiotics at a high daily dose remains an unresolved challenge. In this study a transdermal patch using cephalexin as an antibiotic drug model was developed.

Biopolymer-based injectable hydrogels provide great potential as bone tissue engineering (BTE) scaffolds on account of biocompatibility, and pore interconnectivity that enables delivery of cells and/or signaling molecules for bone repair. Recently, Gelatin hydrogels based on H-bonds were considered in response to concerns around the chemical crosslinking agents. In this study, a self-healing gelatin hydrogel with remarkable compressive and self-healing properties was prepared via formation of quadruple hydrogen bonds between ureidopyrimidinon functional groups, which were substituted on NH groups of gelatin(GelUPy).

School of Engineering, Edith Cowan University, Joondalup, Perth, WA, 6027, Australia; UNESCO Centre for Membrane Science and Technology, School of Chemical Engineering, University of New South Wales, Sydney, NSW, 2052, Australia. Electronic address:

Due to the implications of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on the environment and public health, great attention has been recently made to finding innovative materials and methods for PFAS removal. In this work, PFAS is considered universal contamination which can be found in many wastewater streams. Conventional materials and processes used to remove and degrade PFAS do not have enough competence to address the issue particularly when it comes to eliminating short-chain PFAS.

Cyclotriphosphazen-hexa imine ligand was prepared through successive reactions of phosphonitrilchloride trimer with 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde and (3-aminopropyl) triethoxy silane. The as-prepared ligand was then covalently grafted on boehmite to furnish an efficient support for the immobilization of Pd nanoparticles and synthesis of a novel heterogeneous catalyst for hydrogenation of nitro arenes. The catalytic tests revealed that the catalyst had excellent catalytic activity for hydrogenation of various nitro arenes with different steric and electronic features under mild reaction condition in aqueous media.

A nanocomposite bone scaffold was fabricated from pullulan, a natural extracellular polysaccharide. Pullulan (PULL) was blended with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and a nano-platform with ball-stick morphology, Ag-Silica Janus particles (Ag-Silica JPs), which were utilized to fabricate nanocomposite scaffold with enhanced mechanical and biological properties. The Ag-Silica JPs were synthesized via a one-step sol-gel method and used to obtain synergistic properties of silver and silica's antibacterial and bioactive effects, respectively.

Four-dimensional (4 D) printing is a novel emerging technology, which can be defined as the ability of 3 D printed materials to change their form and functions. The term 'time' is added to 3 D printing as the fourth dimension, in which materials can respond to a stimulus after finishing the manufacturing process. 4 D printing provides more versatility in terms of size, shape, and structure after printing the construct.

For the first time, organic tannic acid (TA) molecules and then inorganic praseodymium (Pr) cations as corrosion inhibitors were successfully loaded into a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF8)-type porous coordination polymer (PCP) decorated on molybdenum disulfide, MoS, (MS)-based transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) to create novel hybrid mesoporous Pr/TA-ZIF8@MS nanoreservoirs. Thereafter, the hybrid nanoreservoirs were embedded into the epoxy matrix for the preparation of smart pH-triggered nanocoatings. Characterizations of the Pr/TA-ZIF8@MS nanoreservoirs via Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric (TG), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM)/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) experiments confirmed the fabrication of mesoporous structures comprising Pr/TA interfacial interactions with ZIF8-decorated MS nanoplatelets possessing high thermal stability and compact/dense configuration features with a framework reorientation.

Electrospun nanofibers for skin tissue engineering applications face two main challenges. The low thickness of electrospun mats is the main reason for their weak load-bearing performance at clinical applications and limited cell penetration due to their small pore sizes. We have developed multi-layered nanofibrous 3D (M3DN) scaffolds comprising gelatin, polyvinyl alcohol, and chondroitin sulfate (CS) by an electrospinning method and attaching three electrospun layers via ethanol to cause interface fibers to come in contact with each other.
