Background and objective The treatment of early-stage laryngeal glottic cancer involves surgery or radiotherapy, and both have similar survival rates. However, discrepancies between systematic reviews in the literature point towards the continuous need for more data. In this study, we aimed to investigate the oncologic value of surgery at an ENT university department of a tertiary hospital in Greece.

Parotid Metastasis of Early-Stage Upper Eyelid Sebaceous Carcinoma: A Case Presentation and a Literature Review.

Metastasis from early-stage sebaceous carcinoma of the eyelid to the salivary glands is considered very rare, occurring in less than 3% of early-stage patients. We report the case of a 72-year-old Caucasian man with a parotid tumor. Fine needle aspiration was consistent with a salivary duct carcinoma.

A "Tie-Over" Hemostatic Approach in Emergency Department: An Alternative Option for Recurrent Episodes of Postoperative Intraoral Hemorrhage.

Objective: This case series aimed to describe a hemostatic technique that has been applied in patients admitted to emergency department (ED) of a tertiary hospital due to recurrent episodes of intraoral hemorrhage (IOH) after various dentoalveolar operations. The "tie-over" approach involved the intraoral use of Xeroform® gauze (as compressive bolster dressing) and the oral rinsing with a liquid mixture of hemostatic agents.

Materials And Methods: Between February 1, 2014, and July 31, 2017, we retrospectively reviewed the medical data and records of patients in ED who chiefly complained about IOH.

A closed-loop audit of the prescription practice of topical antibiotics for acute infective conjunctivitis.

The implementation of guideline recommendations for antibiotics prescription for the management of patients with acute infective conjunctivitis (AIC) in primary care departments remains below par. Our objective was to assess the impact of clinical audit on adherence to evidence-based indications for prescription of antibiotic eye drops in patients diagnosed with AIC, in the setting of a primary care practice in western Greece. We conducted a retrospective audit to evaluate the current prescription practice of antibiotics for the management of AIC.

Mitral valve repair with the use of the "Memo 3D ReChord" ring.

Background: From a variety of ring types, semirigid ring is more preferred for mitral annuloplasty during mitral valve repair particularly in patients whose native mitral saddle shape annulus is well maintained. During mitral annuloplasty artificial chord implantation with the appropriate neochord length is surgically challenging. We present our experience of using the Memo 3D ReChord, a semirigid ring with additional chordal guiding system for mitral valve repair.

Advanced trauma life support course for medical students. A new era?

Introduction: Trauma represents a major public health issue and is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. A systematic approach toward dealing with trauma patients was facilitated through the ATLS program, which has become a milestone in trauma care. Our new ATLS course for medical students was set in motion in 2015.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common cancer in men. Diagnosis and risk assessment are widely based on serum Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) and biopsy, which might not represent the exact degree of PCa risk. Towards the discovery of biomarkers for better patient stratification, we performed proteomic analysis of Formalin Fixed Paraffin Embedded (FFPE) prostate tissue specimens using liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

Does minimal invasive cardiac surgery reduce the incidence of post-operative atrial fibrillation?

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common post-operative complication and tends to be the most common arrhythmia after cardiac surgery. The etiology and risk factors for post-operative AF are poorly understood, but older age, large left atrium, diffuse coronary artery disease, a history of AF paroxysms and in general, pre-existing cardiac conditions that cause restricting and susceptibility towards inflammation have been consistently linked with post-operative atrial fibrillation (POAF). It has been traditionally thought that post-operative AF is transient, well-tolerated, benign to the patient and self-limiting complication of cardiac surgery that was temporary and easily treated.

There are several differential diagnoses of unilateral sinus disease. One of these is inverted papilloma (IP) of the maxillary sinus, which is a common benign tumor with a substantial rate of malignant transformation. In general, endoscopic endonasal techniques for addressing the tumor are favored nowadays instead of classical external approaches.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the leading causes of death in men worldwide. The molecular features, associated with the onset and progression of the disease, are under vigorous investigation. Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues are valuable resources for large-scale studies; however, their application in proteomics is limited due to protein cross-linking.

Aortic rupture during endovascular repair of a postoperative coarctation pseudoaneurysm in an adult: Emergency lifesaving stent graft implantation.

We present a case with aortic rupture during an operation of thoracic endovascular aortic repair of an anastomotic pseudoaneurysm. This happened after the use of a low-pressure remodeling balloon inside the covered part of the deployed endografts. It was successfully treated with a second more centrally in the aortic arch-implanted endograft with full coverage of the left subclavian artery orifice.
