Purpose: Abdominal wall endometriosis consists of endometrial tissue between the peritoneum and the abdominal wall. The established treatment involves amenorrheic drugs-not always successful and tolerated-or invasive surgery. In this scenario, minimally invasive techniques such as cryoablation are a potential option.

2024 Scholars' Research Symposium Abstract: Effect of COVID-19 Pandemic on Routine Pediatric Vaccination Rates in 7 Upper Midwestern States.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic stressed healthcare systems by increasing patient loads and creating shortages of both staffing and medical supplies. As a result, the process of administering routine pediatric vaccinations was affected. Multiple studies have reported ongoing decreases in vaccination opportunities.

The associations between cardiovascular and pain responses to a cold pressor test differ between males and females.

Nociceptors contribute to the cardiovascular responses during a cold pressor test (CPT). While these responses are lower in females, data suggest that they perceive the CPT as more painful. Thus, we examined sex differences in associations between pain and cardiovascular responses to a CPT (Aim 1) as well as differences between females using (OC), and not using (NC), an oral contraceptive (Aim 2).

Effects of local mutations in quadratic iterations.

We introduce mutations in the process of discrete iterations of complex quadratic maps in the family fc(z)=z2+c. More specifically, we consider a "correct" function fc1 acting on the complex plane. A "mutation" fc0 is a different ("erroneous") map acting on a locus of given radius r around a mutation focal point ξ∗.

Cytokine storm in a massively burned pediatric patient.

Cytokine storm can occur in many different clinical conditions and lack of recognition can lead to death. While cytokines have been measured and trended in burn patients, cytokine storm has not been widely discussed or its treatment reported. We present herein the diagnosis and the treatment of a 5-year-old, 91% burn patient, who developed cytokine storm three times during his hospital course.

Probing quantum floating phases in Rydberg atom arrays.

The floating phase, a critical incommensurate phase, has been theoretically predicted as a potential intermediate phase between crystalline ordered and disordered phases. In this study, we investigate the different quantum phases that arise in ladder arrays comprising up to 92 neutral-atom qubits and experimentally observe the emergence of the quantum floating phase. We analyze the site-resolved Rydberg state densities and the distribution of state occurrences.

Use of disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs and risk of multiple myeloma in US Veterans with rheumatoid arthritis.

Background: Biologic (b) and targeted synthetic (ts) disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) used in the management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) target inflammatory pathways implicated in the pathogenesis of multiple myeloma (MM). It is unknown whether use of b/tsDMARDs affects the incidence of MM.

Methods: In this cohort study using Veterans Health Administration (VHA) data, we identified Veterans newly diagnosed with RA from 1/1/2002 to 12/31/2018 using diagnostic codes and medication fills.

Association of endovascular thrombectomy volume and outcomes in acute ischemic stroke: A National Inpatient Sample Study.

Background: Previous studies suggest a positive relationship between higher hospital endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) volume and improved outcomes. We investigated this association using the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database from 2016 to 2020.

Methods: A cross-sectional analysis of the NIS examined the relationship between hospital EVT volume and outcomes.

Improved healthcare utilization and economic outcomes of chronic subdural hematoma treatment with middle meningeal artery embolization compared to conventional surgical drainage.

Background: Middle meningeal artery embolization (MMAE) emerges as an alternative to conventional surgical drainage (CSD) for chronic subdural hematomas (cSDH). Several studies have suggested that MMAE improves the cost efficacy of cSDH treatment. However, further comprehensive analyses of the outcomes and healthcare costs of MMAE are necessary.

Familial Oculoauriculovertebral Spectrum: A Genomic Investigation of Autosomal Dominant Inheritance.

Objective: Oculoauriculovertebral spectrum (OAVS) encompasses abnormalities on derivatives from the first and second pharyngeal arches including macrostomia, hemifacial microsomia, micrognathia, preauricular tags, ocular, and vertebral anomalies. We present genetic findings on a 3-generation family affected with macrostomia, preauricular tags and ptosis following an autosomal dominant pattern.

Design: We generated whole-genome sequencing data for the proband, affected father, and unaffected paternal grandmother followed by Sanger sequencing on 23 family members for the top candidate gene mutations.

Insights into pathologic mechanisms occurring during serious adverse events following live zoster vaccination.

An effective live zoster vaccine has been widely used around the world. Although no deaths occurred in the original large clinical trial, we analyzed 10 serious adverse events, including six deaths that have subsequently occurred in four countries. The goal is to define the viral pathogenesis of these unexpected adverse events secondary to a viremia with dissemination of the vaccine virus.

The effect of cognitive task and gait speed on gait spatiotemporal parameters in athletes with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: Cross-sectional study.

Background: Restoring pre-injury normal gait following Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction (ACLR) is a critical challenge. The purpose of this study was to compare spatiotemporal parameters in athletes following ACL reconstruction with healthy athletes when cognitive load and speed were manipulated.

Methods: Twenty male soccer players with an ACLR history and 20 healthy matched individuals completed walking tasks under four conditions: with and without a cognitive load (auditory Stroop task), and at preferred speed as well as high speed (20% higher than the individual's preferred speed).

Methods And Results: Using data from the international, multicenter, and prospective GLORIA-AF (Global Registry on Long-Term Oral Antithrombotic Treatment in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation) Registry Phase III, we categorized patients with a recent diagnosis of non-valvular AF according to the number of previous strokes (either 0, 1, or ≥2 episodes).

Most deaths due to all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and utility task vehicles (UTVs) occur on public roads, despite manufacturers' warnings that they are not designed for roadway use. Our study objective was to determine rural residents' use, knowledge, and attitudes regarding ATVs/UTVs on public roads. A convenience sample of 2022 Farm Progress Show attendees were surveyed ( = 361).

Background: Immediately after birth, adaptation to the extrauterine environment includes an upregulation of fatty acid catabolism. Cystic fibrosis and untreated hypothyroidism exert a life-long impact on fatty acid metabolism, but their influence during this transitional period is unknown. Children and adults with cystic fibrosis exhibit unbalanced fatty acid composition, most prominently a relative deficit of linoleic acid.

Iowa emergency departments lack board-certified emergency physicians: A comprehensive statewide emergency department workforce study.

Introduction: The emergency physician (EP) workforce has been a recent focus after a workforce projection predicted a surplus of EPs by 2030. A previous study of Iowa emergency departments (EDs) demonstrated wide variability in ED staffing patterns and attributed it to the lack of EP job candidates. With the recent increase in emergency medicine (EM) residency positions, the objectives of this study were to understand how Iowa ED physician staffing has changed in regard to presence of board-certified EPs and what operational differences in Iowa EDs may be associated with staffing to provide insight into what may be occurring in other predominantly rural states.

Immune responses of cattle vaccinated by various routes with Mycobacterium bovis Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG).

Background: Mycobacterium bovis BCG is the human tuberculosis vaccine and is the oldest vaccine still in use today with over 4 billion people vaccinated since 1921. The BCG vaccine has also been investigated experimentally in cattle and wildlife by various routes including oral and parenteral. Thus far, oral vaccination studies of cattle have involved liquid BCG or liquid BCG incorporated into a lipid matrix.

Longitudinal Treatment Patterns of Chorea in North American Patients with Huntington's Disease: Data from Enroll-HD.

Introduction: Chorea is the primary manifestation of Huntington's disease. Different clinicians pursue varied approaches to chorea management, and real-world evidence describing them is needed. The objective of this study was to assess the presence and severity of chorea, chorea pharmacotherapy, and treatment practice, and patterns in a large natural-history cohort with Huntington's disease.
