From molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of melt-quenching and thermal aging procedures in pure Ag, Cu, Ag-Cu binary alloys, and Cu-Zr binary alloys, we have identified two distinct amorphous phases for a metastable undercooled liquid: the homogeneous L-phase with low shear rigidity and the heterogenous G-phase with much higher shear rigidity and a heterogeneity length scale Λ. Here, we examine two-phase equilibration studies showing that the G-phase melts to form the L-phase above ~1,000 K, which then transforms to form the crystal (X) phase; however, below the melting point of the G-Phase (~990 K), the X- and G-phases do not transform into each other. We suggest the presence of a G-phase is likely responsible for embrittlement often observed in metallic glasses.

Prognostication of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) at initial diagnosis relies on identification of pre-determined underlying genetic abnormalities. Nevertheless, the disease course of AML remains highly unpredictable and robust reliable prognostic biomarkers for newly diagnosed AML are lacking. We retrospectively explored two publicly available AML RNA-Seq datasets and found that inferior overall survival was associated with high- and low- transcript levels (" / ") compared to low- and high- transcript levels (" / ") in adult AML patients, with a hazard ratio for death of at least 2.

However, oncology practices are often resource constrained and lack the capacity to extend navigation services at the desired intensity for their patient population. The American Cancer Society (ACS) developed the ACS Community Access to Resources, Education, and Support (CARES) programme to expand navigation capacity through the training of students from local universities as volunteers to serve as non-clinical navigators to support cancer patients.

Decedent positive identification via visual comparisons of frontal sinus radiographs is commonly used in the medicolegal field; however, only a handful of studies have empirically tested this method. This study aimed to test the accuracy of visual assessment in frontal sinus identifications across a large and experientially diverse participant sample. The optical, morphological, and surface properties of these fungus-fabricated AgFe-BMNPs and their monometallic counterparts (AgNPs and FeNPs) were analyzed using sophisticated nanotechnology instruments. The UV-visible spectrum showed peaks at 231 nm and 415 nm for BMNPs and 450 nm and 386 nm for AgNPs and FeNPs, respectively.

We demonstrate a simple, low-cost, and ultracompact chiral resonant metasurface design, which, by strong local coupling to a quantum gain medium (quantum emitters), allows to implement an ultrathin metasurface laser, capable of generating tunable circularly polarized coherent lasing output. According to our detailed numerical investigations, the lasing emission can be transformed from linear to circular and switch from right- to left-handed circularly polarized (CP) not only by altering the metasurface chiral response but also by changing the polarization of a linearly polarized pump wave, thus enabling dynamic lasing-polarization control. Given the increasing interest for CP laser emission, our chiral metasurface laser design proves to be a versatile yet straightforward strategy to generate a strong and tailored CP emission laser, promising great potential for future applications in both photonics and materials science.

Brown carbon (BrC) has been recognized as an important light-absorbing carbonaceous aerosol, yet understanding of its influence on regional climate and air quality has been lacking, mainly due to the ignorance of regional coupled meteorology-chemistry models. Despite the abundance of literature surrounding the benefits of inquiry-based laboratory learning approaches, adoption of these instructional approaches has been slow.

The human genome contains numerous repetitive nucleotide sequences that display a propensity to fold into non-canonical DNA structures including G-quadruplexes (G4s). G4s have both positive and negative impacts on various aspects of nucleic acid metabolism including DNA replication, DNA repair and RNA transcription. Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP1), an important anticancer drug target, has been recently shown to bind a subset of G4s, and to undergo auto-PARylation.

Sterile alpha motif (SAM) and histidine-aspartate (HD) domain-containing protein 1 (SAMHD1) inhibits HIV-1 replication in non-dividing cells by reducing the intracellular dNTP pool. SAMHD1 enhances spontaneous apoptosis in cells, but its effects on HIV-1-induced apoptosis and the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. Here we uncover a new mechanism by which SAMHD1 enhances HIV-1-induced apoptosis in monocytic cells through the mitochondrial pathway.

Background: There is a lack of data on the role of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in patients who received percutaneous left ventricular assist devices (pLVAD) as mechanical circulatory support (MCS) as an adjunct treatment for cardiogenic shock (CS) management.
Methods: Using National Inpatient Sample (2016-19), we extracted CS patients receiving pLVAD and divided them into CKD and non-CKD cohorts. Multivariate regression analysis was used for adjusted odds ratios for outcomes before and after entropy balancing (EB) and predictive margins for the probability of all-cause in-hospital mortality (ACM).

Metabolic modeling is essential for understanding the mechanistic bases of cellular metabolism in various organisms, from microbes to humans, and the design of fitter microbial strains. Metabolic networks focus on the overall fluxes through biochemical reactions that implicitly rely on several biochemical processes, such as active or diffusive uptake (or export) of nutrients (or metabolites), enzymatic turnover of metabolites, and metal-cofactor enzyme interactions. Despite independent progress in biomolecular simulations, they have yet to be integrated to inform metabolic models.

SANS is unique to the space environment of microgravity and produces novel physiological and pathological findings that have no direct terrestrial equivalent. The neuro-ophthalmic phenomenon is a major physiologic barrier to future planetary spaceflight.
