Purpose: Meibomian gland disease is generally accepted as the leading cause for evaporative dry eye disease (DED). In a previous study, perfluorohexyloctane, a semifluorinated alkane, has been demonstrated to significantly increase tear film breakup time and to reduce corneal fluorescein staining in patients with evaporative DED, thereby vastly reducing dry eye-related symptoms. This study was set up to evaluate perfluorohexyloctane in a larger population of patients with Meibomian gland dysfunction.

Artificial iris implantation in various iris defects and lens conditions.

J Cataract Refract Surg

June 2017

From the Eye Clinic (Mayer, Hoffmann), Klinikum rechts der Isar der Technischen Universität München, Munich, and the David J. Apple International Laboratory for Ocular Pathology and International Vision Correction Research Centre (Tandogan, Khoramnia), Department of Ophthalmology, University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany. Electronic address:

We describe 6 surgical techniques used to implant a silicone iris prosthesis: sector-shaped iris segments that require suturing, injector-assisted sulcus fixation, injector-assisted capsular bag fixation with an intraocular lens (IOL) and capsular tension ring, folded iris tissue implanted with a forceps and sutured to the sclera with a scleral-fixated IOL, "sandwich" or "backpack" implantation with an IOL, and open-sky implantation with a perforating keratoplasty. The results of the techniques performed in 51 patients are discussed. Sector-shaped iris segments required longer surgery because of the complexity of intracameral sutures and carried risks for knots to loosen and sutures to cut through residual iris tissue.

In vitro optical quality measurements of three intraocular lens models having identical platform.

BMC Ophthalmol

June 2017

David J. Apple International Laboratory for Ocular Pathology and International Vision Correction Research Centre (IVCRC), Department of Ophthalmology, University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany.

Background: With recent advances in technology and introduction of new intraocular lens (IOL) models, surgeons today have the opportunity to choose from various optical designs, which can influence the postoperative quality of vision. In our laboratory study, we compared the optical quality of three different IOLs that use the identical platform and are produced by the same manufacturer. The study included two diffractive multifocal IOLs, a bifocal and a trifocal one, as well as a monofocal IOL.

Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate the contribution to outpatient care and the perspectives of employed and self-employed ophthalmologists in isolation and in comparison to other professional groups.

Method: Based on statistical data (source: statistical information provided by the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians) from 31 December 2015, newly admitted physicians in 2015 and their contribution differentiated by employment relationships were evaluated according to head count and working time equivalents (using "planning of demand equivalents"). The results were subdivided into type of outpatient facility, e.

To compare the visual outcomes after ReLEx SMILE treatment of eyes with low and high PTA values (PTA: percent tissue altered) within a follow-up period of up to 3 years and to assess whether a high PTA value might contribute to the development of keratectasia, as is the case for LASIK.   This retrospective analysis comprises results from 313 eyes (189 patients) with a PTA value of less than 40 % and of 373 eyes (213 patients) with a PTA value of at least 40 %. Preoperatively and up to 3 years after SMILE surgery, refraction values, monocular corrected (CDVA) and uncorrected distant visual acuity (UDVA) and wavefront data were evaluated.
