The BC-box motif in suppressor of cytokine signaling 6 (SOCS6) promotes the neuronal differentiation of somatic stem cells, including epidermal stem cells. SOCS6 protein belongs to the group of SOCS proteins and inhibits cytokine signaling. Here we showed that epidermal stem cells were induced to differentiate into GABAnergic neurons by the intracellular delivery of a peptide composed of the amino-acid sequences encoded by the BC-box motif in SOCS6 protein.

Aim: Liver biopsy is still required for the diagnosis of hepatocellular ballooning and inflammation, which are important histological features of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. We undertook this multicenter, cross-sectional study to identify novel blood markers for the diagnosis of hepatocellular ballooning.
Methods: We enrolled 176 patients, of whom 132 were proven by liver biopsy as having non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and classified as non-ballooning (ballooning grade 0) (n = 83) or ballooning (ballooning grade 1 and 2) (n = 49) by a central pathology review.

Radium-223 is used for treating castration-resistant prostate cancer with bone metastases. Here, we report the case of a 76-year-old man diagnosed with castration-resistant prostate cancer with bone metastases who was started on radium-223. Although the patient ultimately died from causes unrelated to the treatment before starting the third treatment course, we observed that radium-223 was more effective in areas closer to the bone cortex than in deeper tumor regions.

Introduction: Central nervous system hemangioblastoma is a benign tumor associated with or without von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease which is an autosomal dominant hereditary disease that results from a germline mutation in the VHL gene. A main axis of signaling pathways in central nervous system hemangioblastoma is VHL-HIF signaling pathway. Here, we propose an alternative VHL-JAK-STAT signaling pathway in hemangioblastoma and discuss the role.

Background: Wide-spectrum antibiotics have been favored to treat acute uncomplicated cystitis (AUC) for a long time, leading to the emergence of multi-drug resistant bacteria. We hypothesize that narrow-spectrum antibiotics might mitigate the issue and aim to investigate the clinical efficacy of cefaclor in patients with AUC.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical data of female outpatients with AUC treated with cefaclor and evaluated the safety and clinical efficacy.

Background: Pregnant and postpartum women with psychosocial problems are prone to face limited or absent perinatal functional support from biological grandmothers due to familial dysfunction. The study aimed to investigate whether the involvement and presence of biological maternal grandmothers providing practical support for their pre/postnatal daughters (ie, pregnant women) during the perinatal period may influence the number of support services provided by multidisciplinary agencies, including child consultation centers and municipal offices.
Participants And Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study based on the medical records of all pregnant women with psychosocial problems that visited, gave birth, and received intervention from the hospital-based child protection unit at the Chiba University Hospital between February 2018 to March 2019.

Gemcitabine (GEM) and cisplatin (CDDP) combination therapy (GC) is the standard chemotherapy for advanced biliary tract cancer (BTC); however, its pharmacotherapeutic efficacy remains unclear. To investigate the effects of GC, we selected 11 from 17 BTC cell lines, according to their GEM sensitivity, to be assessed using the MTS assay. The presence of synergistic effects of GC was determined using the Bliss additivism model (BM) and the combination index (CI) at a GEM:CDDP molar ratio of 7:1; this ratio was based on the respective human renal clearances of the two drugs.

Aim: We investigated the characteristics of serum autotaxin (ATX) and its diagnostic performance for liver fibrosis in a large cohort of patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
Methods: We compared the usefulness of ATX and other fibrosis markers in 307 biopsy-confirmed NAFLD patients. In addition, in 145 participants with NAFLD, we compared the diagnostic performance of ATX with that of non-invasive imaging methods (vibration-controlled transient elastography and magnetic resonance elastography [MRE]).

Aim: Although liver biopsy is the gold standard for the diagnosis and staging of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), repeated assessment of patients' liver tissue conditions are impractical. We assessed the 10-year changes in liver stiffness measurements (LSM) utilizing vibration-controlled transient elastography in NAFLD patients.
Methods: From January 2006 to September 2007, LSM was carried out for 97 biopsy-proven NAFLD patients.

Some experimental studies have shown that direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) have anti-inflammatory effects. However, the interval changes in inflammatory markers in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF) who receive DOACs remain unknown. Between July 2013 and April 2014, a total of 187 AF patients randomly assigned to receive rivaroxaban (n = 91) or dabigatran (n = 96) were assessed for eligibility.

Background And Aim: In the condition of high prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a new diagnostic algorithm to efficiently identify NAFLD patients with significant fibrosis is urgently required. We evaluated the predictive ability of the fibrosis-4 index (FIB-4 index) for significant liver fibrosis (F ≥ 2) in a cohort of Japanese patients with NAFLD.
Methods: We prospectively calculated the FIB-4 index in patients who were incidentally diagnosed as fatty liver in medical checkups and then conducted liver stiffness measurement by vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE) only in patients in whom the FIB-4 index was more than the low cut-off index (> 1.

Intermittent administration of human parathyroid hormone (1-34) (hPTH(1-34)) promotes anabolic action in bone by stimulating bone remodeling, while eldecalcitol, an analog of active vitamin D3, suppresses osteoclastic bone resorption, and forms new bone by minimodeling. We have examined the biological effects of combined administration of eldecalcitol and hPTH(1-34) on 9-week-old Wistar rats that underwent an ovariectomy (OVX) or Sham operation. They were divided into a Sham group, OVX with vehicle (OVX group), OVX with 10 µg/kg/day of hPTH(1-34) (PTH group), OVX with 20 ng/kg/day of eldecalcitol (eldecalcitol group) or OVX with 10 μg/kg/day of hPTH(1-34), and 20 ng/kg/day of eldecalcitol (combined group) for 4 or 8 weeks.

The progression of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is affected by epigenetics. We performed differentially methylated region (DMR) and co-methylation analyses to identify DMR networks associated with the progression of NAFLD. DMRs displaying differences in multiple consecutive differentially methylated CpGs between mild and advanced NAFLD were extracted.

Central nervous system hemangioblastomas are generally restricted to the cerebellum, spinal cord, and brainstem. Supratentorial hemangioblastomas are uncommon, and optic nerve hemangioblastomas are extremely rare, with fewer than 25 reports including this case. In this report, we present the case of a 36-year-old woman with von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease who presented with progressive diminution of vision in the left eye due to a retrobulbar optic nerve hemangioblastoma.

Nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) has rapidly expanded from classical features such as staring, repetitive blinking, chewing, swallowing, and automatism to include coma, prolonged apnea, cardiac arrest, dementia, and higher brain dysfunction, which were demonstrated mainly after the 2000s by us and other groups. This review details novel clinical features of NCSE as a manifestation of epilepsy, but one that is underdiagnosed, with the best available evidence. Also, we describe the new concept of epilepsy-related organ dysfunction (Epi-ROD) and a novel electrode and headset which enables prompt electroencephalography.
