Article Synopsis
  • This study explored how different work activities relate to chronic venous disease (CVD) in the lower limbs by evaluating patients referred for assessment from January 2019 to December 2023.
  • A total of 948 patients were analyzed, with 613 having CVD and the rest serving as control participants, indicating that sedentary jobs and those in hot environments increased the risk of developing CVD.
  • The study concluded that certain work conditions, like prolonged sitting or standing and exposure to high temperatures, can negatively impact venous health in the lower limbs, potentially leading to CVD progression.

: Biomarkers development for prognostication or prediction of perioperative myocardial disease is critical for the evolution of treatment options in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. The aim of our prospective monocentric study was to investigate the role of selenoprotein 1 (SEEP 1) as a potential biomarker for assessing the risk of myocardial injury after cardiac surgery. : Circulating SEPP1 was measured in the blood of 45 patients before surgery and at 4 h, 8 h and 12 h after CPB by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA); (3) : circulating SEPP-1 levels measured 4 h after surgery were strongly correlated with CK-MB levels measured at 48 h (R = 0.

Int J Mol Sci

January 2023

Interuniversity Center of Phlebolymphology (CIFL), International Research and Educational Program in Clinical and Experimental Biotechnology, University "Magna Graecia" of Catanzaro, 88100 Catanzaro, Italy.

Chronic Venous Disease (CVD) refers to several pathological and hemodynamic alterations of the veins of lower limbs causing a wide range of symptoms and signs with a high prevalence in the general population and with disabling consequences in the most severe forms. The etiology and pathophysiology of CVD is complex and multifactorial, involving genetic, proteomic, and cellular mechanisms that result in changes to the venous structure and functions. Expressions of several genes associated with angiogenesis, vascular development, and the regulation of veins are responsible for the susceptibility to CVD.

Diabetic nephropathy is the most common cause of end-stage renal disease worldwide. Control of blood glucose and blood pressure (BP) reduces the risk of developing this complication, but once diabetic nephropathy is established, it is then only possible to slow its progression. Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) are a novel class of oral hypoglycemic agents that increase urinary glucose excretion by suppressing glucose reabsorption at the renal proximal tubule.
