Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the change in adult critical care bed capacity in Asian countries, comparing data from 2017 to 2022, highlighting its importance during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Results showed a significant increase in the number of critical care beds per 100,000 population, rising from 3.0 in 2017 to 9.4 in 2022, with notable improvements in middle-income countries.
  • Despite the overall increase, only 3 countries did not enhance their capacity, and variability was observed, especially between middle and high-income economies regarding room specifications for critical care beds.

Epidemiology, Management, and Outcomes of Sepsis in ICUs among Countries of Differing National Wealth across Asia.

Am J Respir Crit Care Med

November 2022

Division of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Department of Medicine, National University Hospital, National University Health System, Singapore, Singapore.

Article Synopsis
  • A study examined sepsis prevalence and treatment practices in adult ICUs across 22 Asian countries with varying income levels, revealing an overall sepsis prevalence of 22.4%.
  • The study found that patients in low-income and lower-middle-income regions tended to be younger and less severely ill but experienced higher hospital mortality rates (32.6%) compared to those in high-income countries.
  • Compliance with sepsis treatment protocols (the sepsis bundle) was low, particularly the timely administration of antibiotics, which when delayed beyond 3 hours, significantly increased the risk of mortality.

Background: Appendicitis is common and delayed presentation results in complicated appendicitis with increased morbidity. This study investigates the effect of the Movement Control Order (MCO) during the COVID-19 pandemic on the presentation and severity of appendicitis.

Methods: A cross-sectional study including 193 patients diagnosed with appendicitis was conducted at four hospitals in Pahang, Malaysia.

Sialolithiasis is one of the most common diseases involving the salivary glands. It is a condition that occurs due to an obstruction in a salivary gland or its duct due to a calculus. The formation of a salivary stone is believed to be secondary to the deposition of mineral salts around a nidus, which is frequently associated with a recurrent bacterial infection.

Introduction: The prevalence of knee osteoarthritis is on the raise. This raise has been a huge financial burden to developed countries in treating the disease. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a cost-effective, easily available, and self-applicable mode of non-pharmacological pain relieve technique.

Introduction: Approach to managing infection in the intensive care unit (ICU) often varies between institutions and not many readily adapt to available local guidelines despite it was constructed to suite local clinical scenario. Malaysia already has two published guidelines on managing infection in the ICU but data on its compliance are largely unknown.

Objectives: A cross-sectional survey was carried out and sent to a total of 868 specialists working primarily in the ICU.

Background And Objective: Mechanical ventilation therapy of respiratory failure patients can be guided by monitoring patient-specific respiratory mechanics. However, the patient's spontaneous breathing effort during controlled ventilation changes airway pressure waveform and thus affects the model-based identification of patient-specific respiratory mechanics parameters. This study develops a model to estimate respiratory mechanics in the presence of patient effort.

Introduction: The presence of significant pain and swelling during the acute stage following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) may limit the patients' ability to cooperate in intensive physiotherapy interventions. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound is one of the modalities that can be used for acute pain and swelling management. However, only one study investigated the effect of this modality in patients with TKA.

Background And Objective: Respiratory mechanics estimation can be used to guide mechanical ventilation (MV) but is severely compromised when asynchronous breathing occurs. In addition, asynchrony during MV is often not monitored and little is known about the impact or magnitude of asynchronous breathing towards recovery. Thus, it is important to monitor and quantify asynchronous breathing over every breath in an automated fashion, enabling the ability to overcome the limitations of model-based respiratory mechanics estimation during asynchronous breathing ventilation.
