Article Synopsis
  • Glycemic variability (GV) significantly increases the risk of complications in diabetic patients, especially those with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) on hemodialysis, but research on this specific group is limited.
  • The study included 150 hemodialysis patients, comparing 93 with type 2 diabetes to 57 nondiabetic patients, revealing that diabetic patients had much higher mean blood glucose levels and poorer GV indices on hemodialysis days.
  • Factors such as higher HbA1c levels, older age, and hyperlipidemia were linked to increased GV, indicating a need for urgent interventions in diabetic ESKD patients to reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications.

Int J Speech Lang Pathol

April 2022

Communication Sciences and Disorders, College of Health and Human Services, Rockhurst University, Kansas City, MO, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the practices of Malaysian speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in managing patients with dysarthria, identifying their challenges and potential strategies for improvement.
  • Two studies were carried out: the first involved a survey of SLPs regarding their practices, while the second consisted of in-depth interviews with a smaller group of SLPs to gather qualitative insights.
  • Key findings revealed that most SLPs relied on impairment-based approaches and that those not using standardized assessment tools felt less confident in their dysarthria knowledge, highlighting a need for improved education and training in the field.

Macrolactin A as a Novel Inhibitory Agent for SARS-CoV-2 M: Bioinformatics Approach.

Appl Biochem Biotechnol

October 2021

Research Divisions, Association for Biodiversity Conservation and Research, Balasore, Odisha, 756001, India.

COVID-19 is a disease that puts most of the world on lockdown and the search for therapeutic drugs is still ongoing. Therefore, this study used in silico screening to identify natural bioactive compounds from fruits, herbaceous plants, and marine invertebrates that are able to inhibit protease activity in SARS-CoV-2 (PDB: 6LU7). We have used extensive screening strategies such as drug likeliness, antiviral activity value prediction, molecular docking, ADME, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, and MM/GBSA.

This study tests for the first time the validity of universality and normativity assumptions related to the attachment theory in a non-Western culture, using a novel design including psychiatric and non-psychiatric samples as part of a comprehensive exploratory and advanced confirmatory framework. Three attachment assessments were distributed to 212 psychiatric outpatients and 300 non-psychiatric samples in Yemen. The results of the fourteen approaches of exploratory factor analysis (EFA) produce a similar result and assertion that the psychiatric outpatients tend to explore attachment outcomes based on multi-methods, while the non-psychiatric samples suggest an attachment orientation based on multi-traits (self-other).

Leukemia is a leukocyte cancer that is characterized by anarchic growth of immature immune cells in the bone marrow, blood and spleen. There are many forms of leukemia, and the best course of therapy and the chance of a patient's survival depend on the type of leukemic disease. Different forms of drugs have been used to treat leukemia.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) in which activated immune cells attack the CNS and cause inflammation and demyelination. While the etiology of MS is still largely unknown, the interaction between hormones and the immune system plays a role in disease progression, but the mechanisms by which this occurs are incompletely understood. Several and experimental, but also clinical studies, have addressed the possible role of the endocrine system in susceptibility and severity of autoimmune diseases.

Increased scientific interest has led to the rise in biotechnological uses of halophilic and halotolerant microbes for hypersaline wastewater bioremediation. Hence, this study performed molecular docking, molecular dynamic (MD) simulations, and validation by Molecular Mechanic Poisson-Boltzmann Surface Area (MM-PBSA) calculations on the DehH2 from H2. We aimed to identify the interactions of DehH2 with substrates haloacids, haloacetates, and chlorpyrifos under extreme salinity (35% NaCl).

Multiple infections of several bacterial species are often observed under natural farm conditions. The infections would cause a much more significant loss compared to a single infectious agent. Vaccination is an essential strategy to prevent diseases in aquaculture, and oral vaccination has been proposed as a promising technique since it requires no handling of the fish and is easy to perform.

Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivors require attention and dependence from their primary caregiver. This is because TBI is a defect that affects both the psychological and physical functions of the victim. Caregivers play an essential role in providing the adequate care victims need to adjust to the new problems they may experience due to their condition, as family members alone may not be able to provide for their needs.

Influences of environmental parameters and phytoplankton productivity on benthic invertebrates in a tropical oligotrophic lake, northern Malaysia.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

August 2021

Department of Marine Science, Faculty of Science, IIUM, Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, 25200, Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia.

Studies that associate environmental parameters with aquatic organisms in man-made lakes remain limited by accessibility and interest particularly in many Asian countries. With missed opportunities to monitor environmental transitions at Lake Kenyir, our knowledge of lake transition is restricted to the non-mixing shallow waters only. Triplicate monthly benthic invertebrate samples were collected concurrently with various environmental parameters at three locations (zones A-C) of Kenyir Lake, Malaysia.

Introduction: Non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs), such as dabigatran and rivaroxaban, are now available for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and are often clinically preferred over vitamin K antagonists (VKAs), such as warfarin. Data describing adherence and persistence to NOACs in real-life clinical practice in Malaysia are scarce. This study aimed to assess adherence and persistence to NOACs in patients with AF in two tertiary-care referral centers: Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) and Hospital Serdang (HSDG).

Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Kulliyyah of Pharmacy, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Kuantan, Malaysia.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of different seed extracts at various doses using a method called Soxhlet extraction with n-hexane, chloroform, and methanol.
  • Wistar rats were tested with varying doses of the extracts to measure their anti-inflammatory activity, with a standard drug (diclofenac sodium) used as a comparison.
  • Results showed that the n-hexane extract had the strongest anti-inflammatory effect, while all tested extracts worked by enhancing GABA neurotransmission and suppressing glutamate receptors.

Introduction: Practice of dispensing paracetamol (PCM) in post infants' vaccination remains debatable in Malaysia as the administration of PCM postvaccination in infants was found to cause the vaccine to be less effective, thus requiring appropriate regulation measures.

Objective: This research aimed to investigate the prevalence of adverse events following immunization (AEFI) with/without PCM to be prescribed post infants' vaccination in Malaysia (possible associated factors: age, types and stages of vaccination, concomitant vaccines and drugs, and/vitamins).

Materials And Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted from 2011 to 2017.
