Laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the acute toxicity of a widely used textile dye namely Reactive Red 120 (RR 120) on certain aquatic species such as Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (green alga), Lemna gibba (duck weed), Daphnia magna (water flea) and Oncorhynchus mykiss (Rainbow trout). All experiments were performed as per the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals. The toxicity end points of EC50, LC50, NOEC and LOEC for RR 120 were determined with 95% confidence limits using TOX STAT version 3.

We have investigated the time-dependent effect of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in rats upon single inhalation exposure followed by intermittent sacrifice. The effects were monitored by analyzing the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and histopathological analysis. Cell count, neutrophils, lymphocytes, lactate dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, protein and cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin 4 (IL-4)) were significantly increased, while cell viability and alveolar macrophage count significantly decreased in the BALF of MWCNT-treated rats on day 1, day 7 and day 14 post-exposure, when compared to control rats.

Male CD1 mice were subjected to nose-inhalation exposure of CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) for 0, 7, 14 or 28 days with 14 or 28 days of recovery time at an aerosol concentration of 2 mg/m(3). Markers of lung injury and pro-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin-1beta, tumour necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6 and macrophage inflammatory protein-2) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), oxidative stress in lungs, bio-accumulation, and histopathology of pulmonary and extrapulmonary tissues were assessed. BALF analysis revealed the induction of pulmonary inflammation, as evident by an increase in the influx of neutrophils with a significant secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines that lead to generation of oxidative stress and cytotoxicity, as is evident by induction of lipid peroxidation, depletion of glutathione and increased BALF lactate dehydrogenase and protein.

In order to investigate the effect of expired pesticides on the yield and growth rate of green algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, a study was conducted as per the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) guideline number 201. Fifteen expired pesticide formulations, most commonly used in Indian agriculture, were tested in comparison with their unexpired counterparts. The expired pesticide formulations studied belonged to various class and functional groups: organophosphate, pyrethroid-based insecticides; azole-based fungicides; acetamide, propionate, acetic acid-based herbicides; fungicides mixtures containing two actives-azole and dithiocarbamate.

The aim of the present study was to assess the acute toxic potential of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO(2) NPs) in rats when exposed through the head and nose inhalation route. The rats were exposed to CeO(2) NPs and the resultant effects if any, to cause cytotoxicity, oxidative stress and inflammation in the lungs were evaluated on a 24h, 48h and 14 day post exposure period. As an alternative to the standard Draize eye irritation test, the potential irritancy of compounds was evaluated by observing adverse changes that occur in chorioallantoic membrane CAM) of the hen egg (HECAM) after exposure to a test chemical placed directly on the CAM. The occurrence of hemorrhage, coagulation, and lysis in response to a test compound is the basis for employing this technique to evaluate its potential for in vivo damage to mucous membrane, in particular the eye. A new rapid and sensitive electron ionization gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method in selective ion monitoring mode (SIM) was developed for the determination of l3 synthetic pyrethroid insecticide molecules and their stereo isomers in whole blood. The pyrethroid insecticides investigated are allethrin, bifenthrin, cypermethrin, cyphonothrin, cyfluthrin, lambda-cyhalothrin, deltamethrin, fenvalerate, fenpropathrin, imiprothrin, permethrin, prallethrin and transfluthrin. The residues of pyrethroids are extracted from the whole blood using hexane and acetone mixture (80 + 20%) as solvent.
