This work reports the incorporation of coordinated water into Ni-BTC nanorods (Ni-BTC-O) which induces their structural transformation to Ni-BTC nanofibres (Ni-BTC-F). The carbonization of the Ni-BTC nanofibres at 600 °C results in the formation of carbon nanotube (CNT)-decorated hierarchical porous nickel/carbon hybrid (labelled as Ni/C-600) with enlarged pores. In contrast, the Ni/C hybrid obtained from the carbonization of the original (unmodified) Ni-BTC nanorods (Ni-BTC-O) at 600 °C (labelled as Ni-BTC-O-600) exhibits smaller pore size and does not show the formation of CNTs.

Alkyl-π functional molecular liquids (FMLs) are of interest for fabricating soft electronic devices due to their fluidic nature and innate optoelectronic functions from the π-conjugated moiety. However, predictable development of alkyl-π FMLs with the desired liquid and optoelectronic properties is challenging. A series of alkyl-distyrylbenzene (DSB) liquids was studied in terms of the substituent position effect by attaching 2-octyldodecyl chains at (2,4-), (2,5-), (2,6-), and (3,5-).

The crystallographic and transport properties of thin films fabricated by pulsed laser deposition and belonging to the Sm(FeNi)Sbfilled skutterudite system were studied with the aim to unveil the effect exerted by temperature and duration of thermal treatments on structural and thermoelectric features. The importance of annealing treatments in Ar atmosphere up to 523 K was recognized, and the thermal treatment performed at 473 K for 3 h was selected as the most effective in improving the material properties. With respect to the corresponding bulk compositions, a significant enhancement in phase purity, as well as an increase in electrical conductivity and a drop in room temperature thermal conductivity, were observed in annealed films.

Logic-in-memory (LIM) has emerged as an energy-efficient computing technology, as it integrates logic and memory operations in a single device architecture. Herein, a concept of ternary LIM is established. First, a p-type 2,7-dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-][1]benzothiophene (C8-BTBT) transistor is combined with an n-type PhCH-benzo[de]isoquinolino[1,8-gh]quinolone diimide (PhC2-BQQDI) transistor to obtain a binary memory inverter, in which a zinc phthalocyanine-cored polystyrene (ZnPc-PS) layer serves as a floating gate.

Physical reservoir computing has recently been attracting attention for its ability to substantially reduce the computational resources required to process time series data. However, the physical reservoirs that have been reported to date have had insufficient computational capacity, and most of them have a large volume, which makes their practical application difficult. Here, we describe the development of a Li electrolyte-based ion-gating reservoir (IGR), with ion-electron-coupled dynamics, for use in high-performance physical reservoir computing.

The electrical double-layer supercapacitance performance of the nanoporous carbons prepared from the (Amala) seed by chemical activation using the potassium hydroxide (KOH) activator is reported. KOH activation was carried out at different temperatures (700-1000 °C) under nitrogen gas atmosphere, and in a three-electrode cell set-up the electrochemical measurements were performed in an aqueous 1 M sulfuric acid (HSO) solution. Because of the hierarchical pore structures with well-defined micro- and mesopores, seed-derived carbon materials exhibit high specific surface areas in the range of 1360 to 1946 m g, and the total pore volumes range from 0.

Perovskite-type ABO oxides show a number of cation-ordered structures, which have significant effects on their properties. The rock-salt-type order is dominant for B cations, and the layered order for A cations. In this work, we prepared a new perovskite-type oxide, SmCuMn(MnTi)O, with a rare columnar A-site order using a high-pressure, high-temperature method at about 6 GPa and about 1700 K.

Direct photocatalytic oxidation of methane to liquid oxygenated products is a sustainable strategy for methane valorization at room temperature. However, in this reaction, noble metals are generally needed to function as cocatalysts for obtaining adequate activity and selectivity. Here, we report atomically dispersed nickel anchored on a nitrogen-doped carbon/TiO composite (Ni-NC/TiO ) as a highly active and selective catalyst for photooxidation of CH to C1 oxygenates with O as the only oxidant.

Although vital pulp therapy should be performed by promoting the wound-healing capacity of dental pulp, existing pulp-capping materials were not developed with a focus on the pulpal repair process. In previous investigations of wound healing in dental pulp, we found that organic dentin matrix components (DMCs) were degraded by matrix metalloproteinase-20, and DMC degradation products containing protein S100A7 (S100A7) and protein S100A8 (S100A8) promoted the pulpal wound-healing process. However, the direct use of recombinant proteins as pulp-capping materials may cause clinical problems or lead to high medical costs.

Automatic differentiation (AD) has become an important tool for optimization problems in computational science, and it has been applied to the Hartree-Fock method. Although the reverse-mode AD is more efficient than the forward-mode, eigenvalue calculation in the self-consistent field (SCF) method has impeded the use of the reverse-mode AD. Here, we propose a method to directly minimize Hartree-Fock energy under the orthonormality constraint of the molecular orbitals using reverse-mode AD by avoiding eigenvalue calculation.

Although widely used as hybrid capacitive deionization (HCDI) electrode material, the low intrinsic conductivity of metal hexacyanometalate (MHCF) severely hinders the fast insertion/extraction of Na in/from its 3D framework structure, damaging its desalination performance. Herein, we design a carbon nanotube (CNT) bridged nickel hexacyanoferrate architecture (NiHCF). The highly conductive CNT not only acts as the skeleton for the uniform growth of NiHCF to provide more ion-accessible surface and active sites but also serves as the conductive bridge to connect the NiHCF particles, which prevents the agglomeration of NiHCF particles and facilitates the charge transfer and ion diffusion during the desalination process.

Anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) with high conductivity are crucial for realizing next-generation energy storage and conversion systems in an alkaline environment, promising a huge advantage in cost reduction without using precious platinum group metal catalysts. Layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets, exhibiting a remarkably high hydroxide ion (OH) conductivity approaching 10 S cm along the in-plane direction, may be regarded as an ideal candidate material for the fabrication of inorganic solid AEMs. However, two-dimensional anisotropy results in a substantially low conductivity of 10 S cm along the cross-plane direction, which poses a hurdle to achieve fast ion conduction across the membrane comprising restacked nanosheets.

In this study, we present microporous carbon (MPC), hollow microporous carbon (HMC) and hierarchically porous carbon (HPC) to demonstrate the importance of strategical designing of nanoarchitectures in achieving advanced catalyst (or electrode) materials, especially in the context of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Based on the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and ORR studies, we identify a marked structural effect depending on the porosity. Specifically, mesopores are found to have the most profound influence by significantly improving electrochemical wettability and accessibility.
