Article Synopsis
  • Acute myocarditis cases in kids are increasing in Italy, with 65 suspected cases reported in 2024, largely linked to parvovirus B19 infection.
  • Among these cases, 29 children needed intensive care and there were eight fatalities, emphasizing the severity of the situation.
  • The study suggests a need for better diagnosis, enhanced monitoring, and standardized treatment strategies, as only about one-third of affected children received effective intravenous immunoglobulins.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at how serious Human Adenovirus (HAdV) infections are compared to other viral illnesses in kids with breathing problems in Italy.
  • They found that kids with HAdV showed more inflammation but didn't have worse breathing issues than those with other viruses.
  • The research highlights the need to identify HAdV early to avoid giving unnecessary antibiotics, since many kids might get treated for bacterial infections when they really have a virus.

Background Evidence suggests that risk genotypes are a possible contributor to the clinical diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). This study aimed at determining the prevalence of risk variants in adult individuals with FH enrolled in the Italian LIPIGEN (Lipid Transport Disorders Italian Genetic Network) study, with (FH/M+) or without (FH/M-) a causative genetic variant. Methods and Results An lp(a) [lipoprotein(a)] genetic score was calculated by summing the number risk-increasing alleles inherited at rs3798220 and rs10455872 variants.

Introduction: Eosinophilic cystitis is a rare condition which causes common symptoms and may mimic other conditions. Eosinophilic cystitis has several causes such as hypereosinophilic syndrome, inflammatory diseases, neoplasia, parasites or fungal infection, IgE-related diseases, Drug Reaction and Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) syndrome, or Churg-Strauss syndrome. Therefore, differential diagnosis is difficult.

(1) Background: Developing strategies to identify significant liver fibrosis in people with HIV (PWH) is crucial to prevent complications of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We aim to investigate if five simple serum biomarkers applied to PWH can optimize a care pathway to identify significant liver fibrosis defined by transient elastography (TE). (2) Methods: A two-tier fibrosis pathway was applied to three prospective cohorts of PWH undergoing TE with CAP.

Zoonotic Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens infection in humans and an integrative approach to the diagnosis.

Acta Trop

November 2021

Department of Veterinary Medicine, University of Bari, Valenzano, Italy; Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, Bu-Ali Sina University, Hamedan, Iran. Electronic address:

Dirofilariosis by Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens is endemic in dogs from countries of the Mediterranean basin. Both species may infect humans, with most of the infected patients remaining asymptomatic. Based on the recent description of the southernmost hyperendemic European focus of heartworm disease in dogs from the Pelagie archipelagos, we performed a serological and molecular survey in human population of that area.

Article Synopsis
  • Hyperalphalipoproteinemia (HALP) is a lipid disorder marked by very high levels of HDL cholesterol, often caused by genetic mutations or secondary factors like drugs and lifestyle changes.
  • While traditionally viewed as protective against cardiovascular diseases, recent studies challenge the idea that high HDL-C levels directly reduce heart disease risk.
  • The review explores primary HALP types, the influence of genetic factors on HDL-C levels, associated cardiovascular risks, and potential treatment options.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluates trends in antibiotic resistance among hospitalized patients with blood infections in intensive care units (ICUs) across 24 countries with various income levels, focusing on multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) such as Klebsiella pneumoniae and Acinetobacter baumannii.
  • - Results show that 65.1% of the isolates were multidrug-resistant (MDR) and 4.9% were extensively drug-resistant (XDR), with the highest rates found in upper-middle-income and lower-middle-income countries, while no pan-drug-resistant strains were detected.
  • - The study identifies key predictors for acquiring MDR and XDR infections, particularly highlighting the need for improved antibiotic stewardship in community settings and ICUs,

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the most important risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Despite the kidney having no direct implications for lipoproteins metabolism, advanced CKD dyslipidemia is usually present in patients with CKD, and the frequent lipid and lipoprotein alterations occurring in these patients play a role of primary importance in the development of CVD. Although hypertriglyceridemia is the main disorder, a number of lipoprotein abnormalities occur in these patients.

Ann Ig

August 2021

Department of Biomedical Sciences for Health, University of Milan, ASST Fatebenefratelli - Sacco, Milan, Italy.

Introduction: Despite continuing efforts, compliance rates and knowledge of best practices in hand hygiene remain disappointing. Recognizing that conventional educational tools seem out of touch with young people and that the med and messages contents need refreshing, the Italian Study Group of Hospital Hygiene of the Italian Society of Hygiene, Preventive Medicine and Public Health devised a novel approach to promote the creation of innovative educational tools for improving knowledge of, and compliance with, hand hygiene rules among healthcare and medical students.

Methods: A contest in creating educational material on hand hygiene practices involved university students of nursing and medicine, and of other healthcare degrees.

Background Current literature only reports variable information from single-center studies on the recurrence rate, the complications, and the outcome of patients with Takotsubo syndrome ( TTS) experiencing recurrent TTS . Therefore, a detailed description of clinical characteristics, predictors, and the prognostic impact of patients with TTS and recurrences in a multicenter registry is needed. Methods and Results We analyzed 749 patients with TTS from 9 European centers being part of the international, multicenter GEIST (German Italian Stress Cardiomyopathy) Registry.

Should low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) be treated?

Best Pract Res Clin Endocrinol Metab

June 2014

Nephrology and Hypertension, Medical University of Lodz, Zeromskiego 113, 90-549 Lodz, Poland. Electronic address:

The first observations linking a low serum level of HDL-C to increased risk for cardiovascular disease were made over 50 years ago. High serum levels of HDL-C appear to protect against the development of atherosclerotic disease, while low serum levels of this lipoprotein are among the most important predictors of atherosclerotic disease in both men and women and people of all racial and ethnic groups throughout the world. It has long been assumed that therapeutic interventions targeted at raising HDL-C levels would lower risk for such cardiovascular events as myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and death.
