Objective: To investigate phenotypes of comorbidity before and after an epilepsy diagnosis in a national cohort of post-9/11 Service Members and Veterans and explore phenotypic associations with mortality.
Methods: Among a longitudinal cohort of Service Members and Veterans receiving care in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) from 2002 to 2018, annual diagnoses for 26 conditions associated with epilepsy were collected over 5 years, ranging from 2 years prior to 2 years after the year of first epilepsy diagnosis. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify probabilistic comorbidity phenotypes with distinct health trajectories.

Resistance to antiretroviral therapy is an increasing challenge in the management of HIV. We present the case of a woman living with HIV, with a history of multiple treatment regimens and resistances to antiretrovirals, who has been successfully treated with a combination of lenacapavir and fostemsavir for the past year, obtaining an undetectable viral load within one month of starting therapy and reporting no serious side effects. This case is amongst the first to document the combined use of lenacapivir and fostemsavir in treating multidrug-resistant HIV.

Objectives: Diabetes prevalence has increased markedly in Mexico. We examined the individual and joint contributions of economic disadvantage during childhood (EDDC) and elevated body weight on diabetes prevalence in 3 cohorts of Mexican adults.
Methods: Data on those 60-69 years old from the 1930-1939, 1940-1949, and 1950-1959 birth cohorts in Waves 1 (2001), 3 (2012), and 5 (2018) of the Mexican Health and Aging Study were used.

Introduction: Smoking remains a significant global public health issue, leading to numerous preventable deaths and disabilities annually. Telephone counselling is a recommended intervention for smoking cessation, offering accessible support to a wide range of people who smoke. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of the German quitline for smoking cessation.

Background/aim: The genetic polymorphism of haptoglobin (Hp) has been associated with several cardiovascular risk factors, but a possible relationship between Hp phenotypic variation and increased levels of homocysteine (Hcy) and cysteine (Cy) is still unknown. The objective of this study is to evaluate the relationship between the Hp polymorphism and hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) and hypercysteinemia (HCy) in type 2 diabetics (T2D) with and without angiopathy (AGP).
Methods: A case-control study was carried out on 293 adults: Group I (GI) - 75 subjects with T2D and AGP; Group II (GII) - 75 subjects with T2D without AGP; Group III (GIII) - 143 controls.

Constructing tissue/organ analogs with natural structures and cell types in vitro offers a valuable strategy for the in situ repair of damaged tissues/organs. Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting is a flexible method for fabricating these analogs. However, extrusion-based 3D bioprinting faces the challenge of balancing the use of soft bioinks with the need for high-fidelity geometric shapes.

Background: Simulation training provides safe environment for skill acquisition and retention. This study addresses a critical challenge in Africa - umbilical cord and placenta management after childbirth - aiming to bridge theoretical learning with practical experiences through simulation. We realized a new low-cost high-fidelity simulator of placenta and umbilical cord.

Prostate is a zinc rich organ and the physiological function of the abundant zinc ions is relatively less understood. AKT kinase is a pivotal regulator downstream of cytokines, growth factors and other extracellular stimuli, and the attachment of its PH domain to PtdIns-3,4,5-P3 (PIP3) and the subsequent phosphorylation of its kinase domain by PDPK1 are considered important for its activation. Herein, we report a regulatory mechanism of AKT kinase by zinc ions.

Circadian rhythmicity of gene expression is a conserved feature of cell physiology. This involves fine-tuning between transcriptional and post-transcriptional mechanisms and strongly depends on the metabolic state of the cell. Together these processes guarantee an adaptive plasticity of tissue-specific genetic programs.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major cause of cancer-related death worldwide and an effective screening strategy for diagnosis of early-stage CRC is highly desired. Although extracellular vesicles (EVs) are expected to become some of the most promising tools for liquid biopsy of early disease diagnosis, the existing EV-based proteomics methods for practical application in clinical samples are limited by technical challenges in high-throughput isolation and detection of EVs. In the current study, we have developed a simplified and efficient EV-based proteomics strategy for early diagnosis of CRC.
