Being a university student is a vulnerable period marked by transitions and uncertainties which can impair their physical and mental well-being as well as overall quality of life. The existing literature suggests that certain groups of students might be particularly affected by that. In addition, quality of life might have been further affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: Propensity score matching has become a popular method for estimating causal treatment effects in non-randomized studies. However, for time-to-event outcomes, the estimation of hazard ratios based on propensity scores can be challenging if omitted or unobserved covariates are present. Not accounting for such covariates could lead to treatment estimates, differing from the estimate of interest.

Aim was to investigate to what extent cognitive functioning differs by three socioeconomic conditions: low income, being without employment, and living alone. A total of N = 158,144 participants of the population-based German National Cohort (NAKO) provided data on socioeconomic conditions and completed cognitive tests. Multivariable confounder-adjusted regression analyses indicated that cognitive functioning was lower in those with low income (b = -0.

Cardiac amyloidosis, encompassing both transthyretin (ATTR) and light-chain (AL) types, poses considerable challenges in patient management due to its intricate pathophysiology and progressive course. This narrative review elucidates the pivotal role of cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) in the assessment of these patients. CPET is essential for evaluating disease progression by measuring cardio-respiratory performance and providing prognostic insights.

Evaluating diagnostic test accuracy during epidemics is difficult due to an urgent need for test availability, changing disease prevalence and pathogen characteristics, and constantly evolving testing aims and applications. Based on lessons learned during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, we introduce a framework for rapid diagnostic test development, evaluation, and validation during outbreaks of emerging infections. The framework is based on the feedback loop between test accuracy evaluation, modelling studies for public health decision-making, and impact of public health interventions.

Background: As the burden of cardiovascular disease grows, so does the number of cardiac surgeries. Surgery is increasingly performed on older people with comorbidities who are at higher risk of developing perioperative complications such as low cardiac output state (LCOS). Surgery-associated LCOS represents a serious pathology responsible for substantial morbidity and mortality.

the timely and effective management of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is crucial to improve patient outcomes. 'Self-Referral' is defined as instances either where patients arrive at the hospital by their own means or are transported by someone else, rather than through professional emergency medical services. This approach can lead to treatment delays and potentially worsen outcomes.

Background: Obesity's negative impact on young people's health has long been known. The family and its socioeconomic position (SEP) are key determinants in adolescent obesity. However, understanding which familial determinants explain the association remains limited.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common genetic heart disease, affecting 1:200 to 1:500 individuals worldwide. Guidelines on the diagnosis and management of HCM have been recently published by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and American societies. The ESC guidelines cover a broad range of cardiomyopathies, including HCM, with 119 recommendations, whereas the American guidelines focus exclusively on HCM with 141 specific recommendations.

Transcatheter treatments for structural heart disease, including edge-to-edge mitral valve repair (mTEER), heavily rely on transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) for pre-procedural assessment and guidance. Trans-septal puncture (TSP) is one of the first key steps of such procedures, with two-dimensional (2D) TOE often providing suboptimal imaging. Three-dimensional (3D) echocardiography could overcome the limitations of 2D TOE and improve the assessment of tenting height.

The advanced lung cancer inflammation index (ALI) is an independent prognostic biomarker used to assess inflammation and nutritional status in various cancers, heart failure, and acute coronary syndromes. This study investigates the prognostic significance of ALI in patients experiencing ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI), comparing its predictive abilities with the established Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR). We conducted a retrospective analysis of 1171 patients from the Matrix Registry, encompassing demographic and clinical data for STEMI cases treated with pPCI, and ALI was determined using the formula [serum albumin (g/dL) × body mass index (kg/m)]/NLR at the time of hospital admission.

In acute myocardial infarction (AMI), the urgency of coronary revascularization through percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is paramount, offering notable advantages over pharmacologic treatment. However, the persistent risk of adverse events, including recurrent AMI and heart failure post-revascularization, underscores the necessity for enhanced strategies in managing coronary artery disease. Traditional angiography, while widely employed, presents significant limitations by providing only two-dimensional representations of complex three-dimensional vascular structures, hampering the accurate assessment of plaque characteristics and stenosis severity.

We propose a parametric model for describing chronic disease mortality from cohort data and illustrate its use for Type 2 diabetes. The model uses ideas from accelerated life testing in reliability theory and conceptualizes the occurrence of a chronic disease as putting the observational unit to an enhanced stress level, which is supposed to shorten its lifetime. It further addresses the issue of semi-competing risk, that is, the asymmetry of death and diagnosis of disease, where the disease can be diagnosed before death, but not after.

Providing timely and satisficing End-of-Life care (EOLC) is a priority for healthcare systems since aging population and chronic diseases are boosting the global demand for care at end-of-life (EOL). In OECD countries the access to EOLC is insufficient. In Italy, the average rate of cancer patients assisted by the palliative care (PC) network at EOL was 28% in 2021, with high variability in the country.

The WHO emphasizes the importance of taking area-level factors into account when formulating public health interventions. The aim of this systematic review was to identify which area-level factors are associated with children's dental caries in Europe and might therefore be a suitable starting point for public health interventions. We conducted a systematic review based on a search in PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library including all European studies on caries in children and their area-level factors published since the year 2000 in English or German.

Introduction: Data on the mental health of university students in Germany during the later stages of the pandemic is still limited. This study aimed to determine (1) the prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptoms among university students 1.5 years after the first COVID-19 restrictions and (2) which factors were associated with these outcomes.

Background: Juvenile sudden cardiac death (SCD) remains unexplained in approximately 40% of cases, leading to a significant emotional burden for the victims' families and society. Comprehensive investigations are essential to uncover its elusive causes and enable cascade family screening. This study aimed to enhance the identification of likely causative variants in juvenile SCD cases (age ≤ 50 years), particularly when autopsy findings are inconclusive.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges, particularly for vulnerable populations residing in confined settings such as refugee shelters: Physical distancing measures were challenging to implement in shelters due to shared rooms or communal use of kitchens and sanitary facilities, which increased the risk of infections. Meanwhile, individuals' capabilities for individual protection strategies were severely impaired by the structure of the shelters. Consequently, shelters had the duty to develop and implement strategies for the prevention and handling of SARS-CoV-2 infections.
