Innate immune cells show enhanced responsiveness to secondary challenges after an initial non-related stimulation (Trained Innate Immunity, TII). Acute NOD2 activation by Muramyl-Dipeptide (MDP) promotes TII inducing the secretion of pro-inflammatory mediators, while a sustained MDP-stimulation down-regulates the inflammatory response, restoring tolerance. Here we characterized in-vitro the response of murine macrophages to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge under NOD2-chronic stimulation.

J Intensive Med

January 2024

Department of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium.

Article Synopsis
  • The classification system for intra-abdominal infections categorizes patients based on infection onset, peritonitis type, and disease severity, and has shown effective risk stratification in ICU settings.
  • A study focusing on 165 ICU patients with pancreatic infections found a mortality rate of 35.2%, with older age, localized peritonitis, and persistent inflammation as key risk factors.
  • Ultimately, the research indicates that ongoing inflammation and complications in managing pancreatic infections are critical for predicting short-term patient outcomes.

Background: According to the emotion regulation process, situation selection comprises actions that increase or decrease the likelihood of being in contexts that foster a certain type of emotion, positive or negative. This concept is complemented by the social basis theory, which starts with the assumption that the primary ecology of humans is characterized by its social components. Thus, reduced access to social relationships increases cognitive and physiological effort, which leads to a decrease in well-being.

Poor timing and failure of source control are risk factors for mortality in critically ill patients with secondary peritonitis.

Intensive Care Med

November 2022

Department of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Ghent University, Campus UZ Gent, Corneel Heymanslaan 10, 9000, Ghent, Belgium.

Purpose: To describe data on epidemiology, microbiology, clinical characteristics and outcome of adult patients admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU) with secondary peritonitis, with special emphasis on antimicrobial therapy and source control.

Methods: Post hoc analysis of a multicenter observational study (Abdominal Sepsis Study, AbSeS) including 2621 adult ICU patients with intra-abdominal infection in 306 ICUs from 42 countries. Time-till-source control intervention was calculated as from time of diagnosis and classified into 'emergency' (< 2 h), 'urgent' (2-6 h), and 'delayed' (> 6 h).

Growing evidence suggests that non-motor symptoms (NMS) in Parkinson's disease (PD) have differential progression patterns that have a different natural history from motor progression and may be geographically influenced. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 1607 PD patients of whom 1327 were from Europe, 208 from the Americas, and 72 from Asia. The primary objective was to assess baseline non-motor burden, defined by Non-Motor Symptoms Scale (NMSS) total scores.

Psoriatic arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease with skin and joint pathology as the dominant characteristics. Scientific evidence supports its systemic nature and relevant relationship with obesity, metabolic syndrome, and associated conditions. Metabolic syndrome and obesity share common signaling pathways with joint inflammation, reinforcing the idea that adipose tissue is a major contributor to disease development and severity.

There is a marked difference between the effects of psychotherapy for major depressive disorder (MDD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD), with treatment being less effective for the latter. Considering the importance of the therapeutic relationship in the prognosis of therapeutic results, some of these differential effects might be explained by the distinctive reactions that patients elicit in their therapists. The aim of the present research was to characterize therapists' perceptions of their emotional and physiological reactions to patients diagnosed with MDD or BPD.

Heterogeneity in Adipose Stem Cells.

Adv Exp Med Biol

August 2019

Centre for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Health Sciences, Interamerican Open University, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Adipose stem cells (ASCs) are the basis of procedures intended for tissue regeneration. These cells are heterogeneous, owing to various factors, including the donor age, sex, body mass index, and clinical condition; the isolation procedure (liposuction or fat excision); the place from where the cells were sampled (body site and depth of each adipose depot); culture surface; type of medium (whether supplemented with fetal bovine serum or xeno-free), that affect the principal phenotypic features of ASCs. The features related to ASCs heterogeneity are relevant for the success of therapeutic procedures; these features include proliferation capacity, differentiation potential, immunophenotype, and the secretome.

Adipose tissue stem cells in regenerative medicine.

Ecancermedicalscience

March 2018

Centre for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Health Sciences, Interamerican Open University, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ADSCs) are mesenchymal cells with the capacity for self-renewal and multipotential differentiation. This multipotentiality allows them to become adipocytes, chondrocytes, myocytes, osteoblasts and neurocytes among other cell lineages. Stem cells and, in particular, adipose tissue-derived cells, play a key role in reconstructive or tissue engineering medicine as they have already proven effective in developing new treatments.

May 2017

Laboratory of Experimental Oncology, Institute of Experimental Medicine (IMEX), The National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET), National Academy of Medicine, Buenos Aires C1425AUM, Argentina.

Despite the classic role of B cells in favoring the immune response, an inhibitory action of B lymphocytes in tumor immunity has emerged in certain studies. In methylcolanthrene-induced murine fibrosarcoma (MCC), the loss of immunogenicity and the establishment of tolerance are paralleled by systemic immune suppression and the appearance of BIL-10 cells in tumor-draining lymph nodes. The present study aimed to assess the role of the BIL-10 cell population in the immune evasion and tolerance induced by MCC through the depletion of B cells in mice at various times of tumor progression: Prior to or subsequent to tumor implantation.
