Purpose: Despite the importance of hospital bed network during the pandemic, there are scarce data available regarding factors predictive of prolonged length of hospitalization of COVID-19 patients.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed a total of 5959 consecutive hospitalized COVID-19 patients in period 3/2020-6/2021 from a single tertiary-level institution. Prolonged hospitalization was defined as hospital stay > 21 days to account for mandatory isolation period in immunocompromised patients.

Tricuspid regurgitation (TR) may occur late after left-sided valve surgery (LSVS). Isolated tricuspid regurgitation after left-sided valve surgery (iTR-LSVS) refers to isolated TR without significant lesions in the mitral and/or aortic position late after mitral and/or aortic replacement or repair. Severe TR has a negative impact on long-term prognosis and requires surgical or transcatheter treatment.

Background: Sepsis is an abnormal immune response after infection, wherein the lung is the most susceptible organ to fail, leading to acute lung injury. To overcome the limitations of current therapeutic strategies and develop more specific treatment, the inflammatory process, in which T cell-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) play a central role, should be explored deeply.
Methods: Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was performed for serum EV protein profiling.

Background: In the previously reported SAPS trial (https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01139489), procalcitonin-guidance safely reduced the duration of antibiotic treatment in critically ill patients. We assessed the impact of shorter antibiotic treatment on antimicrobial resistance development in SAPS patients.

There is a need for reliable predictors in patients with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury to assist clinical decision making. We assess the ability of early continuous EEG monitoring at the intensive care unit (ICU) in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) to predict long term clinical outcome and evaluate its complementary value to current clinical standards. We performed continuous EEG measurements in patients with moderate to severe TBI during the first week of ICU admission.

Background: SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant caused a large number of COVID-19 cases in many countries, including Vietnam. Understanding mortality risk factors is crucial for the clinical management of severe COVID-19.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective study at an intensive care center in Ho Chi Minh City that urgently built by Bach Mai Hospital during the COVID-19 outbreak in Vietnam, when the Delta variant predominated.

Background: Establishing registries to collect demographic characteristics, processes of care, and outcomes of patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) can better understand epidemiological trends, measure care quality, and identify opportunities for improvement. This study aimed to describe the design, implementation, and scientific significance of a nationwide registry-the BASIC-OHCA (Baseline Investigation of Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest)-in China.
Methods: BASIC-OHCA was designed as a prospective, multicenter, observational, population-based study.

Background: The Japan Society for Blood Purification in Critical Care (JSBPCC) has reported survey results on blood purification therapy (BPT) for critically ill patients in 2005, 2009, and 2013. To clarify the current clinical status, including details of the modes used, treated diseases, and survival rate, we conducted this cohort study using data from the nationwide JSBPCC registry in 2018.
Methods: We analyzed data of 2371 patients who underwent BPT in the intensive care units of 43 facilities to investigate patient characteristics, disease severity, modes of BPTs, including the dose of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) and hemofilters, treated diseases, and the survival rate for each disease.

Introduction: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report which provides insights into patient-specific hemodynamics during veno-arterio-venous-extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VAV ECMO) combined with a left-ventricular (LV) Impella micro-axial pump for therapy-refractory cardiac arrest due to acute myocardial infarction, complicated by acute lung injury (ALI).
Patient Presentation: A 54-year-old male patient presented with ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome complicated by out-of-hospital cardiac arrest with ventricular fibrillation upon arrival of the emergency medical service. As cardiac arrest was refractory to advanced cardiac life support, the patient was transferred to the Cardiac Arrest Center for immediate initiation of extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) with peripheral VA ECMO and emergency percutaneous coronary intervention using drug eluting stents in the right coronary artery.

Simulators are expected to assume a prominent role in the process of design-development and testing of cardiovascular medical devices. For this purpose, simulators should capture the complexity of human cardiorespiratory physiology in a realistic way. High fidelity simulations of pathophysiology do not only allow to test the medical device itself, but also to advance practically relevant monitoring and control features while the device acts under realistic conditions.

Background: Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and dysregulated myeloid cell responses are implicated in the pathophysiology and severity of COVID-19.
Methods: In this randomised, sequential, multicentre, placebo-controlled, double-blind study, adults aged 18-79 years (Part 1) or ≥70 years (Part 2) with severe COVID-19, respiratory failure and systemic inflammation (elevated C-reactive protein/ferritin) received a single intravenous infusion of otilimab 90 mg (human anti-GM-CSF monoclonal antibody) plus standard care (NCT04376684). The primary outcome was the proportion of patients alive and free of respiratory failure at Day 28.

High-dose vitamin C therapy has gained increased interest as an adjunctive treatment of septic shock, although convincing evidence is still lacking. High blood levels of vitamin C may interfere with several point-of-care blood glucose meters. We describe the case of a 67-year-old septic patient known with chronic renal failure who developed truly severe hypoglycemia, which was masked by spuriously high glucose values measured on a capillary blood glucose meter.

Background: Thrombosis is a frequent and severe complication in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Lupus anticoagulant (LA) is a strong acquired risk factor for thrombosis in various diseases and is frequently observed in patients with COVID-19. Whether LA is associated with thrombosis in patients with severe COVID-19 is currently unclear.

Background: Cold plasma has many characteristics that allow for effective wound healing. Due to its efficacy, we have applied it in treating patients with severe Covid-19 who have soft tissue skin lesions and diseases including burns, pressure ulcers, shingles, and contact or atopic dermatitis. This study aims to assess the general characteristics of Covid-19 patients with soft tissue lesions and to conduct a fundamental evaluation of the efficacy of cold plasmamed beams in treating soft tissue wounds in patients with severe Covid-19.

Background: In-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) is a common clinical event with poor outcomes. Former IHCA registries in China were local, inconsistent in data reporting, and lacked attention to the process of care. Therefore, we designed and implemented the BASeline Investigation of In-hospital Cardiac Arrest (BASIC-IHCA), the first national IHCA registry in China.

The treatment of invasive drug-resistant and potentially life-threatening fungal infections is limited to few therapeutic options that are usually associated with severe side effects. The development of new effective antimycotics with a more tolerable side effect profile is therefore of utmost clinical importance. Here, we used a combination of complementary in vitro assays and structural analytical methods to analyze the interaction of the de novo antimicrobial peptide VG16KRKP with the sterol moieties of biological cell membranes.
