Neoadjuvant Treatment of Locally Advanced Thyroid Cancer: A Preliminary Latin American Experience.

Surgical resection is not always achievable in thyroid cancer patients. Neoadjuvant therapy is rarely used, but recent trends favor multikinase inhibitors or selective tyrosine kinase inhibitors. These aim to reduce tumor volume, enabling previously unfeasible surgeries.

Impact of Lung Cancer on Health-Related Quality of Life, Financial Toxicity, and Household Economics in Patients From the Public and the Private Healthcare Sector in Argentina.

Objectives: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is Argentina's first cause of cancer death. Most patients have an advanced stage at diagnosis, with poor expected survival. This study aimed to characterize the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and economic impact of patients treated in the private healthcare sector and compare it with that of the public sector.

Sentinel lymph node mapping and intraoperative assessment in a prospective, international, multicentre, observational trial of patients with cervical cancer: The SENTIX trial.

Background: SENTIX (ENGOT-CX2/CEEGOG-CX1) is an international, multicentre, prospective observational trial evaluating sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy without pelvic lymph node dissection in patients with early-stage cervical cancer. We report the final preplanned analysis of the secondary end-points: SLN mapping and outcomes of intraoperative SLN pathology.

Methods: Forty-seven sites (18 countries) with experience of SLN biopsy participated in SENTIX.

Central Pathology Review in SENTIX, A Prospective Observational International Study on Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy in Patients with Early-Stage Cervical Cancer (ENGOT-CX2).

The quality of pathological assessment is crucial for the safety of patients with cervical cancer if pelvic lymph node dissection is to be replaced by sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy. Central pathology review of SLN pathological ultrastaging was conducted in the prospective SENTIX/European Network of Gynaecological Oncological Trial (ENGOT)-CX2 study. All specimens from at least two patients per site were submitted for the central review.

RHBDD2 overexpression promotes a chemoresistant and invasive phenotype to rectal cancer tumors via modulating UPR and focal adhesion genes.

The current standard of care for locally advanced rectal cancer (RC) is neoadjuvant radio-chemotherapy (NRC) with 5-fluorouracil (5Fu) as the main drug, followed by surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy. While a group of patients will achieve a pathological complete response, a significant percentage will not respond to the treatment. The Unfolding Protein Response (UPR) pathway is generally activated in tumors and results in resistance to radio-chemotherapy.

Molecular Epidemiology of ALK Rearrangements in Advanced Lung Adenocarcinoma in Latin America.

Objective: Latin American countries are heterogeneous in terms of lung cancer incidence and exposure to potential carcinogens. We evaluated the frequency and clinical characteristics of ALK rearrangements (ALKr) in Latin America.

Methods: A total of 5,130 lung cancer patients from 10 Latin American countries were screened for inclusion.

Reversal of the Migratory and Invasive Phenotype of Ras-Transfected Mammary Cells by Photodynamic Therapy Treatment.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a non-thermal technique for inducing tumor damage following administration of a light-activated photosensitizing drug (PS). In a previous work we found that PDT induces cytoskeleton changes in HB4a-Ras cells (human mammary breast carcinoma HB4a cells transfected with the RAS oncogene). In the present work we have studied the migratory and invasive features and the expression of proteins related to these processes on HB4a-Ras cells after three successive cycles of PDT using different PSs: 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), Verteporfin (Verte), m-tetrahydroxyphenylchlorin (m-THPC), and Merocyanine 540 (MC).

Low frequency of cigarette smoking and the risk of head and neck cancer in the INHANCE consortium pooled analysis.

Background: Cigarette smoking is a major risk factor for head and neck cancer (HNC). To our knowledge, low cigarette smoking (<10 cigarettes per day) has not been extensively investigated in fine categories or among never alcohol drinkers.

Methods: We conducted a pooled analysis of individual participant data from 23 independent case-control studies including 19 660 HNC cases and 25 566 controls.

Stat3 regulates ErbB-2 expression and co-opts ErbB-2 nuclear function to induce miR-21 expression, PDCD4 downregulation and breast cancer metastasis.

Membrane overexpression of the receptor tyrosine kinase ErbB-2 (MErbB-2) accounts for a clinically aggressive breast cancer (BC) subtype (ErbB-2-positive) with increased incidence of metastases. We and others demonstrated that nuclear ErbB-2 (NErbB-2) also plays a key role in BC and is a poor prognostic factor in ErbB-2-positive tumors. The signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (Stat3), another player in BC, has been recognized as a downstream mediator of MErbB-2 action in BC metastasis.

Pandemic 2009 Influenza A (H1N1) virus infection in cancer and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients; a multicenter observational study.

Background: During March 2009 a novel Influenza A virus emerged in Mexico. We describe the clinical picture of the pandemic Influenza A (H1N1) Influenza in cancer patients during the 2009 influenza season.

Methods: Twelve centers participated in a multicenter retrospective observational study of cancer patients with confirmed infection with the 2009 H1N1 Influenza A virus (influenza-like illness or pneumonia plus positive PCR for the 2009 H1N1 Influenza A virus  in respiratory secretions).

The natural flavonoid silybin improves the response to Photodynamic Therapy of bladder cancer cells.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is an anticancer treatment based on photosensitisation of malignant cells. The precursor of the photosensitiser Protoporphyrin IX, 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), has been used for PDT of bladder cancer. Silybin is a flavonoid extracted from Silybum marianum, and it has been reported to increase the efficacy of several anticancer treatments.

Role of peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-gamma in bacillus Calmette-Guérin bladder cancer therapy.

Purpose: We evaluated the effects of combined PPARg agonist with bacillus Calmette-Guérin in bladder cancer growth in vitro and in vivo, focusing on the tissue remodeling mechanisms induced by bacillus Calmette-Guérin.

Materials And Methods: PPARs are a superfamily of nuclear receptors that are transcription factors activated by ligands. Activation of PPARg, the γ subtype, causes proliferation inhibition or differentiation of tumor cells.

Effect of Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) on normal liver regeneration: towards a novel therapy for liver metastases.

Purpose: The effect of Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) on normal liver regeneration was examined in the Wistar rat. The model used is clinically relevant to a novel technique proposed for the treatment of multifocal non-resectable liver metastases in man. The success of the technique also requires that BNCT should not significantly impair regeneration of normal hepatocytes.

Smoking behavior and its determinants among women in Concordia, Argentina.

This study assessed smoking, sexual, and reproductive behaviors as determinants of smoking behavior in women from Concordia, Province of Entre Ríos, Argentina, a population with a low incidence of lung cancer and a high incidence of cervical cancer. Interviewers administered structured, close-ended questionnaires to 1,028 women, aged at least 15 years, living in a random sample of households. We calculated the prevalence of smoking-related variables by age group and used a multivariate logistic regression model to identify various behavioral determinants of smoking.
