Introduction: Major urban pollutants have a considerable influence on the natural history of lung disease. However, this effect is not well known in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).

Aim: This study aimed to investigate the effects of air pollution on clinical worsening, lung function, and radiological deterioration in patients with IPF.

Background: Ectomesenchymomas (EMs) are extremely rare neoplasms composed of malignant mesenchymal components and neuroectodermal derivatives. They are described in a wide variety of locations, with the head and neck region being one of the most frequently involved areas. EMs are usually managed as high-risk rhabdomyosarcomas and have similar outcomes.

In order to ascertain the present state of undergraduate pathology teaching in Spain, the Spanish Society of Pathology sent a survey to the coordinators of the subject in every Medical School. The survey consisted of a form created using Google Forms tool and covered various aspects of teaching, such as the different syllabi, methodology and resources. 62% of the 55 Medical Schools contacted participated in the study (76% public and 25% private).

Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) accounts for less than 1 % of all soft tissue sarcomas. ASPS presents a poor prognosis and develops frequent metastases, especially in the lungs, brain and bones. Current therapies, such as surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, are not fully effective and other alternative treatments are currently being studied.

Article Synopsis
  • Antimicrobial resistance is rising as a major public health issue, with irrational use of antimicrobials being a key contributor, particularly among children who often receive inappropriate prescriptions.
  • The implementation of antimicrobial stewardship programmes (ASPs) is critical in fighting this resistance and should be tailored specifically for paediatric patients due to their unique needs compared to adults.
  • The Sociedad Española de Infectología Pediátrica (SEIP) aims to promote and provide resources for effective paediatric ASPs in Spanish hospitals to enhance patient care and combat antimicrobial resistance effectively.

Background And Aims: The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has challenged health services worldwide, with a worsening of healthcare workers' mental health within initial pandemic hotspots. In early 2022, the Omicron variant is spreading rapidly around the world. This study explores the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a stepped-care programme of scalable, internet-based psychological interventions for distressed health workers on self-reported anxiety and depression symptoms.

Background: Healthcare workers (HCWs) from COVID-19 hotspots worldwide have reported poor mental health outcomes since the pandemic's beginning. The virulence of the initial COVID-19 surge in Spain and the urgency for rapid evidence constrained early studies in their capacity to inform mental health programs accurately. Here, we used a qualitative research design to describe relevant mental health problems among frontline HCWs and explore their association with determinants and consequences and their implications for the design and implementation of mental health programs.

Background: Achondroplasia is the most common short-limbed skeletal dysplasia resulting from gain-of-function pathogenic variants in fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 () gene, a negative regulator of endochondral bone formation. Most treatment options are symptomatic, targeting medical complications. Infigratinib is an orally bioavailable, FGFR1-3 selective tyrosine kinase inhibitor being investigated as a direct therapeutic strategy to counteract FGFR3 overactivity in achondroplasia.

Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS) is a rare, heterogeneous, and complex neurodevelopmental disorder. It is generally caused by a heterozygous microdeletion of contiguous genes located in the distal portion of the long arm of chromosome 22, including the gene. Sequence variants of , including frameshift, nonsense mutations, small indels and splice site mutations also result in PMS.

The role of social support and resilience in the mental health impact of the COVID-19 pandemic among healthcare workers in Spain.

J Psychiatr Res

April 2022

Department of Personality, Assessment and Psychological Treatment, Universidad de Málaga, Málaga, Spain; Andalusian Group of Psychosocial Research (GAP), Andalusia, Spain; Instituto de Investigación Biomédica de Málaga (IBIMA), Málaga, Spain.

Background: Healthcare workers (HCWs) from COVID-19 pandemic hotspots across the globe have reported mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, or sleep problems. Many studies have focused on identifying modifiable risk factors, such as being afraid of getting infected or reporting shortage of personal protective equipment, but none have explored the role of protective factors.

Method: This cross-sectional study used an online survey to describe the association between three potentially protective factors (self-reported resilience, self-perceived social support from colleagues at work, and self-perceived social support from relatives and friends) and three mental health outcomes, namely psychological distress, depression symptoms, and death thoughts in a large sample of Spanish HCWs during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: Eribulin has shown antitumour activity in some soft tissue sarcomas (STSs), but it has only been approved for advanced liposarcoma (LPS).

Methods: In this study, we evaluated the effect of eribulin on proliferation, migration and invasion capabilities in LPS, leiomyosarcoma (LMS) and fibrosarcoma (FS) models, using both monolayer (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) spheroid cell cultures. Additionally, we explored combinations of eribulin with other drugs commonly used in the treatment of STS with the aim of increasing its antitumour activity.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is prevalent in pregnancy and it is associated with adverse pregnancy-related outcomes such as gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, and low birth weight. Maternal systemic inflammation is proposed to be one of the main intermediate mechanisms. However, the effects of OSA on systemic inflammation are unknown in normal pregnancy.

Article Synopsis
  • Atrial fibrillation (AF) has become more common, increasing the risk of strokes, but recent studies indicate that the use of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) may be reducing stroke rates related to AF in Spain.
  • The study used data from the Spanish Ministry of Health to analyze the relationship between DOAC use and AF-related ischemic strokes in patients aged 65 and older, using statistical models for analysis.
  • Results showed that before DOACs were widely used, the incidence of AF-related strokes rose, but after their introduction, rates stabilized or slightly decreased, indicating that higher DOAC uptake may positively impact health outcomes for AF patients.

Background: Tracheostomy is one of the most frequent techniques in intensive care units (ICU). Fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FB) is a safety measure when performing a percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy (PDT), but the controversy surrounding the routine use of FB as part of the procedure remains open. National surveys in some European countries showed that the use of FB is non-standardized.

Introduction And Objective: Breast cancer can be classified into different molecular subtypes with important therapeutic and prognostic implications. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) increases the possibility of performing conservative surgery and allows in vivo testing of the sensitivity of the tumor. Our aim was to evaluate the pathological response to NAC in relation to the molecular phenotype and the different definitions of the pathological response.
