Introduction: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the leading cause of congenital infection worldwide. Data about the management of CMV infection in pregnant women are scarce, and treatment options are very limited. The aim of the study is to investigate the effectiveness of cytomegalovirus hyperimmune globulin (CMV-HIG) for the prevention and treatment of congenital CMV (cCMV) infection.

Objective: To describe the evolution of soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 to placental growth factor (sFlt-1/PlGF) ratio in the last 5 weeks prior to delivery in singleton pregnancy complicated by early-onset fetal growth restriction (FGR), with or without pre-eclampsia (PE).
Methods: This was a prospective observational cohort study of early-onset FGR cases that underwent serial assessment of maternal serum sFlt-1/PlGF ratio from diagnosis to delivery. Measurements were made at weekly intervals and within the last 48 h before birth.

Patients with a first episode of psychosis (FEP) display a broad range of metabolic risk factors related to the development of diverse medical comorbidities. Initial stages of these disorders are essential in understanding the increased vulnerability of developing cardiometabolic disturbances, associated with a reduced life expectancy. This study aimed to evaluate the metabolic profile of a cohort of patients with a FEP and its evolution during a two year follow-up, as well as the factors that influence the changes in their metabolic status.

The infection of humans by lethal pathogens such as Ebola and other related viruses has not been properly addressed so far. In this context, a relevant question arises: What can chemistry do in the search for new strategies and approaches to solve this emergent problem? Although initially a variety of known chemical compounds-for other purposes-proved disappointing in tests against Ebola virus (EBOV) infection, more recently, specific molecules have been prepared. In this Perspective, we present new approaches directed at the design of efficient entry inhibitors to minimize the development of resistance by viral mutations.

Background: Complement dysregulation occurs in thrombotic microangiopathies (TMAs) other than primary atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome (aHUS). A few of these patients have been reported previously to be successfully treated with eculizumab.
Methods: We identified 29 patients with so-called secondary aHUS who had received eculizumab at 11 Spanish nephrology centres.

Objective: Acquired tracheal stenosis (ATS) is an unusual disease often secondary to prolonged mechanical trauma. Acquired tracheal stenosis pathogenesis involves inflammation and subsequent fibrosis with narrowing of the tracheal lumen. Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β) represents a pivotal factor in most fibrotic processes, and therefore a potential target in this context.

There is a growing awareness that gut commensal metabolites play a major role in host physiology and indeed the pathophysiology of several illnesses. The composition of the microbiota largely determines the levels of tryptophan in the systemic circulation and hence, indirectly, the levels of serotonin in the brain. Some microbiota synthesize neurotransmitters directly, e.

Introduction: Healthy state depends on the appropriate function of the homeostatic systems (nervous, endocrine and immune systems) and the correct communication between them. The functional and redox state of the immune system is an excellent marker of health, and animals with premature immunosenescence show a shorter lifespan. Since catecholamines modulate the function of immune cells, the alteration in their synthesis could provoke immunosenescence.

The innate immunity is a stereotyped first line of defense against pathogens and unspecified damage signals. One of main actors of innate immunity are the Toll-like receptors (TLRs), and one of the better characterized members of this family is TLR-4, that it is mainly activated by Gram-negative bacteria lipopolysaccharide. In brain, TLR-4 organizes innate immune responses against infections or cellular damage, but also possesses other physiological functions.

Background: The current outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease in West Africa is caused by a new variant of Ebola virus (EBOV) named Makona 2014, whose sequence differs 3% from isolates from Central Africa such as Mayinga 1976 EBOV. The specificity and kinetics of the neutralizing antibody response induced by the circulating Makona EBOV has not been thoroughly studied.
Methods: We have used a lentiviral EBOV-glycoprotein (GP)-pseudotyped infection assay to measure Makona-GP and Mayinga-GP specific neutralizing activity of plasma from three convalescent Ebola Virus Disease patients from the current EBOV outbreak at 2, 3, 4 and 9 months post-infection.

Among all the chemokines known so far, chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 2 (CCL2) is probably the best characterized. This is mainly due to the therapeutic potential attributed to its regulation. The suppression of CCL2 function may reduce the attraction of immune cells to the sites of inflammation and therefore slow down the progression of inflammation and the tissue damage that may be associated to it.

The development of compounds with strong affinity for the receptor DC-SIGN is a topic of remarkable interest due to the role that this lectin plays in several pathogen infection processes and in the modulation of the immune response. DC-SIGN recognizes mannosylated and fucosylated oligosaccharides in a multivalent manner. Therefore, multivalent carbohydrate systems are required to interact in an efficient manner with this receptor and compete with the natural ligands.
