The particulate and soluble matter present in aerosols from combustible cigarettes (CCs) and Heated Tobacco Products (HTPs) was collected in liquid water. These liquids, yellowish in the experiments with cigarettes and colourless after using HTPs, were analysed by Laser Diffraction (LD) and by Transmission Electron Microscopy coupled to Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (TEM-EDX) to study the amount, size, composition, and other features of the particulate matter (PM) present in the collected aerosols. The particulate matter concentration in HTPs samples is below the limit of quantification for LD, and only samples from cigarettes show a particulate matter concentration above such limit.

Our study unveils a pioneering methodology that effectively distributes Pd species within a zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). We demonstrate that Pd can be encapsulated within ZIF-8 as atomically dispersed Pd species that function as an excited-state transition metal catalyst for promoting carbon-carbon (C-C) cross-couplings at room temperature using visible light as the driving force. Furthermore, the same material can be reduced at 250 °C, forming Pd metal nanoparticles encapsulated in ZIF-8.

Department of Quantum Nanoscience, Delft University of Technology, Delft 2628CJ, The Netherlands.

Helical molecules have been proposed as candidates for producing spin-polarized currents, even at room conditions, due to their chiral asymmetry. However, describing their transport mechanism in single molecular junctions is not straightforward. In this work, we show the synthesis of two novel kinds of dithia[11]helicenes to study their electronic transport in break junctions among a series of three helical molecules: dithia[]helicenes, with = 7, 9, and 11 molecular units.

Departamento de Física Aplicada, Universidad de Alicante, 03690 Alicante, Spain.

Controlling the thickness and uniformity of biomaterial films is crucial for their application in various fields including sensing and bioelectronics. In this work, we investigated film assemblies of an engineered repeat protein─specifically, the consensus tetratricopeptide repeat (CTPR) protein ─a system with unique robustness and tunability. We propose the use of microreflectance spectroscopy and apparent color inspection for the quick assessment of the thickness and uniformity of protein-based biomaterial films deposited on oxidized silicon substrates.

Graphene-like molecules with multiple zigzag edges are emerging as promising gain materials for organic lasers. Their emission wavelengths can vary widely, ranging from visible to near-infrared (NIR), as the molecular size increases. Specifically, rhombus-shaped molecular graphenes with two pairs of parallel zigzag edges, known as [n]rhombenes, are excellent candidates for NIR lasers due to their small energy gaps.

The electronic structure of 7/9-AGNR superlattices with up to eight unit cells has been studied by means of state-of-the-art Density Functional Theory (DFT) and also by two model Hamiltonians, the first one including only local interactions (Hubbard model, Hu) while the second one is extended to allow long-range Coulomb interactions (Pariser, Parr and Pople model, PPP). Both are solved within mean field approximation. At this approximation level, our calculations show that 7/9 interfaces are better described by spin non-polarized solutions than by spin-polarized wavefunctions.

The combination of specific van der Waals semiconductors in vertical stacks leads to atomically sharp heterointerfaces with unique properties, offering versatility and additional functionality for thin, flexible, optoelectronic devices. In this work, we demonstrate heterostructures built from single-layer MoS (n-type) and multilayer FePS (p-type) as multifunctional p-n junctions where robust photoluminescent light emission and broadband electrical photo-response coexist. This is made possible by the inherent properties of the materials involved and the precise energy band alignment at their interface, which preserves the photoluminescent emission provided by the single-layer MoS and confers exceptional tunability to the system.

Ordinary metals contain electron liquids within well-defined 'Fermi' surfaces at which the electrons behave as if they were non-interacting. In the absence of transitions to entirely new phases such as insulators or superconductors, interactions between electrons induce scattering that is quadratic in the deviation of the binding energy from the Fermi level. A long-standing puzzle is that certain materials do not fit this 'Fermi liquid' description.

Metal-organic frameworks have drawn attention as potential catalysts owing to their unique tunable surface chemistry and accessibility. However, their application in thermal catalysis has been limited because of their instability under harsh temperatures and pressures, such as the hydrogenation of CO to methanol. Herein, we use a controlled two-step method to synthesize finely dispersed Cu on a zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8).

In the field of molecular electronics, especially in quantum transport experiments, determining the geometrical configurations of a single molecule trapped between two electrodes can be challenging. To address this challenge, we employed a combination of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and electronic transport calculations based on density functional theory to determine the molecular orientation in our break-junction experiments under ambient conditions. The molecules used in this study are common solvents used in molecular electronics, such as benzene, toluene (aromatic), and cyclohexane (aliphatic).

The aim of this work is to establish the Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) activity of self-standing electrospun carbon fiber catalysts obtained from different metallic salt/lignin solutions. Through a single-step electrospinning technique, freestanding carbon fiber (CF) electrodes embedded with various metal nanoparticles (Co, Fe, Pt, and Pd), with 8-16 wt% loadings, were prepared using organosolv lignin as the initial material. These fibers were formed from a solution of lignin and ethanol, into which the metallic salt precursors were introduced, without additives or the use of toxic reagents.

Fluorescent Nanocomposite Hydrogels Based on Conjugated Polymer Nanoparticles as Platforms for Alkaline Phosphatase Detection.

Biosensors (Basel)

March 2023

Instituto de Investigación, Desarrollo e Innovación en Biotecnología Sanitaria de Elche (IDiBE), Universidad Miguel Hernández, 03202 Elche, Spain.

This work describes the development and characterization of fluorescent nanocomposite hydrogels, with high swelling and absorption capacity, and prepared using a green protocol. These fluorescent materials are obtained by incorporating, for the first time, polyfluorenes-based nanoparticles with different emission bands-poly[9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl] (PFO) and poly[(9,9-di-n-octylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-alt-(1,4-benzo-{2,1,3}-thiadiazole)] (F8BT)-into a three-dimensional polymeric network based on polyacrylamide. To this end, two strategies were explored: incorporation of the nanoparticles during the polymerization process (in situ) and embedment after the hydrogel formation (ex situ).

Reverse water gas shift (RWGS) competes with methanation as a direct pathway in the CO recycling route, with methanation being a dominant process in the low-temperature window and RWGS at higher temperatures. This work showcases the design of multi-component catalysts for a full-temperature-range RWGS behavior by suppressing the methanation reaction at low temperatures. The addition of alkali promoters (Na, K, and Cs) to the reference Ni/CeO catalyst allows identifying a clear trend in RWGS activation promotion in both low- and high-temperature ranges.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous hybrid materials with countless potential applications. Most of these rely on their porous structure, tunable composition, and the possibility of incorporating and expanding their functions. Although functionalization of the inner surface of MOF crystals has received considerable attention in recent years, methods to functionalize selectively the outer crystal surface of MOFs are developed to a lesser extent, despite their importance.

We report the synthesis of a dibenzodinaphthocoronene (DBDNC) derivative as a novel nanographene with armchair, zigzag, and fjord edges, which was characterized by NMR and X-ray crystallography as well as infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopies. Ultrafast transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy revealed the presence of stimulated emission signals at 655 nm and 710 nm with a relatively long lifetime, which resulted in dual amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) bands under ns-pulsed excitation, indicating the promise of DBNDC as a near-infrared (NIR) fluorophore for photonics. Our results provide new insight into the design of nanographene with intriguing optical properties by incorporating fjord edges.
