Enantiomer-Selective Characterization of the Adsorption, Dissipation, and Phytotoxicity of the Plant Monoterpene Pulegone in Soils.

Plant monoterpenes have received attention for their ecological functions and as potential surrogates for synthetic herbicides, but very little is known about the processes that govern their behavior in the soil environment, and even less about the possible enantioselectivity in the functions and environmental behavior of chiral monoterpenes. We characterized the adsorption and dissipation of the two enantiomers of the chiral monoterpene pulegone in different soils, and their phytotoxicity to different plant species through Petri dish and soil bioassays. R- and S-pulegone displayed a low-to-moderate non-enantioselective adsorption on the soils that involved weak interaction mechanisms.

A single-step sample treatment, for the simultaneous extraction and clean-up for the determination of ionophore coccidiostats in EU legislated foodstuffs, is here proposed. The treatment is based on the combination of: (i) a supramolecular solvent with restricted access properties (SUPRAS-RAM), spontaneously formed by the addition of hexanol, water and THF to the sample; and (ii) dispersive solid phase extraction (dSPE). The SUPRAS-RAM extract was directly compatible with LC-MS/MS and no further re-extraction, evaporation or cleanup procedures were necessary.

Oleate ion was intercalated into a hydrotalcite obtained using a conventional precipitation method and an alternative, novel method involving microwave-assisted ion exchange. The latter method gave a more crystalline hydrotalcite with better textural properties than the former. The spacing between layers in the hydrotalcites was used to epoxidize the double bond in oleate ion.

A highly flexible method based on micro-Raman spectroscopy was used to examine pigment traces on an Annunciation sculpture group dating from the late Middle Ages. The group comprises a statue of the Archangel Gabriel and another of the Virgin Mary. Both are currently housed in the Archaeological Museum of Cordoba, southern Spain.

A new procedure for the functionalization of melamine sponge (MeS) with urea-formaldehyde (UF) co-oligomers is put forward. The procedure differs from the typical synthesis of the UF co-polymer, as it employs a base-catalyzed condensation step at certain concentrations of urea and formaldehyde. The produced melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) sponge cubes are hydrophobic, despite the presence of hydrophilic groups in the oligomers.

Highly crystalline MIL-88A particles have been successfully synthesized via fast ultrasound-assisted processes. The influence of the sonication generator and synthesis time on the structure, crystallinity, morphology and surface area of the materials were studied in detail. Under this modified ultrasonic method, X-ray diffraction patterns of MIL-88A particles showed highly crystalline structures in contrast to those reported in literature.

This study reports on the electrochemical alloying-dealloying properties of Mg₂Sn intermetallic compounds. Sn Mössbauer spectra of β-Sn powder, thermally alloyed cubic-Mg₂Sn, and an intermediate MgSn nominal composition are used as references. The discharge of a Mg/micro-Sn half-cell led to significant changes in the spectra line shape, which is explained by a multiphase mechanism involving the coexistence of c-Mg₂Sn, distorted MgSn, and Mg-doped β-Sn.

Halogen bonding (XB), a highly energetic and directional interaction, is here proposed as a new mechanism to increase solute solubilisation in solvent extractions. The approach is illustrated by the extraction of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) enantiomers in soils and sediments using supramolecular solvents (SUPRAS) containing XB donors in their structure. SUPRAS consisting of inverted hexagonal aggregates of decanoic acid, synthesized by water-induced coacervation of the amphiphile in tetrahydrofuran (THF), were explored for this purpose.

Mesocrystalline TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized using a hydrothermal approach. A simple two-step procedure at low temperature (<140 °C) allowed the nucleation of primary particles sized 2-4 nm and their subsequent assembly as almost spherical aggregates sized ≈20 nm. Hybrids consisting of silver nanoparticles (in varying fractions) and of TiOx/ZnO were prepared via top-down ion beam sputtering (IBS) deposition on silicon substrates. The deposited nanomaterials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A suitable methodology of synthesis of coumarin derivatives by Pechmann reaction over heterogeneous solid acid catalysts in a free solvent media under microwave irradiation is described. Resorcinol, phenol and ethyl acetoacetate were selected as model reactants in the Pechmann condensation. Two materials - a mesoporous silica (MS) and a periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) functionalized with dipyridyl-pyridazine (dppz) units were grafted with near-infrared (NIR) emitting lanthanide (Nd, Er, Yb) complexes in an attempt to obtain hybrid NIR emitting materials. The parent materials: dppz-vSilica and dppz-ePMO were prepared by a hetero Diels-Alder reaction between 3,6-di(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (dptz) and the double bonds of either ethenylene-bridged PMO (ePMO) or vinyl-silica (vSilica) and subsequent oxidation. The dppz-vSilica is reported here for the first time.
