Background: Calcific Uremic Arteriolopathy (CUA) is a rare disease, causing painful skin ulcers in patients with end stage renal disease. Recommendations for CUA management and treatment are lacking.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study on CUA cases identified in western France, in order to describe its management and outcome in average clinical practices.

Survival and specific outcome of sickle cell disease patients after renal transplantation.

Br J Haematol

December 2019

AP-HP (Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris), Department of Nephrology and Transplantation, Rare French Disease Centre "Idiopathic Nephrotic syndrome", Henri-Mondor/Albert-Chenevier Hospital, Créteil, France.

The prognosis of sickle cell disease (SCD) patients who need dialysis is poor, but experience with kidney transplantation is limited. This study assessed the characteristics of 36 SCD patients undergoing renal transplantation. Immediate post-surgical complications occurred in 25% of cases.

Structural valve deterioration of bioprosthetic aortic valves: An underestimated complication.

J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg

April 2019

INSERM UMR 1246 - SPHERE for Nantes University, Tours University, Tours, France; Center for Research in Transplantation and Immunology, Institute of Transplantation Urology and Nephrology, St Herblain, France.

Objectives: Structural valve deterioration (SVD) remains a major bioprosthesis-related complication, as recently described for the Mitroflow valve (models LX and 12A) (LivaNova, London, United Kingdom). The real incidence of the SVD risk remains unclear, often due to methodologic pitfalls by systematically using the Kaplan-Meier estimator and/or the Cox model. In this report, we propose for the first time a precise statistical modeling of this issue.

Article Synopsis
  • Simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplantation (SPK) is an effective treatment for individuals with type 1 diabetes and severe kidney failure, allowing restored fertility and enabling pregnancies for women.
  • A study of pregnancies among SPK recipients in France showed a high fetal survival rate (92.6%) but maternal complications such as gestational hypertension (53.8%) and infections (50%).
  • Overall, while kidney and pancreas graft survival rates remained high post-pregnancy, it is essential for patients to be aware of potential risks and receive personalized care to optimize outcomes during and after pregnancy.

Background: Kidney recipients maintaining a prolonged allograft survival in the absence of immunosuppressive drugs and without evidence of rejection are supposed to be exceptional. The ERA-EDTA-DESCARTES working group together with Nantes University launched a European-wide survey to identify new patients, describe them and estimate their frequency for the first time.

Methods: Seventeen coordinators distributed a questionnaire in 256 transplant centres and 28 countries in order to report as many 'operationally tolerant' patients (TOL; defined as having a serum creatinine <1.

Tolerant Kidney Transplant Patients Produce B Cells with Regulatory Properties.

J Am Soc Nephrol

October 2015

Joint Research Unit 1064, French Institute of Health and Medical Research, Nantes, France; Faculty of Medicine, Nantes University, Nantes, France; and Institute of Transplantation Urology and Nephrology, Nantes University Hospital, Nantes, France

Whereas a B cell-transcriptional profile has been recorded for operationally tolerant kidney graft patients, the role that B cells have in this tolerance has not been reported. In this study, we analyzed the role of B cells from operationally tolerant patients, healthy volunteers, and kidney transplant recipients with stable graft function on T cell suppression. Proliferation, apoptosis, and type I proinflammatory cytokine production by effector CD4(+)CD25(-) T cells were measured after anti-CD3/anti-CD28 stimulation with or without autologous B cells.
