Aberrant accumulation of dysfunctional mitochondria in renal cells during hyperglycemia signifies perturbed autophagy and mitochondrial turnover. This study aims to focus on the underlying mechanism involved in autophagy and mitophagy inducing efficacy of Berberine (isoquinoline alkaloid) in hyperglycemic NRK-52E cells. Berberine mediated protection to hyperglycemic cells prevented alteration in mitochondrial structure and function.

The maintenance of hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) functional integrity is essential for effective hematopoietic regeneration when suffering from injuries. Studies have shown that the innate immune pathways play crucial roles in the stress response of HSCs, whereas how to precisely modulate these pathways is not well characterized. Here, we identify the E3 ubiquitin ligase tripartite motif-containing 47 (Trim47) as a negative regulator of the mitochondrial antiviral-signaling protein (MAVS)-mediated innate immune pathway in HSCs.

Acquired chemoresistance remains a significant challenge in the clinics as most of the treated cancers eventually emerge as hard-to-treat phenotypes. The global prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is continuously rising and exposure to environmental toxicants such as arsenic could be contributing to this rapid surge. In this study, we have assessed the effects of prenatal arsenic exposure on insulin resistance and MetS parameters in a mouse model, and an underlying mechanism was identified. We found that prenatal arsenic exposure promotes insulin resistance and adipocyte dysfunction which leads to the early onset of MetS in male offspring.

Although biocides are important materials in modern society and help protect human health and the environment, increasing exposure to combined biocides can cause severe side effects in the human body, such as lung fibrosis. In this study, we developed a receptonics system to screen for biocides in combined household chemical products based on biocides. The system contains transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) nanovesicles (NVs) to sense biocides based on pain receptors and a side-gated field-effect transistor (SGFET) using a single-layer graphene (SLG) micropattern channel.

The study aimed to investigate the combined effects of chlorpyrifos and cypermethrin combined on dopaminergic neurotoxicity, motor behaviours and level of selected inflammatory proteins in rats compared to either alone for delineating an interaction between these two pesticides. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is common in cardiovascular disease (CVD), although positive airway pressure (PAP) treatment has not been demonstrated to improve the cardiovascular outcome. Staphylococcus aureus is a prevalent pathogen in pneumonia and harbors glycolipids, which may serve as molecular patterns in Mincle (macrophage-inducible C-type lectin)-dependent pathogen recognition. We examined the role of Mincle in lung defense against S aureus in wild-type (WT), Mincle knockout (KO), and Mincle transgenic (tg) mice. Two glycolipids, glucosyl-diacylglycerol (Glc-DAG) and diglucosyl-diacylglycerol (Glc2-DAG), were purified, of which only Glc-DAG triggered Mincle reporter cell activation and professional phagocyte responses.

We explored the potential of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as novel materials for wastewater treatment and their role towards environmental sustainability. The advantages of CQDs over other carbon-based materials, when synthesized using the same precursor material and for the same contaminant are discussed, enabling future researchers to choose the appropriate material. CQDs have demonstrated exceptional adaptability in various wastewater treatment, acting as efficient adsorbents for contaminants, exhibiting excellent photocatalytic properties for degradation of organic pollutants, and functioning as highly sensitive sensors for water quality monitoring.

Phenothiazines (PTZ) are antipsychotics known to modulate a variety of neurotransmitter activities that include dopaminergic and cholinergic signaling and have been identified as potential anticancer agents in vitro. However, it is important to also test whether a highly cytotoxic, repurposed, or novel PTZ has low toxicity and neuromodulatory activity in vivo using vertebrate model organisms, such as zebrafish. Nonunion and delayed union of the bone are situations in orthopedic surgery that can occur even if the bone alignment is correct and there is sufficient mechanical stability. Surgeons usually apply artificial bone grafts in bone fracture gaps or in bone defect sites for osteogenesis to improve bone healing; however, these bone graft materials have no osteoinductive or osteogenic properties, and fit the morphology of the fracture gap with difficulty. In this study, we developed an injectable chitosan-based hydrogel with MgSO and dextran oxidative, with the purpose to improve bone healing through introducing an engineered chitosan-based hydrogel.
