Biodiversity-safeguarding threshold for urea-fertilizer application on paddy fields: Protozoa-based toxicity tests.

J Environ Manage

November 2024

Laboratory of Protozoa, College of Life Science and Technology, Harbin Normal University, Harbin, 150025, China; Key Laboratory of Biodiversity of Aquatic Organisms, Harbin Normal University, Harbin, 150025, China. Electronic address:

Urea is a widely applied fertilizer to enhance crop yields. Ecological risks associated with the excessive application of urea fertilizer threaten the paddy fields' sustainable agriculture and biodiversity preservation. There are no practical thresholds based on proven data on microbial communities.

Effects of depth of straw returning on maize yield potential and greenhouse gas emissions.

February 2024

Heilongjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Qiqihar, China.

Appropriate straw incorporation has ample agronomic and environmental benefits, but most studies are limited to straw mulching or application on the soil surface. To determine the effect of depth of straw incorporation on the crop yield, soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN) and greenhouse gas emission, a total of 4 treatments were set up in this study, which comprised no straw returning (CK), straw returning at 15 cm (S15), straw returning at 25 cm (S25) and straw returning at 40 cm (S40). The results showed that straw incorporation significantly increased SOC, TN and C:N ratio.

Department of Plant Pathology, College of Plant Protection, China Agricultural University, Beijing 100193, China.

Common scab (CS) caused by spp. is a significant soilborne potato disease that results in tremendous economic losses globally. Identification of CS-associated species of the genus can enhance understanding of the genetic variation of these bacterial species and is necessary for the control of this epidemic disease.

Superoxide dismutases (SODs) are a group of enzymes that have a crucial role in controlling oxidative stress in plants. Here, we synthesized an environmentally friendly SOD mimic, SODm-123, from L-aspartic acid and manganese oxide. SODm-123 showed similar enzymatic activity to Mn-SOD.

Field experiments were installed in different accumulated temperature zones in Heilongjiang Province to study the changes of the grain yield and quality of five major rice varieties with accumulated temperature. The rice yield changed with accumulated temperature in quadratic curve, and the correlation degree differed with the varieties. The panicle number and the grain number per panicle changed significantly in quadratic curve with accumulated temperature, while the 1000-grain mass had less correlation with accumulated temperature.
