During the radiation exposure of the body, processes similar to those characteristic of the natural aging of mammals occur. This phenomenon is most often referred to as accelerated aging. By transplanting the thymus tissue, it is possible to achieve a normalization of food and water consumption, a stabilization of weight gain, and a significant increase in the life expectancy of experimental animals, even after their lethal irradiation.

Reverse electron transfer in mitochondrial complex II (CII) plays an important role in hypoxia/anoxia, in particular, in ischemia, when the blood supply to an organ is disrupted and oxygen is not available. A computational model of CII was developed in this work to facilitate the quantitative analysis of the kinetics of quinol-fumarate reduction as well as ROS production during reverse electron transfer in CII. The model consists of 20 ordinary differential equations and 7 moiety conservation equations.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFSuccinate dehydrogenase (SDH) plays an important role in reverse electron transfer during hypoxia/anoxia, in particular, in ischemia, when blood supply to an organ is disrupted, and oxygen is not available. It was detected in the voltammetry studies about three decades ago that the SDHA/SDHB subcomplex of SDH can have such a strong nonlinear property as a "tunnel-diode" behavior in reverse quinol-fumarate reductase direction. The molecular and kinetic mechanisms of this phenomenon, that is, a strong drop in the rate of fumarate reduction as the driving force is increased, are still unclear.

The septal GABAergic system plays a central role in the regulation of activity and excitability of the hippocampus (the main locus of temporal lobe epilepsy, TLE), but the character of changes the septum undergoes in this pathology remains unknown. To address this issue we studied the influences on GABAergic receptors in septal slices from the brain of epileptic guinea pigs compared to a control. In the epileptic brain, the overall increase in the mean frequency of neuronal discharges and the rise in the number of bursting neurons were revealed.

Chain-ordering/melting transition in a series of saturated diacylphosphatidylcholines (PCs) in aqueous dispersions have been studied experimentally (calorimetric and ultrasonic techniques) and theoretically (an Ising-like lattice model). The shape of the calorimetric curves was compared with the theoretical data and interpreted in terms of the lateral interactions and critical temperatures determined for each lipid studied. A critical chain length has been found (between 16 and 17 C-atoms per chain) which subdivides PCs into two classes with different phase behavior.

Clinical experience of Perftoran (commercial drug of low concentrated perfluorocheminal emulsion) applications is presented in some statistical data and in brief analysis of clinical trials and following clinical studies described in the Russian scientific literature. Observed data allow us to suppose that Perftoran facilitates oxygen delivery together with remaining red blood cells at blood replacements and will have more wider area for application than just a blood substitute. Its infusion alleviates symptoms of ischemia at different types of occlusion vessels disease, improves grafting in plastic surgery, diminishes inflammation and prevents rejection of transplants, activates detoxication functions of liver, inhibits retro-virus infection development.

Distribution of electrostatic potential of DNA fragments was evaluated. A method for calculation of electrostatic potential distribution based on Coulomb's law is proposed for long DNA fragments (approximately 1000 nucleotide pairs). For short DNA sequences, this technique provides a good correlation with the results obtained using Poisson-Boltzmann equation thus justifying its application in comparative studies for long DNA fragments.
