Epigenetic factors, including microRNAs (miRNAs), play an important role in affecting gene expression and, therefore, are involved in various biological processes including immunity protection against tumors. Marek's disease (MD) is a highly contagious disease of chickens caused by the MD virus (MDV). MD has been primarily controlled by vaccinations.

Article Synopsis
  • Ledeb. is a perennial herb from the Compositae family, grown in China for its medicinal, ornamental, and edible uses, and was affected by a leaf spot disease in 2021, with over 37% of plants showing symptoms.
  • Infected leaves exhibited irregular reddish-brown spots that progressed to withering and merging into larger lesions, though roots and stems were unaffected during the reproductive stage.
  • Research involved isolating the pathogen from diseased leaves and identifying it through morphological characteristics and genetic analysis, eventually confirming the identity of isolate TYTW7 based on established methods.

USDA, Agricultural Research Service, Avian Disease and Oncology Laboratory, East Lansing, MI 48823, USA. Electronic address:

Unlike rodent cells, spontaneous immortalization of avian cells and human cells is a very rare event. According to patent publications and current literature, there are no more than 4 spontaneously immortalized chicken embryo fibroblast (CEF) cell lines established up to date. One of those cell lines is ADOL (Avian Disease and Oncology Laboratory) ZS-1 cell line, which was established by continuous passaging of the CEFs derived from the specific pathogen free (SPF) 0.

A comprehensive analysis of avian lymphoid leukosis-like lymphoma transcriptomes including identification of LncRNAs and the expression profiles.

PLoS One

August 2022

USDA, Agricultural Research Service, Avian Disease and Oncology Laboratory, East Lansing, Michigan, United States of America.

Avian lymphoid leukosis-like (LL-like) lymphoma has been observed in some experimental and commercial lines of chickens that are free of exogenous avian leukosis virus. Reported cases of avian lymphoid leukosis-like lymphoma incidences in the susceptible chickens are relatively low, but the apathogenic subgroup E avian leukosis virus (ALV-E) and the Marek's disease vaccine, SB-1, significantly escalate the disease incidence in the susceptible chickens. However, the underlying mechanism of tumorigenesis is poorly understood.

Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, 12661, Institute of Special Wild Economic Animal and Plant Science, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Juye Street No. 4899, Changchun, Jilin, China, 130112.

Article Synopsis
  • American ginseng, a medicinal plant mainly grown in China, suffers from anthracnose, a serious disease that causes over 20% production loss annually.
  • In July 2019, anthracnose was found on 3-year-old ginseng plants in Jilin Province, with symptoms including brown, sunken lesions on leaves that led to wilting and substantial infection rates (over 36%) in a large field.
  • Researchers collected infected leaves, cultured them in a lab, and identified a specific isolate (XTJ2) that displayed unique colony characteristics and spore morphology, initially classifying it as a new species of pathogen.

In order to establish an infectious clone for CDV-3, a commercial vaccine strain of canine distemper virus for mink, to provide reference for the studies of pathogenesis and novel vaccine development of CDV. Thirteen pairs of primers were used to amplify the full-length genome of CDV-3 strain. Five long fragments were obtained based on single restriction site analysis of the whole genome of CDV-3 by RT-PCR.

Multi-Locus Phylogeny and Taxonomy of the Fungal Complex Associated With Rusty Root Rot of in China.

Front Microbiol

December 2020

Engineering Research Center, Chinese Ministry of Education for Edible and Medicinal Fungi, Jilin Agricultural University, Changchun, China.

Panax rusty root rot caused by the species complex is a devastating disease, and it is one of the main factors contributing to the difficulty in continual cropping. Rusty root rot occurs in all ginseng fields, but little is known about the taxonomy of the fungal pathogen complex, especially and -like species. Rusty root rot samples were collected from commercial ginseng cultivation areas of China, and the pathogens were isolated and purified as single spores.

MicroRNA profiling in the bursae of Marek's disease virus-infected resistant and susceptible chicken lines.

Genomics

May 2020

Avian Disease and Oncology Laboratory, Agriculture Research Service, United States Department of Agriculture, East Lansing, MI, USA.

Marek's disease (MD) is a lymphoproliferative disease of domestic chickens caused by a cell-associated oncogenic alpha-herpesvirus, Marek's disease virus (MDV). Clinical signs of MD include bursal/thymic atrophy, neurologic disorders, and T cell lymphomas. MiRNAs play key roles in regulation of gene expression by targeting translational suppression or mRNA degradation.

The utility of traditional methods for detecting seed-borne fungi is limited by the fact some fungi are unculturable or difficult to isolate. The seed-borne pathogens affecting cultivation have not been fully characterized. Seed-borne fungi can be identified based on the high-throughput sequencing of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) amplicons.

In 2010, sporadic cases of avian leukosis virus (ALV)-like bursal lymphoma, also known as spontaneous lymphoid leukosis (LL)-like tumors, were identified in two commercial broiler breeder flocks in the absence of exogenous ALV infection. Two individual ALV subgroup E (ALV-E) field strains, designated AF227 and AF229, were isolated from two different breeder farms. The role of these ALV-E field isolates in development of and the potential joint impact in conjunction with a Marek's disease virus (MDV) vaccine (SB-1) were further characterized in chickens of an experimental line and commercial broiler breeders.

Feature selection in the framework of meta-analyses (meta feature selection), combines meta-analysis with a feature selection process and thus allows meta-analysis feature selection across multiple datasets. In the present study, a meta feature selection procedure that fitted a multiple Cox regression model to estimate the effect size of a gene in individual studies and to identify the overall effect of the gene using a meta-analysis model was proposed. The method was used to identify prognostic gene signatures for lung adenocarcinoma and lung squamous cell carcinoma.
