Article Synopsis
  • A study called CONCORD-3 found that people around the world have very different chances of surviving for five years after being diagnosed with skin cancer, especially certain types of it.
  • The researchers wanted to see if the different forms of skin cancer, like nodular and acral melanoma, might explain why these survival rates are so different in various countries.
  • They discovered that the survival rates for certain types of melanoma are really high in places like Oceania and North America, but much lower in places like Taiwan, especially for nodular melanoma, which is the hardest type to survive.

Objectives: Research demonstrated a close relationship between loneliness and depressive symptoms, but it remains unclear whether these constructs reciprocally influence each other or whether the association is due to common causes. This study aimed at examining how loneliness and depressive symptoms jointly unfold across time and how the relationship varies both within and between individuals.

Methods: We used survey data of  = 8472 older adults gathered in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, which included eight waves over a time period of up to 15 years.

Claiming services requires a high level of information and communication. Dealing with a multitude of actors, such as pension insurance agencies, job centers, employers, physicians, and psychotherapists, and coordinating between and with these actors can delay or prevent the utilization of necessary measures like medical or vocational rehabilitation.

Early detection of oral cancer: a key role for dentists?

J Cancer Res Clin Oncol

June 2022

Institute of Social Medicine and Epidemiology, University of Lübeck, Ratzeburger Allee 160, 23562, Lübeck, Germany.

Purpose: The majority of suspected malignant changes in the oral mucosa are detected by dentists in private practice. Statements regarding the effectiveness of visual examination of the oral cavity for early detection are not necessarily transferable between different health care systems. Our clinical-epidemiological and methodological aim was thus to conduct a prospective regional study in dental practices under everyday conditions, assess the frequency and type of oral mucosal changes, and evaluate the dental examination methodology.

Background: Monitoring trajectories of intrinsic capacity (IC) in older adults has been suggested by the World Health Organization as a means to inform prevention to avoid or delay negative health outcomes. Due to a lack of longitudinal studies, it is currently unclear how IC changes over time and whether repeatedly measured IC predicts negative health outcomes.

Methods: Based on 4 751 repeated observations of IC (range = 0-100) during 21 years of follow-up among 754 older adults 70 and older, we assessed longitudinal trajectories of IC, and whether time-varying IC predicted the risk of chronic activities of daily living disability, long-term nursing home stay, and mortality using joint models.

Background: Medical education has a reputation for being demanding and stressful. However, longitudinal surveys across the whole course of study considering risks and resources are rare.

Methods: For the evaluation of stress and coping we administered the standard instruments Perceived Medical School Stress Scale (PMSS), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Work-Related Behavior and Experience Patterns (AVEM), Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), and a short form of the Coping Orientations to Problems Experienced Scale (Brief COPE) in three consecutive cohorts of medical students (N = 377) at one German university.

In children with cancer, the heterogeneity in ototoxicity occurrence after similar treatment suggests a role for genetic susceptibility. Using a genome-wide association study (GWAS) approach, we identified a genetic variant in TCERG1L (rs893507) to be associated with hearing loss in 390 non-cranial irradiated, cisplatin-treated children with cancer. These results were replicated in two independent, similarly treated cohorts (n = 192 and 188, respectively) (combined cohort: P = 5.
