Quantum walks on photonic platforms represent a physics-rich framework for quantum measurements, simulations and universal computing. Dynamic reconfigurability of photonic circuitry is key to controlling the walk and retrieving its full operation potential. Universal quantum processing schemes based on time-bin encoding in gated fibre loops have been proposed but not demonstrated yet, mainly due to gate inefficiencies.

Microelectromechanical system-based microphones demand high ingress protection levels with regard to their use in harsh environment. Here, we develop environmental protective components comprising polyimide nanofibers combined onto polyether ether ketone fabric meshes and subsequently appraise their impact on the electroacoustic properties of high signal-to-noise-ratio microelectromechanical system-based microphones via industry-standard characterizations and theoretical simulations. Being placed directly on top of the microphone sound port, the nanofiber mesh die-cut parts with an inner diameter of 1.

Replicating Spectral Baseline for Unambiguous Frequency Locking in Resonant Sensors.

Sensors (Basel)

April 2024

Laboratory for Emerging Nanometrology (LENA), Institute of Semiconductor Technology (IHT), Technische Universität Braunschweig, 38106 Braunschweig, Germany.

Electrothermal piezoresistive resonant cantilever sensors have been fabricated with embedded actuating (heating resistor) and sensing (piezo resistors) parts, with the latter configured in a Wheatstone bridge circuit. Due to the close spacing between these two elements, a direct thermal parasitic effect on the resonant sensor during the actuating-sensing process leads to asymmetric amplitude and reversing phase spectral responses. Such a condition affects the precise determination of the cantilever's resonant frequency, .

Materials Science and Engineering Research Group, Faculty of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Jl. Ganesha 10, Bandung, 40132, Indonesia.

The silicon (Si) offers enormous theoretical capacity as a lithium-ion battery (LIB) anode. However, the low charge mobility in Si particles hinders its application for high current loading. In this study, ball-milled phosphorus-doped Si nanoparticles encapsulated with nitrogen-doped carbon (P-Si@N-C) are employed as an anode for LIBs.

In this work, we present the area-selective growth of zinc oxide nanowire (NW) arrays on patterned surfaces of a silicon (Si) substrate for a piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG). ZnO NW arrays were selectively grown on patterned surfaces of a Si substrate using a devised microelectromechanical system (MEMS)-compatible chemical bath deposition (CBD) method. This study explores important parameters for achieving a high-level positional control of DNA-nanoparticle hybrid structures by drop-casting onto a pre-structured silicon surface, in which the active adsorption sites were defined using electron beam lithography. By confining the adsorption sites to the scale of the DNA origami, we create multi-dimensional patterns and study the effect of diffusion and hybrid nanostructure concentration in the liquid on site occupation. We also propose a physical diffusion model that highlights the importance of surface diffusion in facilitating the adsorption of hybrid nanostructure onto active sites, particularly for two and one-dimensional adsorption sites.

Sensors (Basel)

February 2023

Institute of Semiconductor Technology (IHT), Technische Universität Braunschweig, Hans-Sommer-Straße 66, 38106 Braunschweig, Germany.

We addressed the coating 5 mm-long cantilever microprobes with a viscoelastic material, which was intended to considerably extend the range of the traverse speed during the measurements of the 3D surface topography by damping contact-induced oscillations. The damping material was composed of epoxy glue, isopropyl alcohol, and glycerol, and its deposition onto the cantilever is described, as well as the tests of the completed cantilevers under free-oscillating conditions and in contact during scanning on a rough surface. The amplitude and phase of the cantilever's fundamental out-of-plane oscillation mode was investigated vs.

December 2022

Material Science and Engineering Research Group, Faculty of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Jl. Ganesha 10, 40132, Bandung, Indonesia.

Despite its high theoretical capacity, silicon anode has limited intrinsic conductivity and experiences significant volume changes during charge-discharge. To overcome these issues, facile metal-assisted chemical etching and in-situ polymerization of aniline are employed to produce a dense 1D polyaniline/silicon nanowire forest without noticeable agglomeration as a free-standing anode for lithium-ion batteries. This hybrid electrode possesses high cycling performance, delivering a stable capacity capped at 2 mAh cm for 346 cycles of charge-discharge.

Using a Tip Characterizer to Investigate Microprobe Silicon Tip Geometry Variation in Roughness Measurements.

Sensors (Basel)

February 2022

Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), Bundesallee 100, 38116 Braunschweig, Germany.

Given their superior dynamics, microprobes represent promising probe candidates for high-speed roughness measurement applications. Their disadvantage, however, lies in the fact that the volume of the microprobe's silicon tip decreases dramatically during roughness measurement, and the unstable tip geometry leads to an increase in measurement uncertainty. To investigate the factors that influence tip geometry variation during roughness measurement, a rectangular-shaped tip characterizer was employed to characterize the tip geometry, and a method for reconstructing the tip geometry from the measured profile was introduced.

Three-dimensional InGaN/GaN nano- and microstructures with high aspect ratios and large active sidewall areas are still of great interest in the field of optoelectronics. However, when grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), their optical performance can be negatively affected by gradients in thickness and peak emission wavelength along their sidewalls, which is still a key obstacle for using such structures in commercial products. In this work, we present a detailed study on the different mechanisms causing this gradient, as well as means to alleviate it.

FeCrCrO: A High-Capacity Cathode Material Synthesized Using an Ion-Exchange Chromatographic Method for Li-Ion Batteries.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

November 2021

Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid, CSIC, Cantoblanco, E-28049 Madrid, Spain.

An advanced ion-exchange method using resin was employed to produce a novel cathode material, FeCrCrO (0 ≤ ≤ 2), where some of the Cr ions at the octahedral sites of CrO were substituted with Fe ions. The battery cell test and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of CrO, CrO, and FeCrO indicate a change in the capacity from 210 to 280 and 350 mA h g with a change in the Cr/Cr atomic ratio from 2 to 3 and 8 for CrO, CrO, and FeCrO, respectively. The discharge capacity of the compound with the crystallographic formula FeCr(CrO)(CrO) is, by far, the highest reported capacity for transition metal oxide electrodes in the voltage range of 2.

Gallium nitride (GaN) micro-light-emitting diode (LED) technology meets this demand. However, the current technology is not suitable for the fabrication of arrays of submicron light sources that can be controlled individually.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic stresses the need for widely available diagnostic tests for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in individuals. Due to the limited availability of vaccines, diagnostic assays which are cheap, easy-to-use at the point-of-need, reliable and fast, are currently the only way to control the pandemic situation. Here we present a diagnostic assay for the detection of pathogen-specific nucleic acids based on changes of the magnetic response of magnetic nanoparticles: The target-mediated hybridization of modified nanoparticles leads to an increase in the hydrodynamic radius.
