Karstic aquifers represent crucial water resources and are categorized as either stratigraphically or fault-controlled. This study investigates groundwater-rock interactions and mixing processes within one of the largest fault-controlled karstic aquifers in Central Italy, adjacent to the Pontina plain, which is a highly populated area where agricultural activities and climate change challenge the groundwater assessment of a complex aquifer. We conducted structural, hydrogeochemical, and multi-isotopic screening of ten selected springs with different degrees of mineralization (ranging from Ca-HCO to Na-Cl hydrofacies), incorporating new analyses and modeling of δS(SO), δO(SO), Sr/Sr, and δB.

Stabilizing the crystalline structure and surface chemistry of Ni-rich layered oxides is critical for enhancing their capacity output and cycle life at a high cutoff voltage. Herein, we adopted a simple one-step solid-state method by directly sintering the NiCo(OH) precursor with LiOH and TaO, to simultaneously achieve the bulk material synthesis of LiNiCoO and construction of a rock-salt Ta-doped interphase and an amorphous LiTaO outer layer, forming a chemically bonded surface biphase coating on LiNiCoO. Such a cathode architectural design has been demonstrated with superior advantages: (1) eliminating surface residual alkali, (2) strengthening the layered oxygen lattice, (3) suppressing bulk-phase transformation, and (4) facilitating Li-ion transport.

Reperfusion therapy inevitably leads to brain-blood barrier (BBB) disruption and promotes damage despite its benefits for acute ischaemic stroke (AIS). An effective brain cytoprotective treatment is still needed as an adjunct to reperfusion therapy. Here, we explore the potential benefits of therapeutic hypothermia (HT) in attenuating early BBB leakage and improving neurological outcomes.

Worldwide, silicified woods are found in many geological formations. Significantly, the organic materials of wood are no longer dominant; almost all wood fossils have been mineralized into inorganic silica materials. These unique geological processes must be understood to develop better understanding on organic material fossilization, particularly in the micron scale.

In diderm bacteria, the Lol pathway canonically mediates the periplasmic transport of lipoproteins from the inner membrane (IM) to the outer membrane (OM) and therefore plays an essential role in bacterial envelope homeostasis. After extrusion of modified lipoproteins from the IM via the LolCDE complex, the periplasmic chaperone LolA carries lipoproteins through the periplasm and transfers them to the OM lipoprotein insertase LolB, itself a lipoprotein with a LolA-like fold. Yet, LolB homologs appear restricted to γ-proteobacteria and are missing from spirochetes like the tick-borne Lyme disease pathogen , suggesting a different hand-off mechanism at the OM.

Aging leads to a reduced anabolic response to mechanical stimuli and a loss of bone mass and structural integrity. Chemotherapy agents such as doxorubicin exacerbate the degeneration of aging skeleton and further subject older cancer patients to a higher fracture risk. To alleviate this clinical problem, we proposed and tested a novel mechanobiology-based therapy.

The surrounding rock of tunnels in cold regions are susceptible to the freeze-thaw cycle resulting from the combination of low temperatures and moisture during tunnel service. The phenomenon will not only lead to the expansion of pores and fissures in the surrounding rock of the initial tunnel, but also destroy the integrity of the rock. This destruction will have a serious impact on tunnel structure and rail transit operation safety.

O3-type layered oxides are regarded as one of the most promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. However, the multistep phase transitions, severe electrode/electrolyte parasitic reactions, and moisture sensitivity are challenging for their practical application because of the highly active Na. Here, a Na-free layer is built on the surface of NaNiMnFeO (NMF111) via a leaching treatment and the subsequent surface reconstruction.

Cancer stem cells (CSC) are thought to be responsible for cancer phenotypes and cellular heterogeneity. Here we demonstrate that the human colon cancer cell line DLD1 contains two types of CSC-like cells that undergo distinct morphogenesis in the reconstituted basement membrane gel Matrigel. In our method with cancer cell spheroids, the parent cell line (DLD1-P) developed grape-like budding structures, whereas the other (DLD1-Wm) and its single-cell clones dynamically developed worm-like ones.

This study investigates the post-liquefaction monotonic undrained shearing behavior of cemented sand at the macro- and microscales, using the discrete element method. A series of cyclic undrained triaxial tests with different stress amplitudes and post-liquefaction monotonic undrained triaxial tests were simulated on cemented sand with diverse cement contents (CCs). For comparison, a series of monotonic undrained triaxial tests on cemented sand without liquefaction (virgin cemented sand) were also modeled.

Rare-earth oxides have attracted interest as a platform for studying frustrated magnetism arising from bond-dependent anisotropic interactions. Ordered rock salt compounds NaPrO crystallize in two polymorphs (α and β) comprising honeycomb and hyperhoneycomb lattices of octahedrally coordinated Pr (4). Although possible realization of antiferromagnetic Kitaev interactions is anticipated for these phases on the basis of models, the air sensitivity of the two polymorphs has hampered reliable crystal growth and physical property measurements.

The Qinling water conveyance tunnel has a large buried depth and high in-situ stress level, and rockburst disasters frequently occurred during excavation. In order to find out the mechanical mechanism of rockburst, the research work in this paper is as follows: (1) In-situ three-dimensional hydraulic fracturing method was used to measure the in-situ stress of the deep buried tunnel crossing the ridge. (2) Based on the measured in-situ stress results, the stress distribution characteristics of the tunnel crossing the ridge were obtained by the multiple linear regression method, and the rockburst tendency during construction was predicted.
