We assessed the diversity of triatomines, the rates of natural infection, and the discrete typing units (DTUs) of Trypanosoma cruzi isolated from them in two municipalities in the state of Sergipe, Brazil. Active searches for triatomines were conducted in the peridomicily and wild enviroments of 10 villages within the two municipalities. Triatomines were taxonomically identified and their feces were extracted using the abdominal compression method.

Article Synopsis
  • Amphipods are important small crustaceans found in seagrass meadows, yet their distribution patterns have not been well studied.
  • This research examined twelve seagrass meadows (Cymodocea nodosa) across different biogeographical areas in the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, focusing on how various environmental factors affect amphipod populations.
  • The study revealed that amphipod abundance and species richness are primarily influenced by habitat structure elements, such as seagrass leaf area and epiphyte biomass, indicating that more complex habitats support greater amphipod diversity.

This study evaluated the neuroprotective effects of the Africanized bee venom (BV) and its mechanisms of action after 6-hydroxydopamine-(6-OHDA)-induced lesion in a mice model. Prior to BV treatment, mice received intrastriatal microinjections of 6-OHDA (no induced dopaminergic neuronal death) or ascorbate saline (as a control). BV was administered subcutaneously at different dosages (0.

The sudden outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease in 2019, known as COVID-19 has impacted the entire globe and has forced governments of various countries to a partial or full lockdown in the fear of the rapid spread of this disease. The major lesson learned from this pandemic is that there is a need to implement a robust system by using non-pharmaceutical interventions for the prevention and control of new contagious viruses. This goal can be achieved using the platform of the Internet of Things (IoT) because of its seamless connectivity and ubiquitous sensing ability.

Bio-inspired computing has progressed so far to deal with real-time multi-objective optimization problems. The Transmission expansion planning of the modern electricity grid requires finding the best and optimal routes for electricity transmission from the generation point to the endpoint while satisfying all the power and load constraints. Further, the transmission expansion cost allocation becomes a critical and pragmatic issue in the deregulated electricity industry.

Oral Oncol

April 2022

School of Dentistry, Tiradentes University, Aracaju, Sergipe, Brazil; Institute of Research and Technology, Laboratory of Morphology and Experimental Pathology, Aracaju, Sergipe, Brazil. Electronic address:

Basaloid squamous-cell carcinoma (BSCC) is an uncommon variant of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) consisting of atypical squamous and basaloid cells. It is an aggressive lesion that most commonly affects the oropharynx, being rare in intraoral sites. In this paper, we report the case of a male patient, 42 years old, smoker and chronic drinker, presenting a vegetating and ulcerated leukoerythroplastic lesion, asymptomatic, with five months of evolution, located on the floor of the mouth.

Medical ionizing radiation procedures and especially medical imaging are a non negligible source of exposure to patients. Whereas the biological effects of high absorbed doses are relatively well known, the effects of low absorbed doses are still debated. This work presents the development of a computer platform called Image and Radiation Dose BioBank (IRDBB) to manage research data produced in the context of the MEDIRAD project, a European project focusing on research on low doses in the context of medical procedures.

Characteristics of follicular dynamics and reproductive hormone profiles during oestrous cycles of jennies over an entire year.

Reprod Domest Anim

March 2021

National Engineering Laboratory for Animal Breeding, Key Laboratory of Animal Genetics and Breeding of the Ministry of Agriculture, College of Animal Science and Technology, China Agricultural University, Beijing, China.

Although donkeys have been domesticated for over 6,000 years, limited information is available concerning their reproductive physiology, especially under intensive rearing conditions. The aims of this experiment were to study follicular dynamics and reproductive hormone variation in jennies during the inter-ovulatory interval in different seasons. A total of 12 continuous cycles of six Dezhou Black (DB) donkey jennies were examined in four different seasons.

Driving factors of biogeographical variation in seagrass herbivory.

Sci Total Environ

March 2021

Grupo en Biodiversidad y Conservación, IU-Ecoaqua, Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • Herbivory plays a significant role in shaping seagrass communities, but knowledge on its biogeographical patterns and drivers is limited compared to those in terrestrial ecosystems.
  • A study was conducted in Cymodocea nodosa meadows, spanning 2000 km and 13° latitude across two ocean basins, to explore factors affecting herbivory, including herbivore density, seagrass characteristics, and environmental conditions.
  • Findings revealed that herbivory intensity is primarily influenced by fish density and seagrass size, with seasonal temperature variations being a key driver in temperate regions, while specific conditions in subtropical areas resulted in minimal herbivory.
