A simple and cost-effective architecture of a distributed acoustic sensor (DAS) or a phase-OTDR for engineering geology is proposed. The architecture is based on the dual-pulse acquisition principle, where the dual probing pulse is formed via an unbalanced Michelson interferometer (MI). The necessary phase shifts between the sub-pulses of the dual-pulse are introduced using a 3 × 3 coupler built into the MI.

Using acoustic wave modes propagation in piezoelectric plates loaded with conductive liquids, peculiarities of the mode-liquid acoustoelectric interaction are studied. It is found that (i) in contrast to bulk and surface acoustic waves propagating in piezoelectric semiconductors, the acoustoelectric attenuation of the modes is not symmetric in respect to its maximum, (ii) a large increase in attenuation may be accompanied by a small decrease in phase velocity and vice versa, (iii) the peculiarities are valid for "pure" (without beam steering) and "not pure" (with beam steering) modes, as well as for modes of different orders and polarizations, and (iv) conductivity of test liquid increases electromagnetic leakage between input and output transducers, affecting results of the measurements. To decrease the leakage, the liquid should be localized between transducers, outside the zone over them.

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been widely used in image recognition and processing tasks. Memristor-based CNNs accumulate the advantages of emerging memristive devices, such as nanometer critical dimensions, low power consumption, and functional similarity to biological synapses. Most studies on memristor-based CNNs use either software models of memristors for simulation analysis or full hardware CNN realization.

We study chaotic dynamics in a system of four differential equations describing the interaction of five identical phase oscillators coupled via biharmonic function. We show that this system exhibits strange spiral attractors (Shilnikov attractors) with two zero (indistinguishable from zero in numerics) Lyapunov exponents in a wide region of the parameter space. We explain this phenomenon by means of bifurcation analysis of a three-dimensional Poincaré map for the system under consideration.

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) experience catastrophic forgetting (CF) during sequential learning. In contrast, the brain can learn continuously without any signs of catastrophic forgetting. Spiking neural networks (SNNs) are the next generation of ANNs with many features borrowed from biological neural networks.

A compact hardware-software complex for measuring the electrical and mechanical parameters of a liquid based on a piezoelectric resonator with a lateral exciting electric field has been developed. It is shown that the modulus of the electrical impedance of the resonator near the resonant frequency decreases monotonically with an increase in conductivity of the contacting liquid. The obtained dependences can be used as calibration curves for measuring conductivity in the range of 100-10,000 μS/cm.

Recently, designers of electronic equipment have paid special attention to the issue of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of devices with their own components and assemblies. This is due to the high sensitivity of semiconductor microcircuits to electromagnetic interference. This interference can be caused either by natural phenomena, such as lightning strikes, or by technical processes, such as transients in circuits during fast periodic or random switching.

Based on numerical simulations of a boundary problem, we study various scenarios of microwave soliton formation in the process of cyclotron resonance interaction of a short electromagnetic pulse with a counter-propagating initially rectilinear electron beam taking into account the relativistic dependence of the cyclotron frequency on the electrons' energy. When a certain threshold in the pulse energy is exceeded, the incident pulse can propagate without damping in the absorbing beam, similar to the effect of self-induced transparency in optics. However, mutual motion of the wave and electrons can lead to some novel effects.

The dispersion, excitation, and amplification of electromagnetic transverse electric (TE) modes at terahertz (THz) frequencies in graphene in the hydrodynamic (HD) regime, with a direct electric current flowing perpendicular to the TE mode wavevector, were theoretically investigated. The expression for the nonlocal HD conductivity of graphene with a direct electric current flowing perpendicular to the TE mode wavevector was derived. The direct electric current in graphene leads to the capacitive nature of the graphene HD conductivity at THz frequencies, which makes TE modes exist in this frequency range.

The concept of dynamical causal effect (DCE) is generalized and equipped with a formalism which allows one to formulate in a unified manner and interrelate a variety of causality quantifiers used in time series analysis. An elementary DCE from a subsystem Y to a subsystem X is defined within the stochastic dynamical systems framework as a response of a future X state to an appropriate variation of an initial (X,Y)-state distribution or a certain parameter of Y or of the coupling element Y→X; this response is quantified in a probabilistic sense via a certain distinction functional; elementary DCEs are assembled over a set of initial variations via an assemblage functional. To include all those aspects, a "triple brackets formula" for the general DCE is suggested and serves as a first principle to produce specific causality quantifiers as realizations of the general DCE.

Using plates of weak piezoeletcric crystal (quartz) loaded with various liquids, it is shown that along with common modes, whose sensitivity towards different liquid parameters comparable with each other, there are some uncommon modes, whose amplitude responses towards viscosity η are much larger than towards temperature T and electric conductivity σ. The search of the modes with the selective properties is accomplished by varying plate thickness h, crystal orientation, wave length λ, and mode order n. It is found that all modes possessing the property are characterized by small surface-normal displacement, avoiding wave radiation into adjacent liquid, large in-plane displacements, enhancing viscous coupling the modes and liquids, and small electro-mechanical constant, reducing electro-acoustic interaction.

Recently, Ti-Ni based intermetallic alloys with shape memory effect (SME) have attracted much attention as promising functional materials for the development of record small nanomechanical tools, such as nanotweezers, for 3D manipulation of the real nano-objects. The problem of the fundamental restrictions on the minimal size of the nanomechanical device with SME for manipulation is connected with size effects which are observed in small samples of Ti-Ni based intermetallic alloys with thermoplastic structural phase transition from austenitic high symmetrical phase to low symmetrical martensitic phase. In the present work, by combining density functional theory and molecular dynamics modelling, austenite has been shown to be more stable than martensite in nanometer-sized TiNi wafers.

Currently, there is growing interest in wearable and biocompatible smart computing and information processing systems that are safe for the human body. Memristive devices are promising for solving such problems due to a number of their attractive properties, such as low power consumption, scalability, and the multilevel nature of resistive switching (plasticity). The multilevel plasticity allows memristors to emulate synapses in hardware neuromorphic computing systems (NCSs).
