Tissue-Specific Accumulation of Orally Administered Short- and Medium-Chain Chlorinated Paraffins in Honeybees ( L.).

Environ Sci Technol

August 2024

State Key Laboratory of Resource Insects, Institute of Apicultural Research, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Beijing 100093, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers investigated the effects of short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs and MCCPs) on young honeybee workers, exposing them to a concentration of 10 mg/L for 7 days.
  • The study found that these chemicals can accumulate in the honeybee's body, with higher concentrations in the midgut compared to the hindgut and head.
  • Results indicated that honeybees are more prone to bioaccumulate MCCPs, particularly those with lower molecular weight, while showing less tendency to selectively accumulate SCCPs.

Food Chem

December 2024

Institute of Quality Standards and Testing Technology for Agro-Products, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences; Key Laboratory of Agri-food Quality and Safety, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Beijing 100081, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • - The study compared the fatty acid composition of goat milk and human milk during lactation, finding that human milk has more polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), while goat milk contains more odd-chain, branched-chain, and monounsaturated fatty acids that decrease over lactation.
  • - Human milk's PUFAs can oxidize into aldehydes like hexanal, contributing to a mild aroma, whereas goat colostrum's butyric acid influences PUFA synthesis and oxidation, resulting in a buttery flavor through furanone production.
  • - The flavor and metabolite profiles of goat milk, especially in transitional milk, are affected by butyric acid, and the mature goat milk's medium chain fatty acids are influenced

The objective was to evaluate the effects of replacing inorganic trace minerals (ITM) with reduced levels of organic trace minerals (OTM) in proteinate forms and selenium yeast (Se-yeast) in the mineral premix of prepartal and lactating dairy goats on lactation performance, milk fatty acid (FA) composition, nutrient digestibility, and antioxidant status. Xinong Saanen dairy goats (n = 40) were blocked by parity and body weight, and randomly assigned to either ITM or OTM treatments from 4 wk prepartum to 8 mo of lactation. Both groups received the same basal diet except for the trace mineral supplement.

August 2024

Beijing Key Lab for Source Control Technology of Water Pollution, College of Environmental Sciences & Engineering, Beijing Forestry University, Beijing 100083, China. Electronic address:

Sewage sludge adsorbs a large amount of harmful organic pollutants, particularly the persistent and hydrophobic polyhalogenated compounds (PHCs). PHCs have been subjected to biological and chemical oxidation treatments during wastewater treatment processes; however, the species and concentrations of their transformation products (TPs) in sludge remain unknown, and the transformation pathways are unclear. In this study, 234 TPs of PHCs, including 77 TPs of chlorinated paraffins (CPs-TPs), 102 TPs of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs-TPs), 45 TPs of dechlorane plus (DPs-TPs), and 10 TPs of brominated flame retardants (BFRs-TPs), were identified in sludge through PhPCl-enhanced ionization coupled with ultra-performance liquid chromatography-Orbitrap-mass spectrometry.

Short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs and MCCPs) are hazardous industrial chemicals that tend to bioaccumulate in animal-derived foodstuffs through the food supply chain. However, the lack of reliable noninvasive bioindicators hinders the monitoring of farm animal exposure to CPs. In this study, 169 cattle hair samples were collected from beef cattle farms in six Chinese provinces, with further beef, feed, and soil samples being collected in Hebei province.

With the discovery of evidence that many endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the environment influence human health, their toxic effects and mechanisms have become a hot topic of research. However, investigations into their endocrine-disrupting toxicity under combined binary exposure, especially the molecular mechanism of combined effects, have rarely been documented. In this study, two typical EDCs, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and 4-hydroxybenzophenone (4-HBP), were selected to examine their combined effects and molecular mechanism on MCF-7 cell proliferation at environmentally relevant exposure concentrations.

Pigmented and non-pigmented rice varieties (grown in different areas) were collected in China, Yunnan, to investigate the content of macro-, trace elements and potentially toxic elements (PTEs), and to assess the health risk associated with dietary intake. The order of elemental concentrations in rice was Mn > Zn > Fe > Cu > Se for trace elements, P > K > Mg > Ca > Na for macro elements, and Cr > As > Cd for PTEs. Rice with a high concentration of essential elements also associated with a high content of PTEs.
