The risk of hypertension among child brides and adolescent mothers at age 20 s, 30 s, and 40 s: Evidence from India.

Hypertension in reproductive age women, particularly in low-and-middle income countries (LMICs) is an area that is less explored. This study assesses the risk of hypertension in relation to two critical women's health issues in the LMICs - child marriage and adolescent childbearing. The health consequences of these issues have been primarily studied in the context of reproductive health.

Cardiovascular Health Among Cancer Survivors. From the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey.

With increasing prevalence, there is a growing population living with cardiovascular (CV) disease and cancer who are concurrently or at risk for developing these 2 disease states. We examined CV conditions and CV risk factors in cancer survivors in a cross-sectional analysis, using data from the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Cancer survivors are more likely than participants without a cancer history to have multiple risk factors that increase their risk for CV disease and other chronic illnesses, including cigarette smoking, physical inactivity, and obesity.

Racial and Ethnic Inequities in Financial Hardship Among CVD Patients in the USA During the Pre- and Post-Affordable Care Act Era.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has substantially expanded access to health insurance coverage, resulting in a reduction in financial hardship, defined as ability to pay medical bills, among cardiovascular disease (CVD) patients in the post-ACA era. However, it is not known whether implementation of the ACA improved the racial and ethnic inequity in financial hardship among CVD patients. As such, using data from the 2011 to 2018 waves of the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), this paper aims to assess the odds of facing financial hardship among non-Hispanic-White, -Black, -Asian, and Hispanic CVD patients, before and after the implementation of the ACA.

Jail-Based Competency Restoration: What's Out There and What's Missing.

Forensic systems have seen an increase in the number of defendants in need of competency restoration services. Traditionally, competency restoration services have occurred at state psychiatric hospitals. Unfortunately, the waitlists for hospital competency restoration are extensive and result in many defendants waiting in jail for more than 4 months for an inpatient bed.

Child marriage and risky health behaviors: an analysis of tobacco use among early adult and early middle-aged women in India.

Background: Though the harmful impacts of child marriage have been evaluated across several domains, evidence on the relationship between child marriage and health behaviors over the life course is limited. In this paper, we examined whether getting married as a child is associated with one of the most common risky health behaviors, tobacco use, in adulthood.

Methods: Using nationally representative data from India, we compared the odds in favor of tobacco use among early adult (age 22-34) and early middle-aged (age 35-44) women who were married before age 18 with that of those who were married as youths (age 18-21).

Gathering Health Perspectives of the Justice Involved: A Multisite Needs Assessment Survey.

The well-being of justice-involved individuals must be of high priority to achieve health equity, reduce health disparities, and improve community health. To better understand the health interests and needs of justice-involved individuals, a survey was administered inquiring about health information-seeking behavior and health topics of interest. The survey was administered using secure tablet computers and completed by 1,888 incarcerated participants in 35 jails in 17 states.

Housing insecurity among cancer survivors: Results from the 2017 behavioral risk factor surveillance system survey.

Background: Cancer patients and cancer survivors may struggle to pay for housing or fall behind on their monthly bills to pay for out-of-pocket medical costs. Housing insecurity increases the likelihood of poorer health and decreased access to health care. The financial burden of medical care as a cause of poorer health outcomes is worsened by the inability to afford housing.

Child protective services during COVID-19 and doubly marginalized children: International perspectives.

Background: Alongside deficits in children's wellbeing, the COVID-19 pandemic has created an elevated risk for child maltreatment and challenges for child protective services worldwide. Therefore, some children might be doubly marginalized, as prior inequalities become exacerbated and new risk factors arise.

Objective: To provide initial insight into international researchers' identification of children who might have been overlooked or excluded from services during the pandemic.

Conditional release and cannabis use: Concerns and challenges for community reintegration.

This article, which serves as a perspective review, delves into the complexities of cannabis use among individuals preparing for or already on conditional release (CR). These complexities include an association between cannabis use and mental illness and dealing with the fact that the use of illicit substances, such as cannabis, is against CR rules, leading to potential revocation. A focus of this article is the deleterious effects cannabis and synthetic derivatives of cannabis can have for individuals on CR.

Cardiovascular conditions and obesity among gynecologic cancer survivors: Results from the 2020 behavioral risk factor surveillance system survey.

Background: With the increasing prevalence of gynecologic cancer and obesity, there is a growing population living with cardiovascular disease, obesity and gynecologic cancer concurrently or at risk of developing these disease states.

mHealth Intervention for Motor Skills: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Maternal history of child maltreatment (MCM) is linked to maternal depressive symptoms and offspring behavioural problems. Further, maternal and child mental health are associated with chaotic home environments.

Background: Child marriage is associated with various adverse socio-economic and pregnancy outcomes. However, there remains a dearth of research on the long-term health implications of child marriage. As such, this study sought to expand upon the growing literature on child marriage, specifically examining the associations between child marriage and hypertension during young adult age.

Health literacy among cancer survivors: Results from the 2016 behavioral risk factor surveillance system survey.

Health literacy is a set of knowledge and skills that enables individuals to obtain, communicate, process and understand information, and services to make appropriate health decisions and to successfully navigate the health care system. Levels and Correlates of Objectively Measured Sedentary Behavior in Young Children: SUNRISE Study Results from 19 Countries.

Purpose: There is a paucity of global data on sedentary behavior during early childhood. The purpose of this study was to examine how device-measured sedentary behavior in young children differed across geographically, economically, and sociodemographically diverse populations, in an international sample.

Methods: This multinational, cross-sectional study included data from 1071 children 3-5 yr old from 19 countries, collected between 2018 and 2020 (pre-COVID).

An analytical model of population level chronic conditions and COVID-19 related hospitalization in the United States.

Background: The surge in the COVID-19 related hospitalization has been straining the US health system. COVID-19 patients with underlying chronic conditions have a disproportionately higher risk of hospitalization and intensive care unit (ICU) admission. We developed a retrospective analytical model of COVID-19 related hospitalizations and ICU admissions linked to each of the three major chronic conditions - hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases (CVD).

One year into COVID-19: What have we learned about child maltreatment reports and child protective service responses?

Background: A year has passed since COVID-19 began disrupting systems. Although children are not considered a risk population for the virus, there is accumulating knowledge regarding children's escalating risk for maltreatment during the pandemic.

Objective: The current study is part of a larger initiative using an international platform to examine child maltreatment (CM) reports and child protective service (CPS) responses in various countries.

Fundamental Motor Skill Delays in Preschool Children With Disabilities: 2012 National Youth Fitness Survey.

Delays in fundamental motor skill (FMS) competency have been observed in a variety of children with disabilities. However, evidence of FMS delays is largely limited to small, geographically specific, limitedly diverse, and non-representative samples. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between FMS competency and reported disability status among pre-school children, ages 3-5 years, using the 2012 National Youth Fitness Survey (NYFS).

Child marriage and exposure to secondhand smoke among women of childbearing age: evidence from a nationally representative study in India.

Women in low-and-middle income countries (LMICs) are disproportionately exposed to secondhand smoke (SHS), particularly in the home environment. Girls married before the age of 18 are more likely to remain at home and may be at higher risk of SHS exposure. This paper investigates whether women who were married as child brides had a higher risk of SHS exposure than their peers who were married as adults in India, where both burden of smoking and child marriage are critical public health concerns.

Cigarette smoking after surviving breast cancer: A pilot study.

Background: Quitting smoking improves cancer survival and improves symptoms of cancer and its treatment. Cancer diagnosis presents a powerful motivation for leading a healthier lifestyle and embracing behavioral changes, such as quitting smoking. Many smokers quit after a cancer diagnosis, but some survivors continue to smoke.

Cross-sectional examination of 24-hour movement behaviours among 3- and 4-year-old children in urban and rural settings in low-income, middle-income and high-income countries: the SUNRISE study protocol.

Introduction: 24-hour movement behaviours (physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep) during the early years are associated with health and developmental outcomes, prompting the WHO to develop Global guidelines for physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep for children under 5 years of age. Prevalence data on 24-hour movement behaviours is lacking, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). This paper describes the development of the protocol, designed to address this gap.

Predictors of unhealthy physical and mental days among informal cancer caregivers: results from the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey.

Background: Patients with cancer and cancer survivors commonly rely upon family members and friends to act as caregivers to help manage cancer treatment and the late effects of that treatment. Informal caregivers provide a variety of supportive functions for cancer patients, including emotional, informational, and functional support, and practical assistance with skilled care activities.

Objective: We examined predictors of unhealthy physical and mental days among informal cancer caregivers.
