Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Charité Universitätsmedizin, Berlin, Germany; Department of Psychiatry, Zucker Hillside Hospital, Northwell Health, Glen Oaks, NY, United States; Department of Psychiatry and Molecular Medicine, Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, Hempstead, NY, United States.

To further explore the role of different antipsychotic treatments for cardio-cerebrovascular mortality, we performed several subgroup, sensitivity and meta-regression analyses based on a large previous meta-analysis focusing on cohort studies assessing mortality relative risk (RR) for cardio-cerebrovascular disorders in people with schizophrenia, comparing antipsychotic treatment versus no antipsychotic. Quality assessment through the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) and publication bias was measured. We meta-analyzed 53 different studies (schizophrenia patients: n = 2,513,359; controls: n = 360,504,484) to highlight the differential effects of antipsychotic treatment regimens on cardio-cerebrovascular-related mortality in incident and prevalent samples of patients with schizophrenia.

Article Synopsis
  • Hypoxic ischemic brain injury (HIBI) affects brain areas crucial for the autonomic nervous system, and researchers aimed to find how heart rate variability (HRV) can predict neurological outcomes after cardiac arrest (CA).
  • The study included 199 patients who experienced CA, focusing on the correlation between HRV markers and the severity of brain injury, along with other prognostic indicators like EEG results and pupillary reflexes.
  • Findings revealed that patients with better neurological outcomes had significantly higher HRV values, particularly in very low and low frequencies, as well as in the LF/HF ratio, indicating that these HRV measurements may serve as useful predictors for recovery.

Aims: NTRK gene fusions have been described in a wide variety of central nervous system (CNS) and soft tissue tumours, including the provisional tumour type 'spindle cell neoplasm, NTRK-rearranged' (SCN-NTRK), added to the 2020 World Health Organisation Classification of Soft Tissue Tumours. Because of histopathological and molecular overlaps with other soft tissue entities, controversy remains concerning the lineage and terminology of SCN-NTRK.

Methods And Results: This study included 16 mesenchymal tumours displaying kinase gene fusions (NTRK fusions and one MET fusion) initially diagnosed as infantile fibrosarcomas (IFS), SCN-NTRK and adult-type fibrosarcomas from the soft tissue, viscera and CNS.

People with schizophrenia die 15-20 years prematurely. Understanding mortality risk and aggravating/attenuating factors is essential to reduce this gap. We conducted a systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis of prospective and retrospective, nationwide and targeted cohort studies assessing mortality risk in people with schizophrenia versus the general population or groups matched for physical comorbidities or groups with different psychiatric disorders, also assessing moderators.

All tissue-resident macrophages of the central nervous system (CNS)-including parenchymal microglia, as well as CNS-associated macrophages (CAMs) such as meningeal and perivascular macrophages-are part of the CNS endogenous innate immune system that acts as the first line of defence during infections or trauma. It has been suggested that microglia and all subsets of CAMs are derived from prenatal cellular sources in the yolk sac that were defined as early erythromyeloid progenitors. However, the precise ontogenetic relationships, the underlying transcriptional programs and the molecular signals that drive the development of distinct CAM subsets in situ are poorly understood.

  • - A new type of brain tumor called "neuroepithelial tumor (NET), PATZ1 fusion-positive" has been identified, characterized by specific genetic fusions and still unclear origins, potentially linked to glioneuronal or mesenchymal cells.
  • - Due to the limited number of cases, this tumor type is not included in the official 2021 classification of central nervous system tumors by the World Health Organization.
  • - This report presents a unique case with a novel LARGE1-AFF2 fusion, highlighting similarities in clinical and genetic traits to previously documented NET-PATZ1 cases, indicating that more research is needed to explore the diversity within this tumor group.

There is growing evidence for a main role of environment in the occurrence of mental disorders such as a psychosocial risk factor, for example, childhood trauma, discrimination linked to minority status, or migrant status. One hypothesis is that social adversity factors influence the risk of schizophrenia through a common pathway: social defeat which could be defined as the impotence of a subject in the face of a situation of social adversity, with a consequential experience of devaluation on the social scale. This review proposes to explain the animal model of social defeat which provides an overview of the neurobiological consequences of chronic stress.
